jackjeff··on Updates to Full Disk Access in macOS
I do the same but I rely on devcontainers because editors like vscode, zed, etc… provide native support. It seems easier to use than asb.

If you open a project using a devcontainer it prompts you to build one. As long as you install all the tools you need in it, it just works.

Orbstack is much nicer than Docker to host the containers.

jackjeff··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Imagine all the flack the Chinese would take if it was one of their labs instead of OpenAI found doing abusing internet resources like tbis. Politicians would be talking about sanctions and new laws to protect America!
jackjeff··on I don't have a smartphone or at least I wish I didn't
Some banks. And requesting a French marriage certificate from abroad.

A few years ago I could have done it all on a Linux PC.

jackjeff··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Thanks your your feedback.

I just retried Zed and yeah, it's much much better than last time I gave it a shot!!!

I turned on the review stuff, and yeah I can do more or less what I could in Cursor. Check something. Do a quick inline promtp for the three lines I dislike and move on.

And of course the editor is so much nimbler/nicer.

No plan mode, but for big edits I'd probably use codex or something just like you. If you have any advice for integrating for that flow, I'll take them.

I guess whatever advantage cursor has, it will die once "Sol" is no longer integrated, as it was my favorite heavy work model. But I sure will miss the snappy auto/composer stack of Cursor.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. It’s sort of what I do too when I use codex/claude/t3 code, but usually via GUI.

The in-editor context review is something that does not seem long for first world. Sadly. Maybe I’ll be forced to make a zed extension or something, maybe on top of jujustu…

jackjeff··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Oh. Really? I guess that was not such an advantage after all… still cursor fast models are so much faster than what you get in Claude/codex.

I don’t see how opencode 2 (or 1) addresses any of my concerns. I thought it might avoid rg/grep the code base on every prompt but does not even seem to be the case.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve been trying to cancel my cursor subscription but I always come back. ;)

In the case of TUIs I’m going to assume you review the code externally in neovim or lazy git or something like that?

I don’t like relying on GIT for that and making things as good/done as I go. But with these agentic tools that’s what I have to do. Stage everything I like, manually edits a few bits.

But what do you when you find something where you want to say the agent: I don’t like this for reasons x and y redo as z. I’m like one shortcut away in context inside cursor to say that to my agent? You have to change tab in herdr and then what? Type the file name and line numbers? Is there a way to do this that does not seem very frustrating?

Also open code, codex, etc. super slow. They grep the code. Every. Single. Time. Cursor has a semantic index

jackjeff··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Will give it a try. Thanks!
jackjeff··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Interesting. Will check. Thanks!

I use codex all the time. It’s inferior to cursor for the two reasons mentioned. It rediscovers the world with rg (no indexing). Wall of diff at the end.

The GUI slightly better than Claude. And it’s a million times cheaper than Claude.

I do like Zed as an editor and I keep trying it out

but the the review what the AI did by jumping directly into the file with accept/reject/go next/next file with the ability to edit in place was nowhere near as good in zed vs cursor last I checked.

jackjeff··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Is there some kind of alternative to Cursor in these terms

- fast because the code is already indexed no need to start every prompt rediscovering the world with rg

- in editor/vscode review much better than relying on git diff at the very end. You can click on next button to jump there. Quick edit in place. Or a quick prompt (seconds) to fix something small

- in editor completion / quick edits, when you do things by hand.

It seems that everyone loves agentic Claude code things these days but I don’t understand how you can review what it did and remain as much in the flow as you do with cursor.

Also I find that incredibly slow. By the time Claude finished a prompt I could have done a few in cursor.

And mind you, I’ve been wanting to use zed instead but the clunky vscode fork called cursor. But cursor has just a better UX for AI integration even though it’s slow and guzzle up RAM.

jackjeff··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
If cars were just invented the EU would pass a mandate to ensure cars can’t have accidents.
jackjeff··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
The Snapdragon X2 Elite / Extreme are a thing but they lag a bit on the GPU side compared to to Apple.

