jackric··on Why SpaceX Wants to Make Landing Super Heavy More Difficult
Viability of ~= 1g thrust? Perhaps keeping the same engine some downwards thrust can be redirect sidewards with some obstructing shape moved into the exhaust plume

> manned starship is many landings after the first unmanned landing

What number makes you comfortable? 100 flawless landings, 1000?

jackric··on The thinking behind the 32GB Windows Format limit on FAT32
>Instead the code sat untouched for decades as the limit slowly became more and more unreasonable.

My projects likely won't span decades but when I know I'm putting in some opinionated value I leave behind a comment like:

// XXX picking 32gb because it'll probably be 5 years until we have >32gb hard drives. Change this when the world changes!

jackric··on Why SpaceX Wants to Make Landing Super Heavy More Difficult
Is suicide burn a viable landing method for manned rockets? Would need a comfortable G force, perhaps 3g for 10 secs?

And then how many successful unmanned demonstrations until passengers feel comfortable trusting it? 1000?

jackric··on Why SpaceX Wants to Make Landing Super Heavy More Difficult
I think they're not landing on the launch platform. With catcher's mitt on a different platform, launch configuration won't have rocket legs, just a platform tower holding up the rocket.

Keep upping the wackiness until the other person is the one trying to talk you down, then nourish the arrow of scepticism and reason.

Back in my day, the Earth was static toroid at the centre of the solar system

Do the crash reports include recent solar activity?

Much appreciated!

I would suggest Option is the more semantic type to use for your situation - None indicating no valid solution on this path
jackric··on Ticketmaster will pay $10M for hacking rival ticket seller
Cool so I want to hack a company and face no jail: create my own company, employ myself and do the hack.

My company gets fined $X million, which it doesn't have so it folds. I skip off into the sunset

jackric··on Exhaustiveness Checking with Mypy
Looks like you haven't had much immersion in functional languages - the ones you list are all quite an imperative flavor. If you're interested in sampling some other styles of language I suggest the book "Seven languages in seven weeks"
jackric··on Exhaustiveness Checking with Mypy
Curious what other languages you're fluent with? I found once I'd grokked a language with `match` (Rust), I missed it when writing Python afterwards.
jackric··on Exhaustiveness Checking with Mypy
Very exciting for experienced developers missing this from other languages, but I predict the growing spec of Python is leading it away from the "my first language" crowd in future.
jackric··on Saudi Arabia applied for diplomatic immunity for ten security guards in Norway
Whoever invented this "scroll a single sentence for suspense" thing can fuck off
jackric··on Diem – A rebrand of Facebook’s Libra
Crypto is nascent and I would expect finger burning as part of the path to long term stability. I'm not personally wedded to any of the current implementations in their current versions, but long term the concept of crypto currency supplants governmental fiat money
jackric··on Diem – A rebrand of Facebook’s Libra
Accountable to a government body with opaque motives and capture over its citizens. Crypto has inspectable source code and miners and coin holders can jump ship if shenanigans are perceived

Another cool trick - use ephemeral memory SQLite database during unit tests:

conn = sqlite3.connect(":memory:")

But also run against your prod-like database (Postgres/MySQL etc.) later in the CI pipe to catch idiosyncratic database problems.

jackric··on Coup-Proofing the Startup
Yes. It felt like trying to read somebody playing "code golf" with the English language.
jackric··on Show HN: A Python container for dataclasses with multi-indexing and vector opps
Excellent, I've been adding lots of dataclasses to a project that has some pandas parts. Love the additional productivity from pyright type checking and found the type ambiguity of Dataframes annoying.
jackric··on Exxon to Slash 14,000 Jobs Worldwide as Oil Demand Drops
"economy collapsing" - what I'm seeing is demand leaving businesses that were habitual or not truly necessary. For example: work from home -> spend less on transport, spend less on mobile food, company spends less on office space.

Regrettably there's transition pain for workers in abandoned sectors but other sectors will grow out of this (e.g. deliveries/home office equipping/remote work centres).

This transformation of what work entails, to its essentials, with less office face time, will benefit civilization at large in the long run (Antifragile).

I support financially assisting & retraining displaced workers through this transformation, and am against "bailing out" obsoleted corporate entities.

jackric··on Facebook Is a 'Super Spreader' of Election Misinformation
It was there pre 2016 it just didn't have this catchy term "fake news" yet. Ever heard of Gell-Mann Amnesia?
jackric··on I reverse engineered McDonalds’ internal API
