jackphilson··on Veo 3 and Imagen 4, and a new tool for filmmaking called Flow
Then everyone can just get their own personal movies and infinite content stream. Honestly people would probably like that given how atomized society has become.

I think the result of an art piece is "wow that looks pretty cool / makes me feel this certain way". Human properties aren't required there. Sure, some art rests on there being human properties, but then AI wouldn't be able to replace it by definition. You can argue that AI lowers the discoverability of art that falls in the latter category, but I'd say that it's a solvable problem that can be fixed with better recommendation algorithms.
jackphilson··on A Research Preview of Codex
Yes. everyone will eventually have the job title of "problem solver"
jackphilson··on Thoughts on thinking
I think we think of it as 'extracting' because people are coerced into jobs that they hate. I think AI can help us exit the paradigm of working as extracting. Basically, passion economy (ai handles marketing, internet distribution). Allows you to focus on what you actually like, but it can actually make money this time.
jackphilson··on Clearly Incorrect
the answer is of course not to somehow convince society to devalue entertainment, but it is the responsibility of the educators to become more entertaining.
jackphilson··on AlphaEvolve: A Gemini-powered coding agent for designing advanced algorithms
Everyone will just turn into a problem solver until there are no more problems.
jackphilson··on We need more optimistic science fiction
I'm optimistic on AI enabling the passion economy helping out with this. If anyone can get their taste out there and an AI handles most of everything else (marketing, niching), people can focus on what they are good at (what they like).
jackphilson··on The Gang Has a Mid-Life Crisis
Even the amount of agency you have is a privilege. Hard determinism.
jackphilson··on Internet in a Box
probably access to chatgpt4o is a million times more useful than wikipedia imo
jackphilson··on The tools I love are made by awful people
Parodoxically, this aversion to convenience decreases his ability to make a positive impact. Much better to focus on improving your ability to make a positive impact instead.

Filling your mind with negativity makes you unhappy, outsources your power and attention ("minimize my impact", "do less bad"), and distracts you from doing good.

jackphilson··on I passionately hate hype, especially the AI hype
Don't be mad about their opinions, be grateful for the arbitrage opportunity
jackphilson··on I passionately hate hype, especially the AI hype
Fourth type: smart people who like hype because hype is fun and having fun is good.
jackphilson··on What's Happening to Students?
Actually this is the best time in human history since you get to choose your universe (where you live and who you interact with)

I think a way to maintain agency as well as avoiding overly restrictive regulations is an AI 'guardian' app that uses coherent extrapolated volition to nudge you toward your ideal self. Blocking sites, pushing productive content (aligned with what you deem productive of course). You can't stop digital drugs from being made, you can only stop yourself from accessing them. And you must find ways to do that for you and the people you care about. AI guardian aligned with your best interests would make this a lot easier.

This is so cool. I love this application of LLMs
jackphilson··on You can't optimize your way to being a good person
i think its the opposite. if you do actions that you consider to be good without considering how to be good more effectively, you probably just like the feeling of thinking of yourself as a good person more than actually being a good person

doing good is less about how happy it makes you feel and more about, well, how much you do good

jackphilson··on How do you do, fellow web developers? A growing disconnect
i wonder when people realize that this pattern of hating abstraction has always been wrong and foolish in retrospect
jackphilson··on The Google Willow Thing
I would recommend mathacademy.
jackphilson··on Daisy, an AI granny wasting scammers' time
which is why we need to adopt nuclear power so we run thousands of these so the odds of them picking up a bot instead of a person is overwhelmingly likely

i mean this is surely a prompting problem isnt it?
jackphilson··on Learning to Learn
I think 'fun' is a prerequisite for optimal learning, you can definitely have both.

And I think greater purpose is definitely a thing if you subscribe to a utilitarian moral framework

jackphilson··on Greppability is an underrated code metric
I wonder - why isn't this talked about more? We have had tens of thousands of software companies, each with probably a dozen people focused on hyperoptimizing everything. Why hasn't this point been talked about more on the internet to the point where it's obvious today? And it's not specifically about this, it's more in general. Do people just learn this on their own, and not say anything? Or is the discussion related to this topic buried in some old forum somewhere?

It's interesting how much a community can improve performance. It's hard to imagine him doing all of this without a hacking community to motivate him.

jackphilson··on Advice for new software devs who've read all those other advice essays
The problem isn't that mental capacity is finite, it's not (or the limit is too high to be relevant). The problem is that by spending time learning esoteric knowledge, you're only displacing time for more applicable knowledge.
