ivank··on A religious sect landed Google in a lawsuit
https://youtu.be/FghSUttp6Lc&t=10m35s says: a compatible pitch followed by a gradual resocialization process.
ivank··on Use fzf for tmux session switching

    rpick() {
        session=$(for i in $(tmux list-sessions -F '#S'); do
            echo -e -n "$i\t"; { { tmux capture-pane -p -t "$i" | tr '\n' ' '; } || true; }
            echo
        done | fzf --exact --reverse | cut -f 1)
        if [[ "$session" != "" ]]; then
            tmux attach -t "$session"
        fi
    }
ivank··on Stripe responds to the Financial Connections/Plaid kerfuffle
I use that feature, but it’s effectively broken with the 1000 character restriction.

ivank··on PSA: Get Computer Glasses
You don't really need an optometrist to do the computer prescription. Just take the regular prescription and add to SPH (sphere) on both eyes, following the diopter formula for the distance you want for infinity, e.g. +1 SPH for 1 meter or +1.25 SPH for 0.8 meters. I put orders into Zenni and wait a few weeks.
ivank··on Ask HN: Why do my online accounts keep getting banned?
If your IPv4 is shared, it might be because of the other users doing bad things on the same IP.

If you have a compromised device on your network, it might be being used as a proxy to attempt logins, or for other uses as a "residential proxy": https://datadome.co/bot-detection/how-proxy-providers-get-re...

ivank··on Chris Lattner left Swift core team

ivank··on Ask HN: Recommend a biography?
The Wright Brothers by David McCullough
ivank··on Ian Cutress leaves Anandtech
He has an entire video about cleaning keyboards that consists of putting them in the dishwasher as a whole, PCB included. There’s no way that’s ever a good idea because of corrosion.
ivank··on Lessons Learned after $5B of M&A
It seems to go away after a reload.
ivank··on Google Search Is Dying
https://camas.github.io/reddit-search/ will sometimes find things that neither Google nor Reddit search can dig up (it queries pushshift and includes recent and deleted comments). It doesn't have any relevance ranking but it's still possible to get interesting results; also, it supports asterisk suffixes on words.
ivank··on Why Musk’s biggest space gamble is freaking out his competitors
Jim Cantrell says it is true in https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-that-Elon-Musk-was-spat-on-...
ivank··on Tell HN: Want to see Google fail? Try to find how to create a torrent on iPhone
PhotoSync is how to transfer photos to a computer without using a cable
ivank··on AirPods don't “just work”
If you have an IEM with a sturdy cable wrapped around your ear, snagging it on a door handle yanks the connector out of the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter instead.
ivank··on Ask HN: Is the past disappearing on the web?
Not sure if this is OP's case, but YouTube has the rare video with no metadata visible whatsoever (tested web):

ivank··on Help me add dark mode in Hacker News natively
It's a Safari extension.
ivank··on Help me add dark mode in Hacker News natively
Dark Reader is available for iOS in the app store.
ivank··on Ask HN: How the $ ^ do I learn web?
If you can mentally process a lot of opinions like a Bayesian: Hacker News search with Algolia, e.g. with more than one framework in the query. Twitter search. Reddit search (via https://camas.github.io/reddit-search/).

GitHub issues to see what kind of problems people are having and whether they're really showstoppers. Are they things that can be fixed, or do they reveal more-serious design problems in the software?

Comparative code review in your IDE.

Comparative review of documentation.

GitHub search to find big projects that use those dependencies and seeing whether you like the results.

ivank··on Staggering stat: 87% of U.S. teenagers have iPhones
The Safari crashes can sometimes be fixed by rebooting the phone. Otherwise they happen much less frequently on an iPhone with at least 3GB RAM (7 has 2GB).

The autocorrect can be fixed by using Gboard instead. I don't know why Apple can't make their iPhone keyboard work right.

ivank··on Ask HN: Itchy eyes, any ideas / suggestions?
Are they still itchy after not looking at screens (or room LED lighting) with Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) for several days? That might be worth looking into as they cause dry eyes for some people.
ivank··on Databases in 2021: A Year in Review
I use https://github.com/xocolatl/periods for this to some success.

ivank··on Incorrectly deleted from Facebook? Getting back on might take connections
It's probably because you had no activity. Someone may have run out of ideas for deleting bot accounts and wrote a query that caught idle accounts with no posts.
ivank··on Ask HN: What things has tech made worse in your life?
We could try to make competitive web services that are not funded by advertising.
ivank··on I host this blog from my garage

ivank··on Fixing the Logitech MX Ergo Trackball Mouse Buttons
Without any soldering equipment to replace the entire switch, click/hold issues on mice can still be fixed: one can open up the Omron switch and replace just the spring, using a donor spring from a new switch or some unused mouse lying around. https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/29955/how-do...
ivank··on Apple broke up with me
A similar case was posted yesterday, though it involved adding gift cards: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29437627
