jachwe··on Why we are leaving Dropbox
The title of the article was "4 reasons why we are leaving Dropbox" and not "10 alternatives to Dropbox", which would be an interesting, but totally different article on it's own. It is good to read about these issues, as these days many people think about moving from A to B in cloud storage.

Personally i moved all my storage, contacts and calendars over to a self-hosted owncloud instance, which i did not regret so far. But i'm not going to write an article about it ...

jachwe··on HackMIT Puzzle Guide
Look behind you, a three headed monkey!
jachwe··on Show HN: Eventhandler, a game where you play by triggering browser events (2012)
Very cool and addictive. Reminds me of "z-type" which already killes hundreds of my working hours. :-)
jachwe··on Show HN: Online Design Thinking Coach
This is an app to guide you through the entire process of Design Thinking in an (interactive) online course.

It was originally build as an iPad Webapp. Now i ported it to the web to see if there is any response and interest in this app.

For now it's only in german. I am planning in proper refactoring an l18n if there is a good amount of (positive) response.

jachwe··on US Coast Guard visits mysterious Google barge
It's for porn.
jachwe··on Joblint: test tech jobs for sexism, culture, expectations, and recruiter fails
Nice job, funny idea!

Mentioning Dreamweaver should be handled as an error rather then a notice. :-)

jachwe··on Regexper: Beautiful regexp visualizations
nice tool. bookmarked and upvoted. :-) thank you.

Next level would be to turn this around and build a (nice) visual regexbuilder. The would be fing nice.

jachwe··on Brython - Python to Javascript translator
Looks really cool. And i love Python. However, I think the Python Syntax will make it hard to minify the code, which is probably not that important anyway when not in production. But for production usage it would be cool to have a real compiler instead of an interpreter.

But yeah. Cool stuff.

jachwe··on How we send a morning email to users around the world.
I would prefer a settings page where i can opt in oder out for certain mailings (if not mandatory) and set the timesettings myself.

Relying on the header information might lead to wrong results as some people changed settings and it relies on the browser. (Though i guess thats not valid for many users)

But while you're there, one can also set time to receive emails themself. Maybe i want to have it earlier because half of my tasks already need to be done by 7am.

Of course, the best is to combine both, having a settings page with default value gathered from the browser.

Nice article which really covers the problem many people aren't thinking about.

jachwe··on Show HN: All films for rental on iTunes (in 61 stores) by price/popularity/genre
"Sorry, but Goodfilms doesn't run on older versions of Internet Explorer at this time."

I really support this. But not if i'm getting this in Chrome 22.

And theres no way around.

jachwe··on Clipping images in HTML with clipPath
i like the approach.

also (in webkit) you can use an svg data url in your css mask-image to eliminate the extra request. works like a charme for all elements.

jachwe··on JsPlumb
Awesome. This looks really good. How is the performance with many elements?

Since i first used yahoo pipes, years ago, i have a project in mind where i could use exactly this functionality.

I was always to lazy to give it a shot on my own, but i think now would be the right time. I'll keep you updated.

Thank you.

jachwe··on Buttons that morph out of the surface of the device.
why is everybody ranting on this nice technology and ignores the fact that the sites image and css ressources aren't loading?!
jachwe··on Extreme JavaScript conferences (Eiffel Tower, Antarctic, etc.)
and why?
jachwe··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (June 2012)

No conventional Web Development. :-)

(edited for proper link)

jachwe··on Phantom cell phone vibration (or I am not going insane after all)
I know this to well. This and how i always check for the Mailnotification in my Dock if there is any little background sound in the musictrack i'm listening to.

But it's not about addiction i suppose. It's a natural behaviour of our brain to save energy by recognizing patterns instead of recomputing. So yes, the tech break will help, but no, i am not addicted to my phone.

(edited a typo)

jachwe··on Leap: A new gesture based interface for devices
Motions like using a mouse or a keyboard are not a single bit more intuitive for flying planes or shootings guns. It just an issue of familiarisation with the interface as it was with the mouse, as it was the keyboard.

Beside that, it really doesn't matter as these were only two examples of a large variety of possible applications. If it doesn't fit the need - don't use it. There are other interfaces. There is no need for one interface to rule them all but for interfaces that really hits the spot for particular applications.

Regarding Leap: Looks really promising. Though i would prefere if it would be "hidden". Anyhow, can't wait to get my on it. Or over it.

jachwe··on Touché by Disney Research brings touch control to everyday things
that's awesome. in this application it would be hard though to sense the position of these gestures i.e. where in the liquid you touched. but combined with other sensing technologie (like optical or traditional capacitive) that would be a HIT.
jachwe··on Facebook Stops You From Posting ‘Irrelevant Or Inappropriate’ Comments
@nikcub I think it's not a coincidence.

In fact FB declines Post and Messages for a while already. For example you can't post or comment and include a picture from imgur, while it (obviously) fine from other hosts. Thats what i experienced so far, but i can imagine there are other examples.

That does not need to be censorship. Might be that they got an agreement about not hotlinking or hosting imgur images for copyright reasons.

jachwe··on Learning VIM while playing a game
had a lot of fun until it crashes the chrome tab. (like everytime)
jachwe··on Show HN: Chat with HN users while you visit HN
Chat is NOT dead. See campfire for example which even is a quite new chat tool. In fact, entire companies (including my own) are using chat for all their internal communication and were doing this for years. Maybe the anonym chatroom for teenager in the 90s is dead, but that is for good reason. The Chat as a tool itself is still really powerful and effective. (and widely used)

The implementation of rabblr also is really cool. But i think the part with the anonymous users might be a problem. I just logged in for a few minutes and it was full of trolling. Also that you can't carry the chat over multiple pages is anoying, but there might be a way around that. Plus i really don't want to talk to random people on webpages. I probably want to talk to someone who can give me an information that i want, which would be a site adminstrator or company staff or whatever. Like olark. Or i want to talk to my friends or people i know, but i can do that on any IM that i got open anyway.

So to sum it up. Nicely done, but i also doubt the usefulness of this tool.
