ivanjermakov··on Dear Software Makers
Original youtube is there, it's called subscriptions tab. A curated list of high-quality content creators accumulated for over a decade.

Youtube certainly took a lot of unpopular decisions lately, but being able to stream any hi-res video ever posted in an instant and for "free" is a miracle. I will be happy with youtube for as long as content creators I care about are happy and I can get their fresh content via browser, yt-dlp, or other means.

ivanjermakov··on Show HN: Dental Scope – Interactive 3D dental anatomy
According to commit history, built in 3 days.
ivanjermakov··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
> googled

Could've been a trip to a local library!

ivanjermakov··on Plan mode is dead
Yes, plan mode is still a reasonable way to guide agents _before_ any code is written. They're so eager toshamelessly change the files even after a simple quesiton.

But nothing is stopping us from prompting agent to only write to plan.md this session.

ivanjermakov··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
So they ran out of information on the internet...
ivanjermakov··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
> otherwise you can't react

I'm far from neuroscience, but humans don't need to operate at 20Hz to drive a car. And human reaction latency (event to measurable action) is often over 1s (under 1Hz).

ivanjermakov··on English: A vs. An
In Russian it's quite common too. Car can be feminine (машина), masculine (авто/автомобиль), and neuter (транспортное средство).

And different car brands usually have their own gender too: for example Mercedes is usually masculine even though named after founder's daughter, and Honda is isually feminine.

ivanjermakov··on English: A vs. An
> nobody ever makes grammar errors related to gender

For most words, yes. Some loanwords are tricky to gender because of their declension. For example gender of "coffee" in russian is highly disputed: https://www.reddit.com/r/russian/comments/h08q29/the_insiste...

ivanjermakov··on What Zig felt like, coming from Rust
"Having a blog is cool these days"
ivanjermakov··on Why building a Rust LSP is hard
LSP is not that bad. They tried to decouple IDE features from language features.

Resolving file paths is not trivial because it's language specific.

Syncing source changes on the LSP server side is necessary to keep packet side small and patching is trivial (span, new text).

(I made an LSP-powered text editor and implemented LSP client from scratch)

ivanjermakov··on Show HN: Rickub – The Smartest Git in the Universe
I'm not using proprietary git hosting again.
ivanjermakov··on Show HN: Share your AI Setup, Learn from others
"Industry standard"
ivanjermakov··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
> but I haven't seen anything like this before

Just a bunch of controversial ideas: structured programming, null, intellisense, microservices, cloud first, serverless, OOP, "Clean Code", exceptions, SaaS.

ivanjermakov··on Backups Aren't Simple
Same! I decided to reinstall Windows and MBR to GPT conversion (surprisingly!) wiped the whole disk. 10 years of family photos gone. Good thing we had all important ones printed.
ivanjermakov··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
WGPU/Vulkan don't work with PTX shaders by default, additional translation would be needed.

On a side note, Vulkan has extension to launch CUDA kernels: https://docs.vulkan.org/refpages/latest/refpages/source/VK_N...

ivanjermakov··on Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month
Might be one of the only use cases where LLMs are necessary to succeed. Can't imagine the pain of reverse engineering a technology of this scale and "secrecy".
ivanjermakov··on Over 12% of links posted to Hacker News are Show HN projects now
I see Zig news quite often here. The rest - not so much.
ivanjermakov··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
That's my point, diligent use of AI is indistinguishable. And because of bad rep we will see any bad code called out "AI slop".
ivanjermakov··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
It's not about who wrote the code, rather who made decisions.
ivanjermakov··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
> I'm not sure what to do with the information

Get inspired and spend a rest of your life looking for new 3bp solutions.

ivanjermakov··on Show HN: Pushie – Get notified with a simple webhook
I solved this by writing a trivial Node http server Telegram bot that accepts messages on root endpoint and sends them as bot messages. 100LOC.

Of course the difference is that it's not SaaS and you have to host it somewhere.

ivanjermakov··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
$702 more is relative and tells nothing without the basis. It's 61% increase in 5 years.
ivanjermakov··on GPT-6 Astra
Make cool stuff because the process is fun and makes you learn?
ivanjermakov··on Any Human Ever – One life, drawn at random from all who have ever lived
Worst part is that it's often not clear at the first glance was it something carefully crafted or steamrolled by LLM.
ivanjermakov··on Nobody Has Actually Built a Software Factory
It's an economical miracle too. Rare case where producing one sellable product is identical in costs to producing millions.

And international distributuon and scaling is simple too, compared to physical goods.

ivanjermakov··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
Should be easy to purchase a 2.4GHz jammer, about as easy as to get in trouble for using it though.
ivanjermakov··on RavynOS: Pre-alpha open-source OS based on Darwin, FreeBSD, Apple open-source
Imagine the world where open-source is collaborating instead of fragmenting. Single Linux distribution, single compartibility layer for other OSes, single graphics API, single package manager...
ivanjermakov··on “I just chose words carefully”
No mention of Tom7's "Badness 0" by the author is the a crime!
ivanjermakov··on Zig: Pointer Stability for ArrayLists
Debug allocator can't catch it because it's not an allocation bug. Debug allocator finds bugs by marking memory during alloc/free and inspects them upon deinit. Pointer to a memory location change is not something allocator has control over. Possible solutions: smart array list implementation (this article), move semantic analysis (Rust's borrow checker), runtime introspection (https://fil-c.org/).
