j79··on Cool Backgrounds
A quick peek and it appears they're using pure css!
j79··on Facebook is launching a dating feature
Hey, you gotta impress investors somehow!
j79··on Facebook is launching a dating feature
But it's not impossible. I've never used Messenger.
j79··on Variable object keys
TLDR; Use square bracket notation.
j79··on Why are diapers so expensive?
My son is 4 months old. For the first few months, 12 changes a day was definitely not an outlier. However, we were very quick to change his diaper once we noticed it was wet.

$1000/yr for diapers is definitely possible. You and I may have the luxury of purchasing diapers in bulk, but for many people (such as the young woman in the article), 32 diapers for 10 bucks is reality.

j79··on Facebook has lost $100B in 10 days and now advertisers are pulling out
Yep, my brother decided to join Facebook in a non-tech role (admittedly, right before the #deletefacebook movement began), and it was purely for the compensation. He even joked he had joined "the dark side". I've been off Facebook since 2011, so it was a bit disappointing. But, the compensation was the highest out of the companies he got offers from (Google, Stripe, etc.), so I don't blame him.
j79··on A letter about Google AMP
Not OP, but the primary issues I'm not a fan (on iOS) are:

1) Performance - Yes, it LOADS fast, but MANY pages "feel" janky, when scrolling, especially pages that allow you to load additional accords by scrolling left/right. Only the simplest pages don't "jank" on my device.

2) Scrolling - It isn't the native scroll. It seems to be a div with "overflow-scrolling" applied. Other than that feeling "off", it prevents the bottom toolbar from hiding, reducing screen real estate.

3) Sharing URLs.

4) Biggest: No way to opt-out. I'm a fan of the open web. It's why I prefer a website to a sandboxed experience you get with native apps. At least for the first click on Google SERP pages, I'm "stuck" with google.com.

One note: I get the AMP use case, and I'm sure there are users who prefer AMP pages for the performance they see. However, I'm fortunate enough to live in an area with decent mobile speed/bandwidth, and loading the original pages are rarely "slow" on my device. However, the originals all address the issues I noted above. I'll take the .5-1 second delay for the original(s), over the AMP version.

j79··on Older Adults' Forgetfulness Tied to Faulty Brain Rhythms in Sleep
Ah, I'll have to share this with my wife! We welcomed our first child in November. Since then, we've been pretty sleep deprived thanks to the nightly feedings and diaper changes. Both of us were remarking this morning how forgetful we had become, even to the point that we couldn't recall how the night had gone.
j79··on Amazon's Fake Review Problem
Fulfillment By Amazon
j79··on First field report of iPhone X
My wife and I both have iPhone 6s. She upgraded and has regretted it since. Very slow wake up, unlocking, and app switching are just some issues. There's a lag with most actions. Random app crashes (even those updated), and battery life has dropped significantly.
j79··on Amazon Echo Spot
The Technical Details (https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-MW46WB-Introducing-Echo-Spot/d...) indicates a "Front Facing Camera".
j79··on Launch HN: 70MillionJobs (YC S17) – Job board for people with criminal records
The majority of images (and there are not many) seem to be black. The hero images, the About pages, all young black people. The only white person is the CEO (which show up predominately on the blog and about the team)

As others have mentioned, our prisons are not predominately filled with people of color (although, I'm sure many people would believe that to be). A bit more diversity would definitely be nice ;)

j79··on “We will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020”
While I agree, a lot of what you said isn't limited to the lack of Flash, but just trends in general. Websites could be more interactive, animated (even with sound, if desired...but please...no), and have some dimension. Unfortunately, everything looks/feels like Bootstrap-themes, because they are.

I personally started off animating in Macromedia Director. I played around with Lingo. I moved to Flash / Actionscript and loved the change. In a similar fashion, I'm totally excited about the future of Animation / Games (and how Canvas plays into that). There have been some huge strides by vendors and developers to improve animation and gaming on the web, and I suspect that will continue before Flash is EoL.

Flash being discontinued makes me sad, but purely in a sentimental way - I'm very excited about what comes next :)

j79··on Amazon raised Prime Day prices, misleading consumers, says vendor
I saw a lot of comments saying "Prime Day" was really "Prime Marketing Day". Seems that was the case.
j79··on Replacing ‘that = this’ assignments in JavaScript with Arrow Functions
It could get messy if you're doing stuff with Canvas, but I've used "ctx" in the past to denote the context change.
j79··on One Dollar Glasses – Help for 150M people
I would love to buy glasses on-line, but have a simple issue of having an absolute massive head. Unless I go in and physically try on a pair, I just have to assume it won't fit (usually the width of face, but temple length is also a pain...)

