j2bax··on Amazon CEO reportedly told remote employees: It’s probably not going to work out
Almost as ironic as Zoom reversing their remote policies.
j2bax··on How to Do Great Work
Is there a problem if you don’t use the trademarked name Scrabble or any of their art? It’s my understanding that you can’t protect a game mechanic. Is that inaccurate?

I like your name! What is shacking?
j2bax··on Show HN: PFAS.report – Measure the forever chemicals in your blood via Quest

j2bax··on Missing Titanic sub faced lawsuit over depths it could safely travel to
I'm sure they never imagined this video being paired with an incident like this but wow, their joyful and excited reactions (with no context of the lead up to this experiment) feels really morbid/sick. I realize they were trying to prove a myth and it worked, but still found it unsettling.
j2bax··on Things I wish I’d known before fulltime RVing (2017)
Second this! We also found an added benefit of not going longer than the 22 footer (assuming a F150 with short bed towing) is that you can typically fit across two parking spots which opens up your options when you stop quite a lot.
j2bax··on Things I wish I’d known before fulltime RVing (2017)
I'm knocking on wood real hard with this one, but I'm going on about 20k miles in my 2013 Airstream with no incidents (bought in 2020). Only major thing I did since getting it was change the original tires and get the wheel bearings repacked. Cross country road trips was what led us to go with an Airstream and so far I haven't regret it a bit.
j2bax··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
The battery is for on the go usage. It also has a charger for “all day use” when you are stationary.
j2bax··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
There was one moment in the presentation when a guy at the office opened his Macbook Pro and the screen popped up above it much larger.
j2bax··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
I wonder if there are areas/towns that could use additional sources of revenue/jobs that larger cities could help subsidize with homeless relocation services and funding.
j2bax··on Microtiming in Metallica's “Master of Puppets” (2014)
Maybe your Berkeley grad metal practitioners like Dream Theater and probably a lot of metal in the last decade or two (since the internet and YouTube) but I imagine a lot of garage metal bands from the 70’s and 80’s were probably just playing/writing by feel and a loose understanding of music theory. I’m sure producers helped bring it all together on the album.
j2bax··on Apple previews Live Speech, Personal Voice, and more new accessibility features
Agreed, which is why Facebook was so devastated by opt in tracking…
j2bax··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
How about you elevator passengers up to a runway that is a thousand feet up in the air. Then use electric lines on the runway to power the takeoff to avoid using any onboard batteries until airborne. Just daydreaming here a bit!
j2bax··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
Well, you still can't trust everything, but voting mechanisms tend to help filter out some of the BS.
j2bax··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
I recently asked it to provide the meaning of a song. I gave it the artist and the song. It responded with a thoughtful(ish) explanation of the potential meaning of the song. I then asked it if it could share the lyrics of the song with me because some of the quotes it referenced weren't in the song. It provided lyrics that weren't the song I was asking about at all. I then asked what song it was, it apologized and it told me the artist and title of the song... I looked up that artist and title and it was also not the song that it provided the lyrics/meaning to. Ultimately, I determined that it just made up lyrics to a song. It was very apologetic.

j2bax··on Apple’s Best Hope for New Headset: a Smartwatch-Like Trajectory
All of their other wearables and phones are waterproof at this point, why wouldn't this one be? Rinse it off in the sink when you are done!
j2bax··on Apple’s Best Hope for New Headset: a Smartwatch-Like Trajectory
I could see major potential in the fitness space, paired with Apple Watch + Fitness+... I could see potential use cases in education (think surgery simulator etc...). I could see some developers using it as an alternative to their monitors. I think there are plenty of places outside of gaming where a device like this, done right (comfortable) could carve out a segment. Plenty of people pay thousands of dollars for an exercise bike with a screen attached to it.
j2bax··on Apple’s Best Hope for New Headset: a Smartwatch-Like Trajectory
Seems like a very subtle lightweight glasses type product would pair nicely with LLM.
j2bax··on Banks as collateral damage in a class war
Appreciate your thoughts on this. Most people in your situation are like the poster you responded to... "I didn't go into debt." Or "I got myself out of debt, anyone can do it..." Unfortunately, that mindset will only continue this spiral we are in where the less thans look down on the more less thans. One health/medical scenario or another could change any of our financial fate tomorrow. Just because we are currently in the no debt, healthy category, there are no guarantees that's where we will stay.

