jacknobody··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black
Some think that if white people had been a dark colour, photography of dark skin would have been a priority, and the technology would have been developed accordingly.
jacknobody··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black
Aha. Then photographic consumer technology is racist. Things have always been built for the privileged...
jacknobody··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black
Of course with good equipment and care I'm sure you're quite right. I admit that I should have specified "casual" photographs, and I now sheepishly acknowledge great advances in camera technology since I followed that claim up with a modern digital camera. Yet even with good quality film cameras, and darkroom development, people have always had difficulty photographing very dark skin. So I expect that will be a continuing problem for facial recognition.
jacknobody··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black
In northern Cape York (Australia) I have several friends who cannot be successfully photographed because their skin is so dark that cameras are unable to resolve their facial features. I don't expect facial recognition to be much use on Cape York.

jacknobody··on An airline said her bag was lost, her tracker said otherwise. She flew to get it
So in the end, the customer finds that she is expendable. It's just so much easier to shift the blame, and it's not like anybody actually makes friends through good service in this anonymous world.

With no penalty for a low rate of failure, and insufficient incentive for people to be kind, failures like this are unavoidable.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: What's the best way to reduce echo in a space?
In New Zealand our eggs come in trays made of pulped newspaper. Here's a link to a photo: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d1/2d/25/d12d25728bff56b50396... I've seen people cover their walls with such egg trays, which they said helped a lot.
jacknobody··on Drug experts say alcohol worse than crack, heroin
Long ago I read a similar opinion about tobacco, saying it was harder to get off than heroin.

I asked an ex-junkie friend which was harder. She stared at me and said "Heroin - I reckon!", and I'm pretty sure she'd say the same of alcohol.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: Does posting to social media make you start doubting your grammar?
I'm very careful with my grammar when posting to HN - does that count?
jacknobody··on The Earthsea Trilogy (2003)
I think the world is fast-tracking to hell, right now. Le Guin's protagonists know spiritual effort and reward, and her novels encourage me to believe that there's more, and better, to be gained in life than material gain at the expense of my fellows.

Desperate!

How about we pull our collective head in, and learn to be content with what we have. (???)

jacknobody··on Sentence embeddings exhibit arithmetic properties
Hi :)

I had a related idea a few years ago...

Multiplication might be a good way to associate nouns with adjectives, but isn't kingship a quality of something? And what can we do about the confusion when the French King, a man, is also a woman?

How about:

Person is French King = (P.f.k) where k = royalty.manhood P.f.r.m We divide and multiply ~ Person is Martian Queen = P.m.r.w

Dogs might be added to owners eg: W+pug, and averages can be taken:

((W + dog.breed1) + (W + dog.breed2) + (W + dog.breed3) + (W + dog.breed4) / 4) = 4W/4 + the dogs = W + incomprehensible remainder

Perhaps there's a use for it all. Logistics maybe? Whether by the PM's system or mine, grammar can certainly be encoded in arithmetic-like forms.

Maybe it's just the way we think.

There's so much to say, that there's nothing to say. Except that I've known so many lonely men, like myself, and that the only thing that helps me is to make others' real happiness the goal of my own life.
jacknobody··on Looking back has the world richest man ever been refered to as a complete idiot?
Intelligence and goodwill towards others are often conflated by the good-hearted, whereas people are not always motivated by lovingkindness - and surely not always in the case of self-made superbillionaires.
jacknobody··on Radio frequency hearing in humans and its effects (2003)

jacknobody··on Radio frequency hearing in humans and its effects (2003)
There the piece suggests that KCl conduction is sufficient to enable the electric- acoustic effect, and brine is sea water, which also conducts.

So maybe a matrix of sensitive microphones in the sea can detect the direction of a radio signal.

jacknobody··on Radio frequency hearing in humans and its effects (2003)
Interesting.

Then I suppose a broadband RF detector can be made by aligning a tube of brine towards a source. Alternatively a 3D microphone array could be employed in an ocean.

External noise floor probably sets the maximum sensitivity, but should be possible to process most external noise out

jacknobody··on Ask HN: What everyday things would improve with lk99 superconductors?
Neither is anybody else really. It'll be as big as electricity and at least as dangerous. I wish I didn't live in such very interesting times.
jacknobody··on [dead]
Why, indeed? But don't think it's all the one way.

A particular reason that many men have difficulty with relationships is neglect - maternal neglect.

A victim of severe maternal neglect is usually also a victim of violence, either directly perpetrated by the mother or perpetrated by some other person at the mother's behest.

Irony: The victims of severe maternal neglect, just as the victims of male violence, understand the importance of kindness but have poor social function.

I think that until victim consciousness is forgotten, there's no chance of healing.

Therefore, in the fullness of time, all must find the strength to trust.

jacknobody··on Ask HN: If LK-99 works out, what does a super conductor do for us?
... and whatever happened to that rotating superconducting spacecraft project? Sounds like it would be a lot easier to test that "crazy?" notion.
jacknobody··on Ask HN: If LK-99 works out, what does a super conductor do for us?
Frictionless bearings...

Isn't it also thought that superconductors can carry heat without loss?
