jacobroyquebec··on Proton Mail gets a desktop app for encrypted email and calendar
FYI, it's fairly easy to have Proton Drive on linux using rclone [0], for push/pull/sync.

jacobroyquebec··on Ideal Note-Taking Platform?
Great idea! After a quick search, there's some plugins[0][1] that could work for my use case!

jacobroyquebec··on Ideal Note-Taking Platform?
Good point, I tried to use it too as it seems to cover most of my points, but it's unsupported on macOS and iOS.
jacobroyquebec··on Ideal Note-Taking Platform?
Oh this looks great! Thank you!
jacobroyquebec··on Ideal Note-Taking Platform?
Great to know, I always read that people dislike Obsidian for being closed-source. It's also not self-hosted by default, but seems possible with a sync plugin. Thanks, I will look into it!
jacobroyquebec··on Ideal Note-Taking Platform?
Hey all!

I've been trying to find the perfect software to organize my notes, thoughts and tasks.

I wasn't able to find any suitable candidate and wondered if the HN crowd is in the same boat.

Is there any posts of people who went down the same endless search you would recommend?

For reference, here's a post [0] explaining my requirements.

jacobroyquebec··on iPhone SE: The One-Eyed King?
Because of a few things : 1) in a camera, you’ll have a big (>1inch) sensor. 2) in a camera, you’ll have a much bigger lens diameter, thus a bigger aperture diameter (not f number). Both effects will decrease the width of the focus point, wich will increase the bokeh effect.
jacobroyquebec··on Moving Away from Gmail
I second this, i've been using it for a few years and it's very easy to setup. Reliable and cheap.
jacobroyquebec··on Ask HN: How to Blend 'Minimalism/Low-Tech/Degrowth' with Software Development?
My thought process while adapting my life are more akin to this :

I felt disconnected and unhappy -> found those principles/values that seem to make people more happy (who were in the same situation as me) -> tried them, felt much more happy and fulfilled than before -> try to apply it to other areas.

jacobroyquebec··on Ask HN: How to Blend 'Minimalism/Low-Tech/Degrowth' with Software Development?
I see your point and I have not made it clear in my post;

I actually follow these values in all other parts of my life; I cut back on my possessions (lots of sales and gifts), take exclusively public transport, eat vegan and (mostly) local, always favour low-tech, package free buys and responsible companies, etc.

My job is the complete opposite, which I want to fix.

jacobroyquebec··on Ask HN: How to Blend 'Minimalism/Low-Tech/Degrowth' with Software Development?
Good idea, that way you can feel like you do a part of good (helping people) while pushing simple software.

Maybe if we can get enough traction, it could be the new trend ;)

jacobroyquebec··on Ask HN: How to Blend 'Minimalism/Low-Tech/Degrowth' with Software Development?
Exactly how I feel about web dev. Then, even when you can convince a client that all those layers are useless, a sleazy competitor salesman can convince him otherwise...

jacobroyquebec··on Bottle: A Bitcoin SV Browser
Except that the link you suggest is for BSV, a bastard fork of bitcoin that tries to lure newcomers.
jacobroyquebec··on Bottle: A Bitcoin SV Browser
Thanks, makes sense now!

>And because it's on the blockchain, ownership is provable, the content is permanent, and it can be directly monetized forever.

How can content be monetized foreved if it costs something to upload (send a transaction to create the block) but nothing to browser (navigating through the blockchain costs nothing)?

jacobroyquebec··on Personal data of 2.9M people leaked from Desjardins
Not in the article, but Desjardins has set up a webpage with information on the leak.[0]

They will send a letter to every clients whose informations were leaked, which will include the code for a free 12-month Equifax (credit report) monitoring.

jacobroyquebec··on What are the legal implications of contributing to open source from work laptop?
Would using somerhing like VNC (to a computer or server that you own) be considered a loophole ?
jacobroyquebec··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
What would you recommend instead?
jacobroyquebec··on Impossible color
In substractive color theory, yes, you’ll end up with a brown when mixing red and green in near equal parts.

Keep in mind that the red and green you’ll be mixing is not 100% color pigments, so it cannot merge into a dark grey.

jacobroyquebec··on Building a “real” Linux distro
Thanks! BTW, It seems to be a really tedious work, I like the result :)
jacobroyquebec··on Building a “real” Linux distro
Allright! The article nor the FAQ page didn't mention why it was hated so much haha.

Thank for the answer!

jacobroyquebec··on A New Look at the Little-Known Pyramids of Ancient Nubia
Fuji's has one of the best weather-sealing (dust & rain) in the mirrorless segment. No idea about the lens he used, but my X-Pro2 survived (rain & snow) storms, even with a non-tropicalized lens.

I guess sandstorms must be harder for the camera?

jacobroyquebec··on Show HN: I Created an Online Store with Jekyll and Stripe on GitHub Pages
Yes! Since GitHub Pages dosen't let me run actual code (can't use it as a full-stack server, only to show html pages), I use heroku to actualy process the payment (Stripe on GitHub Pages captures the infos and send it using POST to my heroku instance).

My heroku instance runs heroku-stripe-checkout (https://github.com/christophercliff/heroku-stripe-checkout) but it's a bit outdated and I made some changes (to support shipping and the new Stripe API), which I described here : https://github.com/christophercliff/heroku-stripe-checkout/i...

jacobroyquebec··on Show HN: I Created an Online Store with Jekyll and Stripe on GitHub Pages
Using Jekyll as the CMS for my items and GitHub Pages for the hosting I am able to display my photos for free.

Using Stripe on the front-end and an Heroku instance to process the payments, I can process orders without a cost.

If you'd like, I can show you bits of my code! :)
