j79··on I wanted to punish my daughter with a no-frills phone but it didn't go to plan
Half Korean.

I thought I figured out some amazing snack when I started eating ramen straight out of the pack. My brother and I would mix it with microwave popcorn (two unhealthy snacks cancel each other out, right?)

So it came as a shock when my cousin from Korea came to visit and wasn't impressed with our ramen snacks.

"Doesn't everyone do this?"

Turned out my Half-Korean friends were doing the same thing (we were all Army brats). They were equally surprised to find others doing it.

j79··on Families go deep in debt to maintain a middle-class lifestyle
You forgot to factor in UberEats, Disney trips, and other one off expenses that end up easily being $75+ a pop. Expenses that some people would budget for a week or two (or longer), people are easily spending on a single event. That hefty $4000 in your checking account quickly dwindles down to nothing because they spent $500 bucks over the weekend on multiple UberEats and a quick run to the mall.

Thanks for confirming.

j79··on Walmart announces next-day delivery, firing back at Amazon
I think the "crazy idea" also stems from the PRC regulating price increases. From a consumer viewpoint, it makes sense to regulate prices, but - again - from a consumer viewpoint, I'll agree that the USPS delivers a service for a VERY competitive price. And contrary to joering2's comment, they do an amazing job at it (considering the sheer volume).
j79··on Amazon must remove toxic school supplies, kids’ jewelry from US marketplace
I decided to do the same after I received a counterfeit (or altered) item from Amazon for a skincare product. I had grown suspicious of Amazon reviews and their practice of co-mingling items, but it suddenly occurred to me that buying something with the intention of applying it to my skin, without truly trusting the source, was probably not the smartest thing to do. I decided to switch to either ordering from trusted sources (Sephora, Target, etc) or physically visiting the store. One advantage of forcing myself to go out to a physical store is I'm way less inclined to splurge on an item, unless I truly need it. It's shocking how easy Amazon made that possible.
j79··on We Don't Have a Talent Shortage. We Have a Sucker Shortage
After moving to California in 2011, I decided I missed the office banter and started looking for a job. I found a listing on a large, tech-based recruiting firm (cybercoders) and the job was perfect for my skills. I applied but heard nothing back.

After a week I reached out to the recruiter, and she replied with a curt, "You're not qualified for this role so we're looking elsewhere." I was a bit surprised as the reqs they described in the job listing were exactly what I had been doing for the last 3 years. But it got me thinking whether the company (HR, Hiring Manager, etc) had made the decision or if the recruiter had?

In addition, there was no additional offer from the recruiter to work with me? It was literally that one line. It got me thinking that maybe my experience(s) wasn't valued by the recruiter as someone worth pursuing, as I may be more "work" to land a job than she would want to invest?

Anyway, with my pride slightly dinged, I immediately wrote off the recruiter (and cybercoders as a whole) as someone I wouldn't want to work with in the future. I got a job at a larger company and a few years later, enjoyed responding to the SAME recruiter asking if I was interested in some jobs she had to offer (nothing bridge-burning worthy, but it felt great saying "NO THANKS")

j79··on How to Improve MacBook Pro Performance and Thermals
OMG! You were not joking about the "felt" like appearance of the dust!

My MBP seems to always have the fans on. I do occasionally run compressed air across the vents (from the outside) but decided to open it up thanks to this thread.

As I was cleaning, I noticed that when blowing compressed air into the vents, one of the fans was not turning (indicating no air reaching?) I grabbed some precision tweezers and pulled this out: https://i.imgur.com/aIPSRdi.jpg

j79··on A Kid Spent 9 Years Building a Detailed Paper Model of a Boeing Jet (2017)
Oddly enough, my brain associated "Kid" and "9 Years" from the title and I assumed a young child built a detailed Boeing paper plane. A "9 year old kid" makes perfect sense to me.

I was slightly confused when the video began. (Both by the level of detail a 9 year old kid could achieve and then the age of the "kid"!)

j79··on Facebook Usage Declines for the First Time in Infinite Dial History
You are correct.

From their study, they show that while Facebook dropped, Instagram increased (34, 36, and 39% from 2017 - 2019, respectively).

WhatsApp doesn't have tracking data for 2017/18, but 2019 shows it at 18%.

j79··on Volvo is introducing a 112mph speed limiter to all its new cars
About a year ago, I was driving in the far right lane going 80MPH at 2AM in the morning. Wife and baby child were sleeping in the car. In my rear view, I see a car flying up. He was in an express lane. No clue why, but as he catches up, he cuts over the solid white line separating the express lane, then the far left lane, and finally passes me in the middle lane. This idiot was going about 130-140MPH. I was absolutely livid and the only thing that stopped me from chasing him down was my wife and son.

