From my own experience I would guess they know their orientation at all times.

In Guadalajara, Mexico, where I live. I've seen it first hand. People of certain age that lived near the center of the city use an absolute system for navigating the city, and to give directions on how to get to places with phrases like "up the river", "down the river", of an old river no longer existent that used to pass through the center of the city. And they always know which way goes to the center of the city, even when going outside the city center and to unknown neighborhoods. My father is one of such people.

jackbravo··on Pessimism is a barrier to progress
I like your take, we need to use proper words for each situation. I agree that full pessimism is a form of nihilism. And for full optimism I think the word is naiveness. Both are extremes that should be avoided. And in any good discussion, you want to hear both the optimist and pessimist takes (the reasonable ones), and plan accordingly.

It would be great to have some benchmarks against better-sqlite and the regular sqlite libraries, like in https://github.com/WiseLibs/better-sqlite3
jackbravo··on The Hiker’s Dilemma
Wow! Didn't notice that was the subtitle!
jackbravo··on The Hiker’s Dilemma
I agree :-p. If you want to exercise, and are going in a group, you can simple hike forward and backward in the trail, to make sure everyone is doing ok. When hiking in groups, for example with families, we do that, either some adult or a kid with a lot of energy is asked to go forward and then backwards to tell us how we are doing, and they enjoy the explorer role, while at the same time the little kids, or the grandparents in the group are also kept the loop and accompanied the whole way.

jackbravo··on Nearly 90% of U.S. households used air conditioning in 2020
I hope that in the future, the most advanced nations will be the ones leading the way on energy consumption, maybe because of technology, better regulation, and other factors.
jackbravo··on The History of ‘Ampersand’ (2020)
Probably latin wasn't the start ;-). We are not 2,000 years old hehe.
jackbravo··on An SPA Alternative
I do. I had never though about pronouncing it as spa, the word.

Sounds similar to the battles between es-queue-el and sequel for SQL.

jackbravo··on Scratch is a big deal
maybe Pharo or Squeak would be better alternatives as a follow up to Scratch?

I think python is also a great candidate.

jackbravo··on The Uber leak exposes the global war on workers
Taxi drivers can also, and often do, reject trip requests ^_^. At least in Mexico, where I live, if you ask to go to an inconvenient zone to the driver, they may refuse to take you and you need to wait for another taxi.

We know we have so much more to learn, but we hope that you will accept our apology and understand we’re humans behind this product with a capability and willingness to learn from our past mistakes.

jackbravo··on I'm Too Risk-Averse for Index Investing
He probably means that a systemic risk is a risk for the whole system, like the Russian and Ukranian stock markets now that they are at war.

I recommend you to read this old post about guess vs ask culture. You don't have to reply yes if you don't want to. Even if you are not working, you may have other reasons.

jackbravo··on Why is standing more tiring than walking? [audio]
Yes you could, because since you don't train regularly, going out for a 5k run could be very stressful. I've been there, when young 5k was, you could say easy, I could do it any day without warmup or specific training. But now, I can't run 5k without injuring myself. I need to prepare for several weeks before running 5k.
jackbravo··on Against SQL
Here in hacker news it was posted this article about the story of SQL biggest rival, QUEL, which is pretty related: https://www.holistics.io/blog/quel-vs-sql/?

It is not that we didn't try to replace it, but just as other comments have said, SQL was good enough, and already has the biggest mind share.

jackbravo··on Full text of Xi Jinping's speech on the CCP's 100th anniversary
Funny, in the same media outlet there are two different translations of the same speech. Emphasis mine:

The first one: ...we will never allow any foreign force to bully, oppress, or subjugate us. Anyone who would attempt to do so will __find themselves on a collision course__ with a great wall of steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people.

The second one (https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Xi-vows-to-crush-meddling-f...): the Chinese people will never allow any outside forces to bully, oppress or enslave us. Anyone who tries to do so will __be crushed to death before__ the Great Wall of steel built with the flesh and blood of over 1.4 billion Chinese people.

jackbravo··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
I agree with most of the parent comments. Commuting costs can be reduced, I biked to work when possible, and it was not possible when my kids were at school, which will be the same once things settle down. So it was the same cost with or without remote work.

Other rational companies could try to fix this without contributing upstream. Doing it upstream benefits competitors like gitlab. So yeah! It's nice seeing this kind of behavior
jackbravo··on What's going on here, with this human?
I loved this part, and it is something we try to do in my current company when interviewing. Interview for potential. What are they good for, even if not for us, and with the purpose of keep the door open if they decide to come back later.

> I also try to stick to the default assumption that “everyone is an A player at something.” It’s a more effective and more dynamic way to approach an interview—a live, fascinating puzzle to discover what the elephant and the rider do well—rather than going in with the purpose of determining whether someone is an A player in a binary, Manichean way. I prefer to imagine that I’m trying to find the candidate the best possible job for them; it may be the job I had in mind, or something else altogether.

jackbravo··on PHP in 2021
But to really come close to laravel I would add something like blitzjs.com or redwoodjs.com. Blitz is built on top of next and adds ORM (Prisma), code generators, even authentication out of the box, so it's really close to Laravel. Redwood is its own thing AFAIK, but also aims to be closer to a full stack framework.
