jacobr··on A shot to prevent Lyme disease could be on its way
TBE is another terrible tick borne neurological disease that’s increasing rapidly, currently only in Eurasia. There’s no cure, but at least a decent vaccine. It requires booster shots every 5 years though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tick-borne_encephalitis
jacobr··on How Sweden became the Silicon Valley of Europe
BankID works ridiculously well. Would be interesting to know how the project is run, and how they managed to be so successful.
jacobr··on Google no longer requires AMP, but the replacement might be worse
The width and height attributes are used by the browser to determine the aspect ratio https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2020/03/setting-height-widt...
jacobr··on PM and EM Rules of Engagement
Are responsibilities really this neatly separated? I’ve worked in both huge, small and medium sized Scandinavian companies and apart from EM and PM, the following people would also have a say in answering these questions:

  * designers
  * QA
  * tech lead
  * senior developers
  * delivery lead
Is this because of my biased experience with consensus culture, or is the article a simplification?

Also, an Engineering Manager would typically decide which technical experts are suitable for a given task, but would not be the one deciding which tech to use, apart from budget constraints.

jacobr··on HTML and CSS techniques to reduce your JavaScript
You then respond with “is x% worth y% longer time to market for new features, and n milliseconds longer load time for users on other browsers?”

Also don’t forget to check actual conversion and other important metrics for different browsers, not only number of visits.

jacobr··on OpenStreetMap proven to be a highly accurate map in top US cities
Volvo cars will notify other Volvos about slippery roads and other road hazards, and there’s work to share this data with other car manufacturers as well. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/volvo-european-data-task-...

Is there something like an Open Routing project where this dynamic data would make more sense than in OSM?

jacobr··on Wild lynx could be reintroduced into Scottish Highlands
I found it interesting that 48 year old Anders Povlsen is using his fortune buying up estates, trading with the state to get large adjacent areas to rewild - to the point where he’s now the largest private land owner https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anders_Holch_Povlsen
jacobr··on Why not use GraphQL?
API routes is what they refer to with the Next.js BFF approach: https://nextjs.org/docs/api-routes/introduction

It’s useful if you need to call an API from the client in a Next.js application but modify the data first, or call multiple endpoints without introducing a waterfall to the client. What you described can be used in a similar way for filtering and processing etc, but only for the initial page load.

jacobr··on If Not SPAs, What?
Is ESI in Service Workers anything you’ve tried? A bit mind blown, never thought of that. Been putting of SW due to all horror stories of people bricking their sites basically
jacobr··on Say goodbye to resource-caching across sites and domains
Even more food for thought - what if the cache is slower than the network? https://simonhearne.com/2020/network-faster-than-cache/
jacobr··on Life Is Short (2016)
Some people seem to be able to shrug off bullshit at work, just go home and think about things that “matter”. If I see bullshit, things that are wrong, or just legitimately hard problems I have a very hard time not working hard to fix it even though I would not really care about the outcome in 10 years.

The dilemma is the balance between doing work that matters, maybe finding something where I care more about the outcome, or learn to brush things off and focus on other things in life that matters.

jacobr··on Madhya Pradesh man cycles 105km to ferry son to Class X exam centre
What do you think would happen if everyone stopped using tobacco and alcohol over night? Would poverty disappear?

It’s of course tragic when parents make a bad position even worse, but addiction is a symptom of poverty and not the cause.

jacobr··on Skypack – A new kind of JavaScript delivery network
> As more and more sites join, cache hits become more likely, making all sites load faster as a result.

This was not really true back when browsers allowed sharing caches between domains because of different versions and fragmentation of CDNs, and is definitely not true now when a.com and b.com would not share a cache for skypack to avoid fingerprinting.

jacobr··on France to introduce controversial age verification system for adult websites
> They also were exposed and survived just fine

Most people also survived driving without a seatbelt before it became illegal.

Just because something is not dangerous or damaging in 100% of cases does not mean it’s not problematic or should not be made slightly less convenient to access. That prevention is not 100% effective also does not mean it will have 0 positive effect.

I’m still against age filters like this though, because they tend to also block access to legitimate sex education and info about HBT issues that can be life saving for teenagers.

jacobr··on Dates and Times in JavaScript – A New API for Dates from TC39
You would do new Intl.DateTimeFormat(siteLocale) and not new Intl.DateTimeFormat(browserLocale) to get consistent formatting.
jacobr··on Dates and Times in JavaScript – A New API for Dates from TC39
You can already use https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Refe... for quite a few of moment’s use cases.
jacobr··on The Return of the 90s Web
If I only evaluated our tech stack on a pure “what’s the most efficient way to deliver HTML to the user” I’d not choose React, but I don’t know of any other framework that ticks the other boxes required in a large organization.

