ivank··on Google Credential Provider for Windows
I think I have one super admin and four regular users, but everyone is disabled.
ivank··on Google Credential Provider for Windows
Yes, this is happening to me right now on my G Suite: https://twitter.com/ivankozik/status/1254988039467614209 - no warning and no spam on my part. Every account is disabled, all incoming emails bounce, messages to my Google Voice number are /dev/nulled, my YouTube channel does not exist. Requesting account review as the super admin results in the same "please contact another administrator" autoresponse...
ivank··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours?
Based on my observations and the details that Marco has blogged about, it seems to use a silence-detection algorithm that rapidly adjusts playback speed, so the silences are not cut out in a jarring manner, but rather played through at a typical 2.5-4x.
ivank··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours?
Overcast says its Smart Speed feature has saved me 30 hours (over the last ~5 months), so I expect it to save me 100 hours within a year. It is especially useful for podcasts and language learning material with a lot of pauses, but I have become used to it, and so I now keep it enabled for most audiobooks that I load into Overcast just to get the dynamic playback speed.

blocking/masking noise at safe volume levels is very much possible with in-ear monitors and Comply Isolation tips
ivank··on Xfce 4.14
I've been using Xfce on hidpi since 2015 with just font scaling (using the DPI setting in xfce4 settings/Xorg), and it has worked fine, other than the minor issue of unscaled icons in the Window Buttons panel.

Not loading here but http://web.archive.org/web/20190220061538/https://www.pointc...

If anyone wants to block outside noise without noise-cancelling algorithms: try in-ear monitors and replace the tips with foam tips designed for isolation (perhaps in a larger size for more sound blocking) - you effectively get a combination earplug/headphone.

Discord is blocked in China, and a large number of people in China are not willing to use VPNs.

Discord uses themes that do not meet minimum contrast guidelines (#747F8D on #FFFFFF is 4.06:1, failing WCAG AA for normal text).

Discord says third-party clients[1] and even client-side CSS modifications violate their ToS https://twitter.com/discordapp/status/983359562458849280

ivank··on WireGuard for iOS
I am using WireGuard for iOS and already vastly prefer it over OpenVPN Connect: WireGuard stays connected and doesn't exhibit OpenVPN's unreliable reconnect-on-unlock behavior. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Bill Gates doesn't seem to care that that science behind the project is terrible. It must have been pointed out to him, yet he was still promoting the project in 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ovf8GYfNbw&t=40s

ivank··on Scream – virtual network sound card for Windows
The downside is having to pay hundreds of dollars for an EV code signing cert just to submit a driver to Microsoft for Microsoft to sign.

I use it to send audio from my Windows QEMU VM (running on its dedicated GPU) to the Linux host for playback.
ivank··on Ask HN: What is the most unethical thing you've done as a programmer?
I don't think that particular feature made it onto the record, but Garret's confession rings true because AT&T did have a lot of capacity problems for a few years after the iPhone launch, especially in New York and San Francisco. I can find a lot of articles from 2009 mentioning dropped calls.

ivank··on Ask HN: Are there any purely keyword-based search engines with no NLP?
This only finds things that are in some kind of RSS or Atom feed, but inoreader (with a Professional account) can keyword-search every public article that they have in their index. It doesn't return results quickly, and there is often blogspam, but it does find interesting things as well. A screenshot of the search options: https://i.imgur.com/fIzl2cp.png
ivank··on AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and 1950X CPUs Announced
Would you buy a pile of Ryzen CPUs under the assumption that AMD will be able to fix it properly with an update (without e.g. disabling HT or making performance worse as they did for their TLB fix in 2007)? If they take another 2 months, you're out on your return window.
ivank··on AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and 1950X CPUs Announced
Compare what you can get today: an Intel CPU without a hyperthreading problem (fixed in a microcode update months back) or an AMD CPU with a hyperthreading problem (being investigated by AMD for 3 months).

Edit: thanks, s/unacknowledged/being investigated/

ivank··on Apple’s new APFS file system
Eh, I've seen an Intel SSD 320 eat a bunch of pages and an HGST 5K4000 4TB direct thousands of writes to the wrong sectors. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with storage devices, not just the optimistic case of a bit getting flipped after being written correctly.
ivank··on Apple’s new APFS file system
ZFS can tell you which files are corrupt, and you can then manually restore those files from an offline backup. No online device redundancy required.
ivank··on Signal-cli: command-line and dbus interface to Signal
I don't think you ever need it again, but if someone else later owns the number, they could register it with Signal and you would no longer be able to send or receive Signal messages.
ivank··on “We have decided to disable IMDb's message boards”
On the low-volume boards for not-so-popular movies, I've found some of the posts incredibly valuable, and all of that is now going to be out of the reach of search engines.
