jacobedawson··on Pausing AI Developments Isn't Enough. We Need to Shut It All Down
Agreed this is not discussed often - in a doom scenario, a quick death for everyone might be the best case
jacobedawson··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
That's why I said it was unpredictable, in both directions.
jacobedawson··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
I think most people see where the puck is going, and even where it is right now is very impressive. It's not hard to see that it will be likely less than 5 years before it will be able to do what you did on day 2, and much more, at a tiny fraction of the cost, with no downtime, no attitude problems, sick days, etc. The things you mentioned (taking on board feedback, testing across devices, iterating on solutions) doesn't seem very far away at all.

The rate of increase in capabilities is also unpredictable, which is what is amazing & terrifying.

jacobedawson··on Twitter’s $42k-per-month API prices out nearly everyone
...Blackburn, however, says researchers will continue to find a way to scrutinize what’s happening on Twitter. “We’ve been mostly cut off from Facebook for years and we’ve continued to make progress,” he says. “It’s not like science is going to be held hostage by a guy that played himself into burning $44 billion on a website that makes no money, just so he could force all its users to read his shitposts.”
jacobedawson··on Is Twitter down / read-only for everyone else?
yeah also seeing this, many such cases
jacobedawson··on People tricking ChatGPT “like watching an Asimov novel come to life”
Should have been "jumping off a Cliffs notes"
jacobedawson··on Protonmail can delete the wrong email and nobody cares
I had an email account suspended by Protonmail for using single-digit aliases for testing, took me a week to get it back, and that was only after signing up for LinkedIn premium to be able to message a non-robot.

It was terrifying enough that it has made me rethink how I manage all of my online accounts. Incidentally, I never had that issue with Gmail in 10+ years.

Not a Protonmail fan.

jacobedawson··on Show HN: WalletWatch – a social network for Ethereum wallets
Guys, there's zero reason for a webapp to only be visible below a certain screen width - if you think the styling is going to break above a certain width, just set a max-width on your container and center it.

Another tip - allow the user to see the dapp before having to connect their wallet - the friction of having to connect, even just with metamask / 2 clicks in total, is enough friction for me to just close the site.

At the very least, show screenshots or something on the landing page.

Good luck!

jacobedawson··on Global Code Time Report
With all due respect, I'm struggling to imagine what you could possibly be coding that needs 5 hours of "hands on" time every single day - from my experience most of my productive time is spent thinking about what to code & reading code, the actual "hands on" time is fairly minimal.
jacobedawson··on John Carmack's new AGI company, Keen Technologies, has raised a $20M round
To be fair, all human desires have been manufactured by an external system: evolution.

We might imagine that we do what we please, in reality we're seeking pleasure/ reinforcement within a predetermined framework, yet most people won't complain when taking the first bite of a delicious, fattening dessert.

jacobedawson··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
"The telescope’s first public image shows a cluster of galaxies called SMACS 0723, which is so heavy it warps and magnifies the light from distant galaxies beyond it."
jacobedawson··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
I've been using Copilot for a few months now and in general it's really impressive. For me it's been a very useful autocomplete for repetitive tasks - writing tests, scaffolding components, utility functions, etc - Copilot feels like magic sometimes, it just knows what I need to do and provides the code template almost instantly.

Will be paying for the public version, absolutely worth the money in a single day's coding alone.

jacobedawson··on Web 3 is Flawed
So you would take a vial of essential oil over something you could sell right now for $2,000,000?
jacobedawson··on Solend seized $170M of user funds
Here's a new type of computer - it's exactly the same as your current computer, except it consumes 1/10th of the power...

A replacement doesn't have to be better in every single facet.

jacobedawson··on Why isn’t new technology making us more productive?
Another poster compared 1890 to 1950 - jumping from one to the other would be obviously shocking, from 1960 - 2020 perhaps less-so, physically.