- Code sharing - how do you share reusable snippets of code that includes both the SSR logic and the JS that is also required on the frontend. React’s component model is fantastic where a team can develop a component independently

- Skill set - getting 50 React developers to write HTML and JS should be fine if other problems were solved, but often the suggested solution is obscure things like Elm or Elixir

- Even if most of what a company builds is static marketing content, other parts can be more app-like and having developers be able to share code and use the same basic technology is a great productivity booster

jacobr··on Deep JavaScript: Theory and Techniques
That’s horrific and amazing
jacobr··on Ask HN: Best Way to Mock APIs in 2020?
Haven’t tried it yet, but https://www.npmjs.com/package/msw looks very interesting. It uses Service Workers in the browser to intercept requests to the APIs, instead of running a real mock server.

There’s support for mocking in Node as well for SSR and jsdom tests.

jacobr··on Chakra UI – Modular and accessible UI components for React apps
I am sure there are plenty of cases where this approach works just fine.

I assure you that those of us who work on projects where this would not work are not simply bad at naming things and that’s the only reason we picked component based styles.

jacobr··on Strapi – Open-source Node.js Headless CMS
How are the training resources for editors using Strapi? One selling point of the more commonly used CMSs is that you can hire editors that already know it and there are companies that can help you train editors.
jacobr··on Shopify Goes Digital by Default
Until you’re senior enough that most of your job is communication, then remote becomes difficult again. WFH now and maintaining Work/Life balance is really difficult when most of your time is spent sending emails, reviewing code and proposals and answering questions in a global company. Writing code at night happened occasionally before, but it required leaving my family and pulling out my laptop so it had to be for good reason. Helping an overseas team out over Slack with something at 11 pm can be done from my phone, “it’ll just take 5 minutes”.
jacobr··on Why Segment Went Back to a Monolith
Define “codebase”? You can have multiple services, user facing apps or modules inside a single repository, but if there are no boundaries coordination will be difficult of course.
jacobr··on A Static Future: The magic of compile-time workflows
Instead of running build_entire_site when updating content, you can run invalidate_cache
jacobr··on A Static Future: The magic of compile-time workflows
> If you change the header component, and that header component is shown on every page in the site, you will have to give it some time.

To me this invalidates SSG for any busy site with a somewhat large menu. Any time you change the order of some options or rename an item, everything needs to be rebuilt.

If you combine it with something like Edge Side Includes it could work I guess, only rebuilding the part if the page that’s needed.

jacobr··on What is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve?
Many problems are not suitable to be addressed by individual’s consumption choices. For instance, I think governments and international trade organizations should make sure there is no slavery involved in producing goods - it should simply not be legal to sell something if it was produced by slave or child labor. I would ask you to judge me on the efforts I make to influence politicians in this direction, rather than on whether or not I have done extensive research on the sourcing of minerals of every smart phone brand. The latter simply does not scale.
jacobr··on Sweden gives employees unpaid time off to be entrepreneurs (2019)
I know first hand small employers that had employees go on parental leave, hired replacements, and then without too much hassle could keep the replacements and fire the one on leave, because there are many exceptions you can do as a small employer. So I find your entire rant confusing and not matching my experience.

I’ve been on parental leave myself and my small employer hired a replacement, and by the time I got back we were both needed because they ran a successful and expanding business.

jacobr··on Sweden gives employees unpaid time off to be entrepreneurs (2019)
Parental leave pay is 79% or something, not “full salary”
jacobr··on Ask HN: What were the things you did that made the biggest impact at your work?
Sort of did this at my previous job by being senior and in a good position and communicating that I’d be working from home first 1, then 2, then 3 days a week. Other team members with long commutes followed (it made sense to avoid in-person meetings the days I wasn’t there, so then other devs would also wfh..) and the company invested in better tech, software and processes for remote working. Talked with a former colleague who is now 4 days a week remote - when I started he spent 3h/day in the car.
jacobr··on Introducing Yarn 2
How is the repo size doing, if you check in your dependencies? I’m handling a monorepo with around 20 devs and we will be adding teams up to maybe 100 devs at year’s end, a bit worried that zero-install would explode the repo size.
