j_autumn··on Show HN: WorkOrPay – Set goals, form contracts, pay a penalty if you fail
Reminds me of gofuckingdoit.com from Pieter levels.
j_autumn··on Avoiding the top Nginx configuration mistakes
I like Caddy: https://caddyserver.com/ Nice community and enough features for my (basic) use cases.

The only thing that I don’t quite like is the logging format.

j_autumn··on More than 1M fewer students are in college, the lowest numbers in 50 years
May I ask which Bootcamp that was? I’m interested in learning more about marketing :)
j_autumn··on Vimium C – Extension to navigate website by keyboard shortcuts
Oh yes it is! Wouldn't it be easy to add an option to block this behaviour? Like a flag in about:config or something.
j_autumn··on Vimium C – Extension to navigate website by keyboard shortcuts
> still a week does not pass without me mourning the death XUL...

I'm coping by suppression. ;)

Haven't looked to much into the alternatives like Waterfox/Pale Moon et al. How are they security wise? Do they offer patches immediately?

j_autumn··on Vimium C – Extension to navigate website by keyboard shortcuts
I loved VimFX and am in the same boat - It was really the best browsing experience.

I remember being upset for months when they killed XUL.

Wish Mozilla would finally start being their old self again and create a browser that is truly customizable. Call it Firefox Pro, I would happily pay for that. But instead we get “Colorways”..

j_autumn··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
That does sound like fun! Very cool activity.

Sadly I never got into reversing. How did you learn that? Can you recommend some resources?

j_autumn··on Ask HN: How do you make money on the side in tech?
Whenever I read these kind of salaries I feel like I’m doing something fundamentally wrong.

30yo, European based with lousy 60k/year. With the rising real estate prices I probably won’t even be able to afford a house in my lifetime. (Except maybe with a working SO - but even then until I’m too old for work)

I’d say if it’s it just about earning more money maybe work overtime for a little salary boost. Hard to beat that $/h.

j_autumn··on Ask HN: How do I successfully register a new Twitter account these days
I never added a phone number and thus the account got flagged immediately. Just shoot the twitter support a mail and they can unflag you.
j_autumn··on Ask HN: Design Mentor?
I don’t work as a Designer but I do dabble in web development and design in my free time. Would gladly take a look at some designs and lend my eyes for some critique/advice.

Any way to contact you?

j_autumn··on Ask HN: I'm a terrible developer, what now?
Thank you for these words, i needed it.
j_autumn··on Ask HN: How to Sell Software?
Asking myself the same question, it seems hard while starting out especially for B2B.

A “good way” seems to be to cold call / cold e-mail businesses that would benefit from the product. This is sadly considered illegal in germany. The only way to get in contact with them would be if they sign up for a mailinglist, which needs a lot of marketing money. Maybe someone knows other good ways?

Attending events, conferences, etc. is not possible either during the pandemic.

2020 doesn’t seem to be a good year trying to start a company :(

j_autumn··on I Don't Want to Be a Founder
I love your mindset and I am not too far off myself. For me it’s not about being able to buy luxuries but to “buy time”.

Time is - in my opinion - the most valuable resource that we have. Working for the man is trading your time with money given a specific conversation ( your salary ). I’d like to shoot to have a better conversation (I’m EU based and salaries here are not so great compared to the US) while not being tied to a specific location. With the plus of being able to work on whatever you fancy.

I think becoming rich is less about spending that money but more about the financial independence. So it’s not about not going to work but to don’t have to go to work.

j_autumn··on I Don't Want to Be a Founder
Can you explain a bit more about the migration process?

I’ve read that the “most straightfoward way” is to create a new GmbH and transfer all the IP away from the Einzelunternehmen. It seemed kinda complicated though. (As everything is when dealing with the Finanzamt IMO)

j_autumn··on I Don't Want to Be a Founder
Can you elaborate on that?

My tax adviser told me I should go for a Einzelunternehmen (especially use the Kleingewerbe during the first year) because of the reduced costs (registration costs 25EUR and thats it) and not having the overhead. I’ve heard that registering a UG costs about ~500EUR + yearly costs of around 1500 EUR.

Given that this is during a beginning to try things out - without having too much money laying around to play with it.

Would definitely like to know about risks before getting myself into it.

j_autumn··on I Replaced My MacBook Pro with a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB for a Day
Probably using Ethernet over usb. I tried the same with a pi zero, one only need to change some config options in the boot partition.

Weirdly I wasn’t able to do get the Ethernet working. Couldn’t ssh into the pi :(

Maybe because of a cable problem, but I never found out.

j_autumn··on NoDesign.dev – Tools and resources for non-artistic developers
1+ for the book. It gives enough inspiration for a clean look. The guy also worked together with Adam on Tailwindcss which is a nice class-based css framework which makes designing website a lot of fun. Especially because it gives some “constraints” i.e. only a handful of size options. Makes the whole design more consistent in my opinion.

I used to do a lot of web design back in ~2004-2008 before i became a developer, and while i like that the web nowadays is more accessible the design of today lacks individuality. The brand design is more shaped by the choice of colors and fonts imho.

j_autumn··on My First Year as a Freelance AI Engineer
I know right? 40$/h FTE here. Not an AI engineer though.
j_autumn··on Ask HN: How to earn money on the side?
No problem!

I mostly use Splunk, since I have to correlate a lot of different data sources.

You can also set up an ELK stack (Elasticsearch / Logstash / Kibana)

My excel skills are not that advanced, but depending on the result you want to achieve it might be sufficient.

j_autumn··on Ask HN: How to earn money on the side?
Thanks for the input, and the whole „liability issue“ is something that I worry about. Being a sole-proprietor here (EU) means that you are liable with every personal asset, but it’s cheaper to set up and has not as much bureaucracy overhead.

I was also thinking about using something like Stripe Atlas to set up a US company, but I‘m not sure how expensive it is to run it (hire an tax attorney etc) over the year if it doesn’t generate any money.

I mean, I probably just have to try it out without worrying too much

j_autumn··on Ask HN: How to earn money on the side?
That is a nice idea! I always wanted to write a fiction book, and I think it could be a nice hobby. Thanks for the input :)
j_autumn··on Ask HN: How to earn money on the side?
Consultancy was something that I thought about too. But I’m not sure if I feel „ready“ for it. Maybe there is a slight imposter syndrome here. I could see myself do consultant work for a week a month or so, never thought about arbitrage something like this. How difficult is the bureaucracy here? Having employees / paying them + their insurance seems like a lot of overhead to me.

Do you have more information how you would tackle that problem?

j_autumn··on Ask HN: How to earn money on the side?
I‘m from the EU and don’t earn a lot of money, so no wealth here which I could invest.

But I would love to be able to earn enough to live (simple, I don’t need a luxury life) while saving the rest to become financial independent at some point.

j_autumn··on Ask HN: How to earn money on the side?
I would prefer something simple too. Solving hard problems is fine, but I tend to prefer simple infrastructure vs „resume driven“ tech.

Mobile apps is something that I thought about too, the ease of distribution seems like a big win, but isn’t it hard to sell on these platform nowadays because they get flooded with x numbers of apps every day?