:(

j79··on MacBook Pro
Given the opening of the Keynote and the focus around accessibility, I'm really curious how Touch Bar will work for non-sighted users. Will it require running your finger over the controls while VoiceOver relays the context of the button? Or, will the Touch Bar require "focusing" where a user swipes through the buttons, similar to iOS?

Personally, I don't need application aware function keys (sure, emojis are cool in messages...) and would love an option for the 15" MBP to have physical keys, similar to the 13" option...

j79··on Visual Studio Code 1.5
Oh man, reading your comment made me super excited. Hopefully "eventually" will be of the sooner variety ;) Joking aside, thank you for this comment, and also your contributions to a great piece of software!
j79··on Visual Studio Code 1.5
Just beating a dead horse here, but I really wish Microsoft would add "hot exit" for unsaved files. It's been in Sublime Text since 2011. Nearly all my Mac apps support this feature natively. Why, in 2016, if VS Code crashes, do I lose all my unsaved files. Especially when I want to treat an instance as merely a scratch pad for ideas.

Supposedly it's Under Review. Hopefully, the next release has it.

j79··on Did I just win?
An acknowledgement of the win: https://twitter.com/DefuseSec/status/730903547747819520

The offer still stands though, if you'd like to try: https://twitter.com/DefuseSec/status/730904219419443200

j79··on Report: FBI moves to interview Clinton over emails
Some have speculated that it could be an honest Q&A with the former SoS based on their findings (to get an official response). Others are speculating that it could be a chance to actually catch her in a lie, based on their findings ("Five months ago, you stated X, is that still true?" having evidence that X is no longer true).

Pure speculation, of course, but man would I like to be a fly on THAT wall...

j79··on Google says self-driving car hits municipal bus in minor crash
Interesting point. Would be interesting if this lead to remote drivers who are responsible for navigating self driving car when the car decides human intervention is safest? (At least until all cars on the road are self driving and connected to each other for real time communication...)
j79··on Pinterest Raises $367M at $11B valuation
And maybe the guys at Pinterest realize that, which is why they're building up their cash war chest before the funding dries up?
j79··on JPMorgan Says Data Breach Affected 76M Households
As a Chase customer (checking/auto) who happens to be an eBay user that shopped at Target during the data breach, this is getting really old. I wonder at what point do companies start requesting we change our account numbers (similar to passwords)?
j79··on Show HN: Picnic.css, a lightweight Bootstrap alternative
One thing I noticed missing (or that you should consider) is keyboard accessibility. If I tab through the page, I quickly get lost where I'm at (until I focus on an text input element).
j79··on Color for the Colorblind
Do they sell a pair of sunglasses that's marketed towards people without color blindness.

http://enchroma.com/shop/nrg-explorer/

Supposedly, it boosts saturation of colors to create "vivid" and "bright" worlds.

I'd love to try them.

j79··on The limits of "unlimited" vacation
Before I moved to California, I lived in a state where passing in the breakdown lane (during certain hours) was permitted. I had coworkers who were unaware of this rule and felt those passing were "jerks". Even explaining that it wasn't illegal, they still felt they were "jerks" for not waiting with everyone else...

I guess it's similar to lane splitting by motorcycles. Moving from a state where this is illegal to one where it's legal was a shock (although I see a ton of people lane splitting at insanely dangerous speeds...)

j79··on Bitcoin Bank Closes after $600,000 Theft
I agree.

While not bitcoin, I played around with dogecoin for a while (I was tipped about 3000 doge on reddit for a post). Right before Christmas, dogewallet was hacked (where I had transferred my doges to). Some good folk over at reddit band together to work on helping out those of us who were hacked. I create a new wallet, and then submit my info for donation doges.

A week or so later, they send me 3000 doges. I didn't realize until I checked my account (a few days after it was sent) that they had sent them. Here's the interesting part - less than an hour after they had sent it to me, those 3000 doges were immediately withdrawn and sent to another address.

Thankfully, I was playing around with Doge (so the value was all of a dollar fifty), but the entire thing turned me off. If this was bitcoin, or if I had actual money invested, I would have lost my investment TWICE.

I like to think I'm some what technically savvy, but in that moment, I realized I had no clue what the hell had happened. Trying to imagine my parents working with bitcoin...never.

j79··on WebGL Water
In addition to the water spike, I think the lack of a "splash" when the water hits the surface makes it feel off. I wonder how feasible it is to get this part of the fluid mechanics right, without the whole thing just crashing and burning or all janked up...
j79··on Why does Apple continue killing bitcoin apps?
Exactly.

If I ask my mom or dad about bitcoin, they won't think "decentralized crypto currency", but "isn't that what they used on that silkroad site I heard about on Fox News a while back??"
