ivanjermakov··on Zig: Pointer Stability for ArrayLists
I count this as a "rookie at system programming" mistake alongside returning a reference to a local variable. Rust is great at this because borrow checker can catch those at compile time and it can _teach_ devs to not do that.
ivanjermakov··on Creepy Crawlies
Some kind of proof of stake might be viable. "I as a visitor stake 1 cent that I'm a genuine user and not a sloppy bot, server is free to withdraw my stake if it's not true". If works, withdrawn money can be used to cover hosting costs.
ivanjermakov··on Creepy Crawlies
There has to be some not-yet-discovered way to have a capcha that is easy for any human but impossible for robot. Too bad capchas hurt user experience no matter how easy they are.

Another solution I came up with while reading HN comments: whitelist IPs instead blacklisting. Give access to well-behaving hosts/groups. It can even be shared across different sites. Although this would create a market for selling "good IP" proxies.

ivanjermakov··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Three levels of GUI workflow operation: touchpad < mouse < keyboard. This is the main reason people fall in love with programs like vim: with enough experience it allows one to completely eliminate interface friction.
ivanjermakov··on Get your Windows license refund
Nobody complaints that MS laptops ship with Windows - this is about hardware companies partnering with MS.
ivanjermakov··on Bun 1.4
Standard library is up to the TC39 committee, not a VC-funded all-in-one JS runtime owned by Anthropic.
ivanjermakov··on AliExpress runs silent WebAudio fingerprinting that breaks Bluetooth multipoint
You'd be surprised on what general public can go to save $5.
ivanjermakov··on AliExpress runs silent WebAudio fingerprinting that breaks Bluetooth multipoint
Not sure if they still do, but a couple years ago prices in the app were lower than on the website. And they promoted installing it to save money.
ivanjermakov··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
Personal computing has been in a sad state for a while now. Only "PC enthusiasts" were gamers. Rest of the population uses their phone 18hrs a day and seldomly use PC for Excel tasks at work.
ivanjermakov··on Splitting a Git Commit
StackOverflow is really not great at handling questions for which the right answer changes over time. I guess it doesn't matter since SO is dead anyway: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46482345
ivanjermakov··on Buy Your Friends Batteries
> keep essential devices running when the power goes out

I guess it's very location-specific, but I haven't had a power outage longer than 1 minute in the past 5 years.

ivanjermakov··on Incident with Github.com
GitHub is a git server as a service.
ivanjermakov··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
PSA: git repo can be hosted without a "provider" and any ssh address is a valid origin url: https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-on-the-Server-Setting-Up-...

ivanjermakov··on Incident with Github.com
I have a habit of reading the source code via github web interface instead of cloning and reading it in a much more comfy text editor.

Today I was forced to clone one because of "the incident". Which is a good thing.

ivanjermakov··on Every Fucking Website (2020)

ivanjermakov··on LinkedIn Feed Blocker
Twitter/X pioneered the space of "I'd rather close the tab".
ivanjermakov··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
Yep, LLMs excel here because most of the time analogous solution is already in the codebase. Most of my initial promtps include "look how it's done in X and do the same".
ivanjermakov··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
I'm yet to work on an enterprise project where programming is beyond simple validation, simple SQL, simple sheduling, simple mapping, simple error handling. Might be more about web backend than the whole field, but the challenge always comes from formulating requirements in a rigid form with all edge cases considered.

This might be the reason why many personal projects are so technical and impressive - it's the itch that's not scratched at work.

ivanjermakov··on A year of fighting scrapers on my 1.5 million-page website
Pay to change logo??? Just fork Anubis and remove one div... It's not SaaS first software, you're expected to deploy it on your web server.
ivanjermakov··on Devtools must be open source
I think it's pretty common in software companies to maintain own custom fork of an open-source tool/library.
ivanjermakov··on How do you rewrite C/C++ projects to Rust?
Remembering times when JetBrains was about carefully crafted Java intellisense. And I don't think demand for such tools is gone.
ivanjermakov··on Tailscale didn't stop the Hugging Face intrusion
Not exactly what you're asking, but they have a way to test their ACL policies: https://tailscale.com/docs/reference/syntax/policy-file#test...
ivanjermakov··on Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption
I'm surprised installing native software is still commonplace. At least in a world of gaming and professional software it's coming from reputable source, but when it comes to PC enthusiasts we've been walking on thin ice for a long time.

I also believe this is the main reason why web took off: effortless distribution and sandboxing.

ivanjermakov··on Elevators
I don't think it was mentioned, but the algorithm would be different based on the behavior of the majority. In some buildings most traffic is either up from lobby or down to lobby, e.g. it's very rare for people to go from floor 5 to floor 6. In some it's the other way around, where majority of moves don't involve lobby.
ivanjermakov··on Elevators
Elevator algorithm I'm used to always goes up from lobby and always goes down from any other floor. Meaning that it goes all the way to the highest order and picks orders top-down until reaching lobby. Only exception is going to underground parking floors which is relatively rare in my housing complex.

ivanjermakov··on JEP 401: Value Objects (Preview) merged to OpenJDK master
> Generic types such as List<T> and Comparable<T> can be instantiated with value classes as the type arguments.

> JEP 218, Generics over Primitive Types (with revisions), will allow generic classes and methods to specialize field, array, and local variable layouts when parameterized by value class types.

Ok now this is cool! JVM needs more ways to use compile time known value sizes for better memory allocation and optimizations.

GitHub needs to make it easier to see vibeware. At least Claude Code adds itself as a commit co-author and it's being shown as a collaborator.
