jack-bodine··on Apple M5 could ditch unified memory architecture for split CPU and GPU designs
Not mentioned in the article, but another motivation behind this could be that with split a CPU/GPU Apple could try to up-sale on both when purchasing Macs.

The prices they charge just to go from 16GB to 32GB of RAM is outrageous ($400 for Macbook pro).

jack-bodine··on The Nanohertz Gravitational-Wave Detection Explained
If gravitational waves can be detected by looking at pulsars, then what is the purpose of LIGO and ground-based gravitational wave observatories? Is there any difference in the waves detected by LIGO and those from observing pulars?
jack-bodine··on Digital addiction: Focusing on the cure, not the disease
I have to disagree with you. I know people who genuinely spend 10+ hours a day on the net, completely wasting their time. These aren't people who are browsing HN for short breaks while working. These are the people who live in their parents basements or dorm rooms playing league of legends, watching twitch or browsing reddit while ignoring classes, education and/or serious work.

Newspapers and radio didn't result in people spending 40+ hours a week following the news. There probably are some people addicted to TV, but it's such a minority that we don't consider it an issue.

jack-bodine··on Microsoft’s Bing chatbot is getting ads
I can't help but feel uneasy about the implications for accuracy and trustworthiness. It's reminiscent of the current state of search engines, where ads often compromise the user experience. I'm curious to see how long it takes for ad-supported LLMs to become the standard, and if we'll eventually see Kagi-esque alternatives rise to offer paid, more reliable versions.
jack-bodine··on Today we are launching our new Twitter API access tiers
If Twitter was planning on re-releasing their API after shutting it down last month their communication has been completely incompetent.

Who would trust them enough to build a product based on an API with a record of shutting down without notice?

Honestly, I doubt tweetbot and similar apps will return.

jack-bodine··on Multimodal GPT-4 to be released next week
I wonder if GPT-4’s release was pushed forward to ride the hype that ChatGPT/LLMs have been getting in popular media.

But then again, GPT-3 is almost three years old now, plenty of time to improve upon and train a new model.

jack-bodine··on Show HN: Textual Markdown – a Markdown “browser” in the terminal
Does anyone know what MacOS terminal is being used in the demo video and screenshots?
jack-bodine··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2022?
Fiction: American Gods by Neil Gaiman Non-Fiction: The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff
jack-bodine··on Advent of Code 2022
For the unfamiliar: "Advent of Code is an Advent calendar of small programming puzzles for a variety of skill sets and skill levels that can be solved in any programming language you like. People use them as interview prep, company training, university coursework, practice problems, a speed contest, or to challenge each other."
jack-bodine··on Astronomers reveal first image of the black hole at the heart of our galaxy
This announcement was released simultaneously with 6 papers that use the newly released data. They are linked in the bottom of the press release and are definitely worth checking out.
jack-bodine··on It's time for Apple to bring back Safari for Windows
In my opinion, there are enough alternative web browsers available and no substantial reason to bring Safari to windows. Most of the safari specific features that I can think of (ex. syncing tabs between iCloud devices) are things that benefit people already invested in the apple ecosystem and are likely mac users anyways.
jack-bodine··on Meet the 45 Tesla Hybrid Magnet
An operation cost of $1,452/hour seems surprisingly cheap to super cool, power and operate a magnet of this size. I wonder if this price is considered a significant accomplishment among the scientists.
jack-bodine··on Firefox 89 Tab Appearance
Can anyone explain why companies like to make unnecessary design changes? It seems to be that there’s no benefit to this tab change. Other products like Discord and Google Meet have also been making slight UI changes recently and I find it nothing but a nuisance.
jack-bodine··on Ask HN: Have you stopped reading books?
I have been reading a lot less than normal since January. In my case, I just got caught up with work and needed to do something more relaxing in my little free time.

My amount of reading has greatly varied from month to month throughout my whole life. I’d say it’s pretty normal to naturally take a break from it every now and then.

jack-bodine··on Pixel could soon take time-lapses of the Milky Way
I think the pixel’s astrophotography mode has got to me one of my favorite phone gimmicks ever. It’s fun, cool to show people, and stays out of the way and doesn’t try to be a bigger feature for advertisement.
jack-bodine··on Ask HN: How can we mitigate the ill-effects of a worsening Google Search?

jack-bodine··on I Used to Be a Human Being – How we are all becoming information addicts
One thing that I like about this article is the authors point that digital human interaction is incomparable to real human interaction.

I spent much of my teen years on Skype or Discord playing video games with friends. Although, I still consider these close relationships, I feel we missed out on a lot of bonds and development that we could've only gotten by spending more time in person.

jack-bodine··on Smartphone technology able to generate images of surrounds from sound alone
Basically the article is saying that some sort of echolocation is possible with the technology in smartphones. I don't get why they suggest it could be the future of CCTV, unless they want to map out everybody's pockets
jack-bodine··on M1 iPad Pro over 50% Faster Than Previous Generation in Early Benchmarks
Xcode on iPad would look great and possibly draw many more professional app devs to the platform. But I just can’t see myself ever trying to develop seriously on an iPad.
jack-bodine··on A Somewhat Comprehensive History of U.S. Senators Who Have Died in Duels
I don’t have a death wish or anything but death by duel has got to be one of the coolest ways to go.
jack-bodine··on Amazon Sidewalk
Yeah, the privacy section only mentioned 'encryption,' nothing about personal data or data collection.
jack-bodine··on Why I Love Coding (2012)
There really is a special kind of satisfaction when you see something you wrote actually work. I remember the first time I made a sprite move around the screen with arrow keys, I probably moved that guy around for several minutes just out of pride. I'm sure we all have similar memories.
jack-bodine··on Astrobiologists have released the preliminary results of a SETI survey
I think the question isn't whether or not we are alone, but why don't we know the answer. As you said, it's 'wildly improbable that we are alone.' So the great question is, why is the universe so quiet?
