I can't play using Safari 7.0.1 on OS X 10.9.1. (And by "can't play", I mean I see the "CodeCombat requires a modern browser to play" screen.)

She copied other people's work and made money. Shocker.
jacobbudin··on Please, keep paying $80 a month for cable so I can enjoy cheap TV
> This isn't the case where I live. A new release DVD costs approx. £10. I can get a cinema ticket for as little as £3.50.

I'm referring to renting the DVD. Or even buying the DVD, and watching it together as a family or group (£10 DVD vs. 4*£3.50 movie tickets). But yes, there are some caveats.

+1. You'll pay more to watch a movie in a theater than you will months later when it's available on DVD. You'll pay more to watch the same movie on DVD than you will months later when it's available on Netflix Watch Instantly.

This is how successful media business models work: milk the most money from those who most desire the product.

jacobbudin··on Square Cash
Out of curiosity: Do you know whether the $1 is listed as "available funds"? Some (all?) banks list pending transactions like check deposits and include those funds in your account total, but then have a separate header for "available funds" that are actually usable to spend or move.

jacobbudin··on Tired Of Inequality? One Economist Says It'll Only Get Worse
Unless this Bohemian class anticipates living with roommates through old age, living in Brooklyn is considerably more expensive than living in suburbia.[1] Perhaps the economist meant Detroit.

Good thing there are plenty of start-up opportunities in Telecom, Energy, and Agriculture. </sarcasm>

The way I see it: Education is seeing growth in charter schools, MOOCs, iTunes U, etc. Healthcare is changing under Obamacare[1]. Music is now brought to you by Rdio and Spotify.

Source? I have obtained drivers' licenses from NY and PA, neither of which required me to be fingerprinted.
jacobbudin··on Save 50% on All O'Reilly Ebooks and Videos
O'Reilly uses a department store pricing structure.

There's almost always a sale, and for eBooks, the sale price is usually not much cheaper than Amazon.com's (or other sellers) "everyday" price. Only suckers pay full-price for their eBooks.

jacobbudin··on All those people with cheap Android smartphones have finally started buying apps
This is an apples to orchards comparison and a very misleading title. The Google Play Store includes purchases of movies, TV shows, books, magazines, etc. You can compare it to the iTunes Store in its entirety, but certainly not to the "Apple App Store".
jacobbudin··on Why is cycling so popular in the Netherlands?
I lived in Breda, The Netherlands for a month several years ago. I agree completely with the article: its a matter of both culture and safety. There are dedicated bike path lanes--fully separated from the roadways. Moreover, both cyclists and drivers alike follow the law.

Compared to New York City, where I live now, it's the exact opposite. Bike lanes, in the few places they exist, are rarely anything more than a faded paint line on the road. Very few people (pedestrians, cyclists, or drivers) follow the rules of the road. Even as a twentysomething male--presumable predisposed to a higher degree of risk--riding a bike in NYC seems downright reckless.

A contributing factor to its dangerousness may be the city's density; you have trucks at all hours dropping off newspaper deliveries, Amazon.com packages, FreshDirect orders, and so on. These may be some of the worst offenders--not necessarily because of the drivers but also how the vehicles lack visibility.

Some recent examples: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/01/nyregion/6-year-old-fatall... http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/23/bicyclists-fami...

jacobbudin··on Show HN: 7min Workout with Rdio
I've been a long-time HN reader (i.e., lurker), but I've just become a commenter to say: Very cool. I'm sweating already. It also really commendable you've made it available open source. One small suggestion: Give a preview of the next work-out in the corner.