I'm sure there are more than enough people that carelessly got themselves into debt... They bought into the consumerist world we live in. It's hard to resist. But there are also many that are stuck in generational economic turmoil, that don't have the tools to dig themselves out.

j2bax··on ChatGPT is rendering other people's chat history in the sidebar
As an AI language model, I do not have access to specific information about ChatGPT's codebase or the details of the issue you mentioned. However, based on my knowledge of software development, there are a few potential causes and fixes for such an issue:

Software bug: It's possible that the issue was caused by a bug in ChatGPT's code. One potential fix would be to identify and fix the bug to prevent it from happening again in the future.

Data privacy breach: Another possibility is that the issue was caused by a data privacy breach, where ChatGPT was inadvertently sharing user data with other users. In this case, a fix would involve identifying the cause of the breach and implementing additional security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Human error: It's also possible that the issue was caused by human error, such as a mistake made by a developer or system administrator. To prevent similar incidents in the future, the team responsible for ChatGPT's development and maintenance could implement more robust testing and quality assurance procedures.

Regardless of the cause, it's important for the team responsible for ChatGPT's development and maintenance to investigate the issue thoroughly and implement appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. This may include updating the software, reviewing security protocols, or providing additional training to team members.

j2bax··on Meta is building a decentralized, text-based social network
It would be nice if at a minimum we could demand a social network that caters to making meaningful connection points with friends/family/strangers rather than ad serving algos. I know... the people have spoken and they want free stuff and are willing to sell their data/soul for it. I just wish it wasn't so! If a company built a product that was primarily designed to make me love it and find it valuable enough to pay for it I would be all in. But if the rest of my friends/family aren't in... then its pretty meaningless. I'll just have to keep relying on more manual methods of social media like texting, calls etc.

j2bax··on ‘Excuuuuse me, Princess ’: An oral history of The Legend of Zelda cartoon

j2bax··on Stranger Things and the Amiga 1000
I was born in ‘83 and I think they’ve done a great job building a fantasized version of what the 80’s was or could have been. They’ve recreated a lot of tropes from movies they probably grew up watching.
j2bax··on AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues
For me the AirPods Pro are one of my most loved and used pieces of tech in recent memory. Assume OP uses iPhone and there are a handful of unique features AirPods offer when paired with iPhone that I assume Samsung pods would not. Things like syncing across devices via iCloud account… spatial audio… IOS integrated noise canceling control. And for me the fit and sound is fantastic.
j2bax··on Too many Americans live in places built for cars – not for human connection
I think more universal rural challenges for people that are from more populated areas are... difficulty breaking into the community as an outsider. Lack of medical services. Lack of restaurants. Lack of services in general. I lived in some fairly populated suburbs for a decade or so before moving back to where I grew up in a fairly rural small town and the adjustment has been fairly difficult. Haven't really had any issues with any ATV's or shotguns in the middle of the night... I mean I'm sure it has happened but its not such a recurring issue that I'm losing sleep over it. We aren't too far from a fairly popular snowmobile route but I rather like the occasional whine while I'm cozy in bed!
j2bax··on Ask HN: Which startups are thriving in the downturn?
I think OP was referring to major new verticals... Video game vertical is 40+ years old now. Sure still lots of innovation happening within the vertical, but anything that is going to change the trajectory of humanity?
j2bax··on Instagram can track anything you do on any website in their in-app browser
Why don't you just make sure there are no unsavory links on whatever page you are using the in-app browser for and disable/hide the address bar so they can't just jump onto the open web? Seems like you can have your cake and eat it!
j2bax··on Carbon dioxide now more than 50% higher than pre-industrial levels
Yes, the only reason for my comment was that you gave multiple examples where you and family members and historical groups made a big deal out of something and it turned out it didn't have any significant impact on their lives. There are probably few rural folks who wouldn't experience significant life altering consequences of losing their personal transportation autonomy.