But it’s not setting the PC laptop market on fire, and I’m quite surprised as well… I guess Lunar lake and the few ARM compatibility issues make it a worse option?

jackjeff··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
There’s a world of difference between using AI as an editor vs letting it write a whole essay for you. AI;DR is about the latter.
jackjeff··on As a Windows user, it's a surreal way to install a program
Or any folder. Most of my apps are in sub folders organized by category. :)
jackjeff··on Identity verification on Claude
So a fake ID but using your face?

How would they know? Does the US government expose their database to private businesses? I always wondered how these things work.

I normally run away from these ID checks. It’s just a matter of time until lone of these databases with everyone passports and videos get hacked. And vibe coding only makes it more likely.

I don’t care how good Claude is, it’s not good enough for that kind of risk.

jackjeff··on Anthropic apologizes for invisible Claude Fable guardrails
Well Anthropic did not ask for permission before they distilled copyrighted material.

At least the Chinese have the decency of giving back the model weights and not put BS censorship because “it’s too dangerous”.

jackjeff··on Microsoft BitLocker – YellowKey zero-day exploit
That’s the most puzzling part to me. What’s the point of the PIN then? I was assuming it was mixed with the TPM secret somehow but if it can be bypassed then it shows it just an IF statement somewhere. Dang…

God I hate this stupid design of burying the decryption key in the TPM and hoping the software does not get fooled to reveal it.

Microsoft always sucks. Why don’t you ask for the password at boot time and derive the key from it. So much simpler and makes this kind of attacks impossible. Nobody is going to bypass LUKS or FileVault like this.

jackjeff··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
They are? Nobody writes JavaScript anymore. Everything is Typescript. Even PHP and Python have sort of back ported type annotations. What major language is still purely dynamic these days?

I know the whole dynamic vs static typing is an age old flame war, but it sure seems that static is winning to me.

jackjeff··on The locals don't know
Same here. Potholes in England are part of the tourist package.
jackjeff··on EU calls VPNs "a loophole that needs closing" in age verification push
Too easy to dunk on the EU. The UK, USA and Australia seem to have reached the same conclusions. In UK all young males now have a VPN rather than do whatever you’re supposed to do to see porn. VPNs went from “nerd talk” to “vpn=porn” in the space of weeks. Whatever is next will suffer a similar fate.
jackjeff··on High-Level Rust: Getting 80% of the Benefits with 20% of the Pain
Isn’t this “high level rust” idea similar to swift?

Everything is ARC. Clones are cheap. But you still have a reasonable sound type system and no garbage collection.

I get it. Tooling on swift is meh the further you are from Apple, so I’m not suggesting it’s better.

But from a language point of view; is it not essentially a high level rust?

Ps. I don’t really know swift. Just asking where/why I’m wrong really.

jackjeff··on The TSA's New $45 Fee to Fly Without ID Is Illegal
Besides being racist this is kind of dumb. If you’re going to bring down the plane you’re defo not going to look like someone who gets randomly selected 100% of the time. Even the 9/11 terrorists knew this and shaved their beard instead of looking like the fundamentalists scumbags they were.

jackjeff··on Green card interviews end in handcuffs for spouses of U.S. citizens
Oh you can declare anything… but the minute you don’t pay you taxes you’ll realize it’s just words.
jackjeff··on Green card interviews end in handcuffs for spouses of U.S. citizens
I think this was explained before. But basically the processing takes so long (over a year) that you are guaranteed to overstay most visas and leaving the US is considered as abandoning your petition for a green card.

So you are in this limbo state where you are given some kind of status while the application is pending and you absolutely can’t leave the country.

But that’s not the issue here nor why people are being detained.

People came to the US with intend to marry and apply for a green card on non immigrant visa. For instance British citizens on a visa waiver can just show up and get married. That’s legal.

But it turns into immigration fraud if you always intended to apply for a green card afterwards.

What you are supposed to do is apply for a K1 fiancé visa which takes another year.