Still, I find it amazing that in 2022, I:

- Work from home via the internet with people I've never met - Visit places I've never been in simulated 3D to build familiarity - Receive exact routes to virtually anywhere from a computer in my pocket - Video call with my family in real-time literally from one side of the planet to another. - Have Copilot autocompleting repetitive lines of code for me with (ok, 60% - 70% of the time..) incredible prescience - Get real-time translation of foreign text from a printed page

Those are just some of the the most common examples from my daily life. The productivity gains are real, at least for me personally.

jacobedawson··on Geniuses of the past were aristocratically tutored
You could probably argue that in the soft domains of music & literature, the explosion of widely available content might actually be a cause of the "decline" - it's not unlikely your undiscovered genius looks at everything out there, thinks "I guess it's all been done, and I probably won't be noticed in amongst all this noise anyway", and takes a well-paying job instead of creating the next great work of art.
jacobedawson··on How Much Does Education Improve Intelligence? A Meta-Analysis [pdf]
Seems like education doesn't have to scale terribly - perhaps we should move to a system where the highest quality teachers produce content that can be asynchronously shared globally (think Masterclass, language permitting), while the "in-house" teachers can work more as "guides".

There'll still be a varied quality of in-house teaching, but at least the primary lessons could be world-class regardless of the location.

jacobedawson··on Visa Buys CryptoPunk #7610
This comment applies if you think that art itself is a scam, or that art needs to have "use" outside of perceived financial, social & aesthetic value.

HN does tend to be especially bitter towards Crypto, something that I think will fade with time as it blends into culture without seeming like some "charlatan intruder from elsewhere".

I tend to think the rise of NFT markets represents an inflection point that will only be obvious when we connect the dots looking backwards. Plenty of people reviled Duchamp.

P.s. Please let me know where I can purchase an Alpha-Centauri real-estate NFT

jacobedawson··on useStateMachine: A ½ kb state machine hook for React
Not true, see Gaeron's direct reply in the thread you linked to, that's been the standard for 3 years and works like a charm - useEffect specifically is the hook for handling async functions ("impure effects").
jacobedawson··on Clubhouse Bio Generator

jacobedawson··on Show HN: Jam, an Open Source Clubhouse (w/ WebRTC)
Fantastic, so great to see how quickly you were able to get this up and also it's a blessing for those of not allowed in to the iProduct citadel. Also awesome to see Berlin & Vienna represented.

Re: growth - the crypto community has been jumping into Clubhouse but I think pushing this as the local + opensource alternative could help Jam see very quick adoption.

jacobedawson··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
Kwiz - Quizzes / Quiz creator for developers. Next.js + Node + MongoDB based, proper little code editor & syntax highlighting included: https://kwiz.dev
jacobedawson··on Ask HN: How do I get people to find my pre-launch landing page?
Have a look through this list of 100 startup directories - there will be a few places to add a link to your landing page. https://aeroleads.com/blog/startup-directories/

Definitely check out Indie Hackers and /r/SideProject as well.

Good luck!

jacobedawson··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2021?
I'm curious - why do you think that Bitcoin is "one of the worst ideas in modern history"? It's a very bold claim, I'd like to understand your reasoning.
jacobedawson··on Show HN: Slyde – A new social network, private by design
HN hug of death?
jacobedawson··on Your Computer Isn't Yours
There's probably a business opportunity in that ;)
jacobedawson··on Ethereum set to become first blockchain to settle $1T in one year
Wouldn't the correct answer always be "no more than necessary / technically feasible"?
jacobedawson··on Iron, How Did They Make It, Part IVa: Steel Yourself
I can recommend the book 'Men, Machines and Modern Times' by Elting E. Morison for (among other things) a fascinating look into the early development of the steel industry & manufacturing process / development of the Bessemer steel process, I never thought I'd find steel so engrossing :)
jacobedawson··on Freeman Dyson’s letters offer another glimpse of genius
Well said, the halo effect is real.
jacobedawson··on R U OK?
Even though it might be true that we have progressed a lot, our impact has increased exponentially, to the point where 20 million completely irresponsible humans don't have anywhere near the potentially catastrophic effect of 7 billion relatively enlightened humans (with nukes & fossil fuels).

I do feel we might 'just make it' if we can organize culturally as well as technologically, but it looks like it's going to be a nailbiter.
