ix101··on The smelly baby problem
It's easier because your child is like an extension of yourself. I think changing your own kid's diaper is a walk in the park unless there's a big mess!
ix101··on Show HN: CIA World Factbook Archive (1990–2025), searchable and exportable
Hi, thanks for this! Not sure if you're aware that clicking Australia goes to American Samoa, similar issue with some others that I encountered (Bahamas -> Burkina faso).

ix101··on An opinionated critique of Duolingo
https://www.languagereactor.com is something similar to Yabla I think... But you can use it indefinitely and subscribe if you need the premium features.
ix101··on Spaced repetition systems have gotten better
I would argue that it's harder for me to decide how easily I recalled a word and decide between a few loosely defined levels as to which one I should choose than to apply a simple algorithm.

If the window loses focus it would be able to pause automatically. If you are distracted another way, no big deal you will see that word again soon and unlikely to keep getting distracted on the same word. The benefits would outweigh the odd misfire.

ix101··on Spaced repetition systems have gotten way better
It's surprising how much easier to translate a foreign when it's given in a sentence. Also helps when there are multiple translations for a word depending on context.
ix101··on Spaced repetition systems have gotten way better
This looks like a fun app!
ix101··on Spaced repetition systems have gotten way better
One way it could grade you automatically is by the speed of flipping the card (or entering the correct answer). If it took less than a second to confirm then evidently it was easy.
ix101··on Launch HN: Miyagi (YC W25) turns YouTube videos into online, interactive courses
Amazing approach! Is learning a second language too different from the types of courses Miyagi was designed for, or do you see a potential for that category?

ix101··on An end to all this prostate trouble?
I think OP was alluding to the fact that risks of complications with pregnancy increases with age.
ix101··on Show HN: I send myself automated emails to practice Dutch
Using speech to text you could say the answer and it could validate your answer. If AI engine is powerful enough it could have you say the foreign word and rate your pronunciation.

As for spaced repetition I developed an alternative which just has a column for number of times correct answer was given and order by descending order on that field. This gives you new words first followed by words you've barely gotten correct etc

ix101··on Show HN: I send myself automated emails to practice Dutch
You could use the data you've collected in the DB to generate a quiz that tests your knowledge of the words. If you track how many times you entered the correct answer and sort by descending order on that field you will be presented with the least known words first. Easy alternative to spaced repetition.
ix101··on Merry Christmas Everyone
That second sentence was absolutely not what the first sentence led me to believe what was coming!
ix101··on Waymo achieves 92% reduction in bodily injury claims compared to human drivers
Highways seem like they're safer than other roads but if we had fully autonomous highways I imagine speed limits could be effectively removed drastically reducing travel time.
ix101··on Mysterious tablet with unknown language unearthed in Georgia
I'm curious how people pronounce this when they've never heard it. Do people assume the 'e' is silent as in "eye". For anyone curious it's basically "Turkey-yeah" & the "yeah" is short.
ix101··on Sanding UI
One I've experienced on GitHub and Jira is dragging to select text on a dialog, if you release outside the dialog the mouse up event dismisses the pop up which is probably a side effect of being able to click outside the dialog to dismiss it.
ix101··on You've got to hide your myopia away: John Lennon's contact lenses
Next day at work.. "hey Joe why are you squinting the whole time?" "Ah that... Well, thing is my glasses are so smudged, but I don't wanna forget how they got that way ;)" "Ah! Say no more."
ix101··on Becoming an Amateur Polyglot
Are there any apps specifically targetted at polyglots? It's a niche so I doubt it. I guess you can tell the app that you're native french speaker learning German if you are more proficient in French and picking up German. This way you are training two languages simultaneously.
ix101··on Becoming an Amateur Polyglot
On the subject of tenses Turkish has a "reported past tense" which I haven't heard in other languages so far. It's very commonly used and simply denotes that someone told you of something that happened. I.e. you didn't witness / weren't present.
ix101··on Becoming an Amateur Polyglot
The limitation with flashcards is that you get the entire answer, not sure if there are flashcard apps with a hint function? I experimented with vocab training where you can peek the first two letters which helps jog the memory.
ix101··on Housing wealth is meaningless, destructive and fundamentally changing society
If you require an English-speaking country with with a warm climate, and stable infrastructure, you have barely any other options. Bear in mind foreign languages are not a strongpoint of the Aussie education system.
ix101··on Housing wealth is meaningless, destructive and fundamentally changing society
> Australia is only habitable at scale along the coast Actually with the 8th biggest coastline in the world, we could probably double the population without going very far in-land.

> So at what point does anyone get to keep the money?! When it's inherited. No doubt inheriting a large sum helps people trade up to a better property, and park a new range rover out front.

Still seems to be most popular in France, doesn't appear to be dying off there... Interestingly it's gaining popularity. Curious why that would be.

I hope for her sake they're not long names... The number of issues I've had due to too given names being too long has been quite frustrating. E.g. banking systems that can't fit my full name into their systems.
