ivanche··on No, You Aren’t Going to Get Rich by Options Trading
What would be the use case that is not already covered with thousands of existing ETFs that track thousands of existing indices?
ivanche··on No, You Aren’t Going to Get Rich by Options Trading
Definitely! If one doesn't know at least 4 greeks (delta, theta, gamma and vega), what is volatility crush, what are credit and debit spreads, one doesn't have any business in option trading, let alone in trading weekly options or earnings.
ivanche··on [dead]
Because that's how it works? master is the main branch, origin is a remote computer that holds a copy of your repository (which you don't have to use, git works fine locally if you don't need to share your work with others), HEAD is just pointer to the commit you're at currently.
ivanche··on Why Does Nobody Want to Learn Java in 2022?
That is very broad generalization. I have a habit of never writing them unless I'm forced to do it.
ivanche··on Why Does Nobody Want to Learn Java in 2022?
Exactly! And the solution is don't write getters and setters unless you are absolutely forced to do so, and even then only for the minimum amount of fields.
ivanche··on Graphviz 7
As soon as: a) you precisely define "very different" AND b) versions 464 and 465 of Firefox and Chrome are available, we can continue discussing :)
ivanche··on Ad blocking is under attack (2017)
I am sorry, was it you that wrote "I don't think they were saying there was a legal agreement, just a moral and social one. It's like taking all the eggs from an honesty box outside someone's house - you didn't sign anything saying you wouldn't, but it's pretty clear you're in the wrong."? If that’s not putting moral and social burden onto tracking blockers, I don’t know what is.
ivanche··on Ad blocking is under attack (2017)
It’s interesting that moral and social burden is somehow put onto people that don’t want to be tracked/shadow profiled/spied on, and NOT on the companies that do tracking/spying.
ivanche··on From zero to 10M lines of Kotlin
No compiler there so the compiler can't tell you the type. No IDE there so the IDE can't tell you the type. You're at the mercy of colleague(s) not to write code like var request = service.call() or, worse, var b = getResult().
ivanche··on Graphviz 7
A bit unfair, no? Firefox switched to the "new major version every 6 weeks (or so)" only because Google did that first with Chrome, and people started thinking "Chrome is so much better because it's in version 17 and Firefox is version 3".
ivanche··on From zero to 10M lines of Kotlin
Now do the code review in GitHub. Ooops!
ivanche··on Sound
It even has a different explanation text how to use keyboard (2nd paragraph), depending on whether you open a site from a desktop or mobile! Impressive!
ivanche··on Dear JetBrains, Don't mess with your UI
Not OP but that's the first thing I try to turn off in any editor/IDE/terminal.
ivanche··on “You meant to install ripgrep”
I love HN because of this :) Thank you so much for making ripgrep! You made people's lives easier.
ivanche··on Show HN: Carefulwords.com, a more inspiring thesaurus
I must be missing something here. https://carefulwords.com/fast gives back 349 results, starting with "Barmecidal feast, Encratism, Friday, Lenten diet, Lenten entertainment, Lenten fare, Pythagoreanism, Pythagorism, Rechabitism, Sabbath, Shakerism, Spartan fare, Stoicism, Sunday" and also containing "ecclesiastical calendar, extravagant, firm as Gibraltar, hell for leather, hell-bent, promiscuous" and many many others which, I believe, are nowhere near being synonimous with "fast".
ivanche··on Take Advantage of Git Rebase
That is 100% correct and I agree. Actually, I always try to make a PR as a series of small, self-contained commits. I just wanted to point out the, IME, strong correlation between people that leave a bunch of "small fix" commits and them not using squash/rebase but "normal" merge.
ivanche··on Ask HN: Moving to HFT as web/Java developer?
Peter Lawrey is the man you're looking for.

His twitter https://twitter.com/PeterLawrey

His website https://blog.vanillajava.blog/

ivanche··on Take Advantage of Git Rebase
I much prefer to see one squashed commit over an endless stream of "fix typo", "small fix", "fixup", "forgot XYZ"...
ivanche··on Picnic loves Error Prone: producing high-quality and consistent Java code
Automatic rewriting of Java code based on rules looks quite interesting and promising.
ivanche··on The Reason Java Is Still Popular
I know it's a 3rd-party tool, but maybe JBang[0] can help you?

ivanche··on The Reason Java Is Still Popular
Don't forget that new release of Java is coming out every 6 months and that (almost) every one of them brings some core language improvement aimed at reducing verbosity. New long-term release is out every 2 years. How many C releases were there in the last 10 years?
ivanche··on Responding to recruiter emails with GPT-3
Next step: your hologram to work instead of you :)
ivanche··on Overrun by influencers, historic sites are banning TikTok creators in Nepal
Another old man's rant - if you need to broadcast you're enjoying, you're not really enjoying.
ivanche··on The productivity tax you pay for context switching
> I truly don't understand why developers put up with the stupidly slow compile times other than having no choice

My money is on the fact that execution speed of a program written in compiled language will run circles around equivalent program in an interpreted language.

ivanche··on Spaced repetition can allow for infinite recall
Unfortunately it couldn’t, at least not 100%. Spaced repetition works only if you have already learned the material.
ivanche··on The Story of Mel (1983)
Wow this is a blast from the past! First time I’ve read this was in a (paper) magazine some 25 years ago, one of the journalists was kind enough to translate it. The story was like a magnet to me as a high-school freshman, I must have reread it 20-30 times in the following weeks.
ivanche··on Ask HN: Do newsletters work? Why do websites push them so much?
I would be seriously tempted to call them and then saying "Howdy, I want to talk about kickstarting my inspiration."
ivanche··on TikTok and the Fall of the Social-Media Giants
Not every one, and maybe not even majority, of our actions can be "engaging" and "motivated". When you finish the school and start working, don't expect that all work will be engaging or that someone exists in the company to motivate you. Probably nobody is engaged while doing grocery shopping or running errands. Deep work? It is _not_ fun, trust me, but often very rewarding _in the end_.
ivanche··on Helium has revenues of $6.5k/month after $365M investment from A16Z
"On average, they spent $400-800 to buy a hotspot. They were expecting $100/month,". These expectations were soooo unrealistic! To have 100% return every 8 months is beyond crazy.
ivanche··on Show HN: GitHop
Probably it can be found by using GitHop addon for Firefox.