So stop with this b.s. I'd much rather drive on a road with someone drive slower than an asshole who thinks everyone is going to slow. People weaving through traffic, going 80, 90, 100MPH while everyone else is doing 65, are FAR more dangerous, than the elderly driver doing 60 in the far left.

Sure, the other two answers may be "outdated" but they're still extremely useful if you're looking to calling map/filter/etc against your queried elements.

j79··on Customer Service Agents Can See What You're Typing in Real Time
I'm a bit older and also remember this as well. I would watch in real time when my friends would type something out, or call out their mistakes in typing. I believe you're right about it being ICQ.
j79··on Letter from Tim Cook to Apple Investors
I'd love some "retro" devices.

An iPhone that's Slightly fatter (fill the space with a larger battery), headphone jack, and a "smaller" screen. Of course, have all of the latest hardware (camera, soc, etc.).

Or, a MacBook Pro, again slightly fatter (larger battery), with a great keyboard, actual ports (no dongles), and no touch bar. Give us the option for a matte screen to totally blow our socks off.

I'd buy those two devices tomorrow if Apple introduced them.

j79··on Amazon, Amid Crackdown on Seller Scams, Fires Employees Over Data Leak
> I just pay attention to the seller ratings and make sure they're better than 98%.

Maybe I'm just extremely cynical, but you don't feel those are somehow gamed? For parts that you've described, I've actually moved to eBay as my first stop.

j79··on VW says combustion cars will fade away after 2026
> Were not for the battery degradation ghost, people would be switching in droves already.

When you say people, are you referring to people who are in a position where they could buy an electric car, but have not yet?

I personally feel the vast majority of people have not switched because:

1) Cost

2) Options (we're a country that loves SUVs/Trucks)

3) Housing / Charging

Funny enough, I could probably afford an electric vehicle, but I have no way of charging that vehicle due to my housing situation.

j79··on When Zuckerberg Asserted Control, Instagram’s Founders Chafed
> timeline now filtered by algorithm and not sequentially

Yep. It annoyed me to no end to learn that I had missed a bunch of images posted by a friend because they were never surfaced to me. It turns out my rampant liking (it's super easy with the double-tapping) of someone who burst-post(s) suddenly made me seem like I was a "fan" of theirs. In reality, I just double-tap everything.

j79··on Apple Special Event [video]
The other day, I read on /r/apple that people were getting surveys regarding their iMac Pro purchases. There was speculation that maybe they were using the feedback for the next Mac Pro upgrade. It got me thinking that it's been THREE years since I personally bought an Apple product. I made me wish that I could personally provide feedback through a survey about why I haven't purchased a new Apple product recently (I'm assuming they have some history of my purchases?)

Since I switched from PCs to Macs, I've purchased (not in order):

PowerBook G3 (Pismo) - My first Apple device that started my love affair PowerBook G4 12" MacBook Pro 12" MacBook Pro 15" Power Mac G5 (with ACD) Mac Pro (with ACD) iPod (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th gen) iPod Mini (1st, 2nd, 3rd gen) iPod Shuffle (1st, 3nd, 4th gen) iPod Touch (forget which gen) iPhone (Original, 3G, 3GS, 4S, 5S, 6S) iPad (Original, iPad 2, iPad Mini, iPad Pro) Apple Watch (3) Apple TV (multiple)

And countless Apple products for family (three or four Mac Minis over the years for parents, iPhones, iPods, etc.)

It's a shame because NOTHING Apple offers is of interest to me. Like you said, I don't want a giant phablet (remember when Apple fans mocked those?? "But I can use my phone with one hand!" we all said mockingly)

I'm not even sure if they're listening to their "pro" customers when it comes to "pro" hardware (or if pro customers are even a demographic Apple wants to cater to?)

Unfortunately, I've started looking at non-Apple devices. (The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 is what I want in a laptop. I'm still not sold on any particular iPhone replacement, yet...) But, nearly 20 years of my life, I've called myself an Apple "fan". So it's tough. I don't know, maybe I'm just not the target demographic =\ I realize I'm just one person (who use to buy Apple products for six other people - all family), so my move from Mac -> PC wouldn't affect Apple's bottom line. But, I'd like to think that there are others out there like us, who are getting fed up with Apple of today.

Sorry for the long rant (that's slightly humblebrag-ish, I don't mean for it to be...)

j79··on Google AMP – A 70% drop in our conversion rate
In Mobile Safari, it's even worse as the bottom navigation bar is present when the page loads and then stays present.

