jackbravo··on Remix Vite Is Now Stable
why do you want to bundle raw SQL files?
jackbravo··on Remix Vite Is Now Stable
I like using https://www.remix-validated-form.io/, which you would use to get a type safe validated object before doing the submit. And then you could reuse the validator on the backend as well.
jackbravo··on Remix Vite Is Now Stable
Just migrated a couple of projects from remix 1 to remix 2. It wasn't a walk in the park, but it was well planned by their team, by first adding feature flags to v1 where you could slowly adopt v2 APIs, and then switch. I think you can even run v2 with a v1 API backport layer. So I think they have a good approach to stability vs improving their product.

The really hard part has been migrating other stuff like CJS to ESM, or upgrading other dependencies like cypress, but that is not related to remix.

jackbravo··on Should I open source my company? (2022)
I agree that when a big cloud company tries to emulate you, you are already winning on a normal company. But maybe not for a venture-backed/big-exit-strategy startup. And probably, those early investors are the ones recommending against fully open-source business models.

> And because the correspondence was private, he did not feel the need to hide his true views, which he might have done in more formal academic settings and among his colleagues at the IAS

I don't think that being private necessarily means that it is showing his true views. In private, we often feel more relaxed and express ourselves differently than in public. But in private conversations, you can express a point of view in one conversation and a different one in another. We often tend to accommodate our audience.

I think that idea in particular is quite good actually ^_^

I mean, I'm not imagining that they have groceries listings on the app, but that the app allows you to transfer money directly to someone from your crypto wallet. Like a venmo payment but with crypto.

jackbravo··on LinkedIn is laying off nearly 700 employees
I thought this was a joke, but then he puts it right in his profile:

> PLEASE READ PROFILE. While some people use LinkedIn for "networking" and advertising their "personal brand," I use this site exclusively as a dating platform. If you are intelligent, attractive, female, in or visiting San Diego, and perhaps a bit out of the norm, I might be interested. Send me a message and invite me out for a drink! (and please make it clear you are asking me on a date) All non-dating related messages will be ignored.

But at the same time seems like it is a failed platform for him too:

> UPDATE. LinkedIn is too full of faux career climbers and not enough dating opportunity. Follow me on Instagram @georgehotz

jackbravo··on Organizing multiple Git identities
about the "cons", another con is that granting access to your unified account from your work or business perspective is "tricky". Github Business accounts can grant specific access only for people identifying with your company's identity provider, like okta or similar. So that can potentially reduce that risk as well, so that your employer can revoke access to okta, and thus revoke access to work repositories, for example. Without that you need to be very strict and do some manual work to grant and revoke accesses.
jackbravo··on A little-known pollution rule keeps the air dirty for millions of Americans
But, but but. If an event makes the air super dirty, the government should look for ways to make sure we all put our gran of salt on fixing the problem, instead of hiding it.

jackbravo··on Canada had poached 10k tech workers from the U.S. – in just 48 hours
Poached is indeed a bad term. But from what I understood, they have not employed any new worker, they just gave them visas, most should be still working for US companies, and are using this as an escape plan in case their US Visas are not extended to avoid returning to their original country.

maybe try using caddyserver.com instead of nginx? It is also a go project, and has a very simple configuration syntax. The automatic SSLs feature is what made my try it in the first place.
jackbravo··on FedNow Is Live
This got me surprised too. In Mexico we are also used to giving our bank account CLABE number (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLABE) that is used to transfer without fees and instantly. Even small shops use it to get paid, friends to split dinner, etc.
jackbravo··on Rio: Terminal app built over WebGPU, WebAssembly and Rust
I love that Terminal.app, out of the box, changes the colorcheme depending on your desktop dark or light configuration. iTerm does this on new versions, but only on 10.14 and later, which my company doesn't support yet :-p
jackbravo··on Rio: Terminal app built over WebGPU, WebAssembly and Rust
in their README:

> Is it really the fastest terminal emulator?

Benchmarking terminal emulators is complicated. Alacritty uses vtebench to quantify terminal emulator throughput and manages to consistently score better than the competition using it. If you have found an example where this is not the case, please report a bug.

Other aspects like latency or framerate and frame consistency are more difficult to quantify. Some terminal emulators also intentionally slow down to save resources, which might be preferred by some users.

If you have doubts about Alacritty's performance or usability, the best way to quantify terminal emulators is always to test them with your specific usecases.

jackbravo··on Sahil Lavingia of Gumroad – The Future of Flexible Companies
There are cooperatives (coops), were workers are also owners. But there you are not working for several companies building equity on all. But most US I knew of are no longer active. Only https://www.gcoop.coop/ in Argentina.

Oh, and found this articles: http://www.vintagedigital.net/content/setting-software-co-op and https://www.scribd.com/document/26587085/Tech-Coop-How-To

And also the Hacking Business Model proposed by Monty from MySQL fame was similar to the coop model: https://www.forbes.com/sites/reuvencohen/2012/07/25/the-hack...

jackbravo··on Upcoming Bugzilla releases and more fun stuff
Any users of github for issue tracking? I see tons of open source projects using them and I find it also simple enough on one hand, but with enough features:

- labels

- milestones

- templates for PRs and issues

- simple linking system between issues and PRs

- @mentions

- and the new project interface is pretty good, with kanban boards and table reports

I wish more enterprise projects used that instead of jira, since also a lot of enterprise projects are already using github for code repositories.

jackbravo··on Mandatory helmet laws make cyclists less safe
Politicians usually don't do anything unless they see a demand for it on their citizenship. Just hoping they will build better infrastructure is naive. And if you want to increase the number of cyclists, laws that make it harder, like helmet requirements, will of course slow the demand.
jackbravo··on What not to say to someone who has just been laid off
Oh wow. What would be more appropriate in a collectivist culture? Avoiding the message and instead go over to their house to do the things suggested above?
jackbravo··on What not to say to someone who has just been laid off
Indeed, I'm finding that a lot of people find a phone call scary or threatening, and are much more comfortable with a text message, or even an audio message. At the same time, a dinner offer should be great for someone close enough, but in remote work that is more rare to happen.

Writing a recommendation on LinkedIn, to me, seems like the most actionable thing one can do in such cases.

From my own experience I would guess they know their orientation at all times.

In Guadalajara, Mexico, where I live. I've seen it first hand. People of certain age that lived near the center of the city use an absolute system for navigating the city, and to give directions on how to get to places with phrases like "up the river", "down the river", of an old river no longer existent that used to pass through the center of the city. And they always know which way goes to the center of the city, even when going outside the city center and to unknown neighborhoods. My father is one of such people.