Since AMP uses an overflow technique to handle content/scrolling, the page never triggers a scroll event on the body. So not only do you see a toolbar at the top (which admittedly, slides out when you scroll down), you see the browser toolbar at the bottom (which persists!)

My brother, who joined facebook during the whole Cambridge Analytica fiasco, said that he had "sold his soul for more money".
j79··on Reddit Security Incident
This is definitely more an edge case (and not really an intercept), but if the user has an iPhone with SMS forwarding set up (via iMessages), the "intercept" could occur by accessing the users iMessage account and waiting for the forwarded SMS to arrive.
j79··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
Honestly, the worst was DHL. I got so frustrated with them, I contacted Amazon's customer service and offered to pay extra to NOT have DHL deliver my items.

The agent offered her apologies and noted they couldn't offer that (did refund me delivery costs), but would note the preference. Not sure if that "note" actually did anything, however I started getting substantially less DHL deliveries, which was a plus.

These days, most problematic is Amazon's own deliverers. They tend to deliver the same day, but usually late in the day or to the wrong address.

USPS and UPS are the best, with UPS edging in delivery time. I've had two USPS packages marked "Delivered" but show up the next day. FedEx seems to miss delivery times a lot.

j79··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
Prime member for the last 8 years but I'm seriously considering canceling next year (mostly due to the price hike in Prime).

I've had plenty of items arrive late or not even at all, with stretches where I've had back-to-back-to-back issues with Amazon, so frustrating that I considered canceling Prime right then and there (~3 years ago).

A couple times they were delivered to our neighbors house next door (who dropped them off to us, thankfully) and a few times we had to contact Amazon Customer Service who just sent us a new one. In general, I trust Amazon to get me my item, but they're definitely not perfect and I wouldn't be surprised if OP isn't exaggerating...

BTW, I live in the Bay Area (and not out in the boonies).

j79··on Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon
> The delivery, unboxing, etc, was all free (prime)

"Free" in that it came with your Prime membership which you paid for ;)

j79··on eBay Is Conducting a 'Mass Layoff' in the Bay Area
Funny, as a buyer, I'm finding the same to be true of Amazon. There was a time where I would just trust Amazon to have the lowest prices and to have legitimate reviews. That time is long gone.

Anything higher than 4 stars is now taken with a grain of salt. I'm running every listing through fakespot.com and even then, I still have to research the reviews to verify the items are actually any good. I'm certain that I've decided against purchasing an item because the reviews looked too good. It just screams "FAKE!"

But the biggest issue (and headache/hassle) I have with Amazon reviews is the mixed reviews they lump together for different items. This just recently bit me in the ass when I totally missed that an item I purchased had a bunch of 1 star reviews, but was lumped together with a much more popular item boosting the item(s) to a 4 star review. That was a month ago, and I've refused to purchase from Amazon because the headache just isn't worth it. Amazon's customer service is great - but I'm tired of having to deal with them...

Factor in actual co-mingling of items (I've been the victim of this as well) and now I can't even trust that the item I ordered from Amazon is even real. As a seller, I hope you understand that as a buyer, I no longer have faith in the item you are selling actually being sold by you. At least with eBay, where there is no fulfillment, I'm working directly with the company.

j79··on Amazon’s share of the US e-commerce market is now 49%
I purchased Cariloha "Resort" sheets from their retail store in SF and love them. Everyone who has slept in our bed (Cariloha sheets + a Purple Mattress) all rave about the softness. Bought three more sets, all from their on-line website. Amazon sells them, but the color selection isn't as large as their own website.
j79··on Amazon’s share of the US e-commerce market is now 49%
> Sift through an onslaught of phony reviews and hope You get some working cheap crap? Nah.

A major reason I've stopped shopping Amazon are the reviews. It's crazy thinking that my on-line shopping changed from:

Researching for the best price (or searching for a coupon)

to

Researching if the reviews are actually "legit".

The last few products I purchased, where even "Fakespot" gave an "A" grade, the product was absolutely piss-poor in quality.

j79··on Facebook Makes Moves on Instagram Users

j79··on States Can Require Internet Tax Collection, Supreme Court Rules
Interesting. One thing I've noticed is that certain on-line sellers exempt purchases to certain states. I wonder how long before they start exempting residents of states that force online sales tax collection.
j79··on States Can Require Internet Tax Collection, Supreme Court Rules
> Now that smaller sellers (marketplace sellers, eBay, etc.) also have to collect tax, that hurts the ~8% discount built in, so why even shop around?

Because the more I learn about Amazon and their warehouse employees, the less I've been shopping on Amazon.

Having choice is a good thing.
