itwillnotbeasy··on ZEC drops 30% after Anthropic AI finds Zcash counterfeit vulnerability
This vulnerability existed for ~4 years in a multi-billion-dollar protocol, overlooked by multiple in-depth security audits, only to be found by an Opus 4.8 agent a day after the model's public release. Opus 4.7 also failed to find it on its own without being specifically directed.

Taylor Hornby's own write-up is quite an interesting read: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SVK41y-ip3Vw9eB69E9QRy-Qn3i...

Craziest part is that because of Zcash's zero-knowledge design, there's no way to tell whether it was ever exploited. All ~$1.3B sitting in the Orchard pool (Zcash's main shielded/private pool, where most private ZEC lives) could have been minted out of thin air. BTW similar counterfeiting bug was disclosed in 2019, also never known to have been exploited.

all with the public model too, no Mythos access.

itwillnotbeasy··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
Who asked for those rounded windows anyway? They create so many problems; every app has its own border-radius, and it wastes precious screen space...
itwillnotbeasy··on ChatGPT conversations still lack timestamps after years of requests
But it still better than Gemini! They haven't figured how to put a chat name into webpage title. /s
itwillnotbeasy··on Why is OpenAI buying Windsurf?
Weird choice, given Google’s track record on privacy. Gemini uses your chats for training and human review them by default. You can opt out by turning off App Activity, but that disables chat history and integrations, which kinda kinda makes it useless. Claude respects your privacy by default and ChatGPT and Grok have an opt-out that doesn’t totally cripple the app.

So what makes Google less scummy? A cheaper price? I’m sure that won’t last long – they’ve played this game before with YouTube, Google Reader, and Search: hook users, dominate, then enshittify. Same old Google playbook: good → monopoly → crap.

itwillnotbeasy··on Organic Maps
It has a cool feature on Android, when phone is locked, I only need to press the unlock button to see the map, phone doesn't ask for a password/fingerprint scan. This saves so much time when traveling on a bicycle because I don't like planning a detailed route, i just set a destination point, and ride in that direction, choosing the best scenic view. In that scenario, my phone mostly sits in my pocket, and I pull it out only when I get lost, but it saves so much time through the whole route.

If I want to switch to another app, Android asks me to authenticate, I don't know why google maps doesn't work the same way.

That's an extremely dumb take

itwillnotbeasy··on Microsoft Edge sets Yandex as default search engine in Moldova
It's the same thing as company being based on Cayman Islands, it's mostly on paper really. Most of their offices, and human force are located in russia, in 2009 they sold golden share for 1 eur to the russian goverment(which allows to temporarily suspend the head of Yandex among other "benefits"), yeah and CEO(was resigned in dec 2022) and several other people from the board members are sanctioned by the West.

> "As founder and CEO of Yandex, he is supporting, materially or financially, the Government of the Russian Federation and is responsible for supporting actions or policies which undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine," the EU's listing states.

> The document also accuses Yandex of "promoting State media and narratives in its search results, and deranking and removing content critical of the Kremlin, such as content related to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine."

Yeah and they are going to change the formals too - Yandex NV(based in Netherlands) is considering turning the main part of the business into a separate Russian group https://newsunrolled.com/economy/132317.html

itwillnotbeasy··on Microsoft Edge sets Yandex as default search engine in Moldova
It's literally rewriting search queries to avoid showing putin in negative context, when people search for "khuilo" or "bunker grandpa", "main thief" etc.

They never released any official statements condemning the war or leaving russia, none of their services were shut down there, and they still actively hiring new people in russia. Yandex services is also widely known for spreading pro-war propaganda, disinformation and fakes while censoring opposition media: https://meduza.io/feature/2023/01/30/yandeks-blokiroval-izob...,

itwillnotbeasy··on Mac: It Just Works–Terribly
Isn't support for external displays is a basic functionality, that is expected to be handled by the system? MacOS makes sub-4k monitors pretty much unusable for people with good eyesight who works with text a lot. Yet Apple haven't fixed the jaggy fonts in a years, they deliberately made it worse by removing subpixel anti-aliasing.
itwillnotbeasy··on Plasma 5.25
Have used multiple monitors with latest KDE, and never had an issue with display scaling - both fonts and icons look good, whereas in MacOS fonts are just terrible on external displays, so far tried 23" 1080p, 27" 1440p and 34" ultrawide 1440p with the same result. And KDE also allows changing external display scale, where MacOS only offer setting lower resolution, seriously, wtf?

That's a pity that in year 2022 apple sells notebook with only 16GB of RAM for $2000 and there is still no adequate alternative for the macbooks in terms of hardware, battery life and driver support.

MacOS feels so limited compared to KDE, even base functionality like alt+tab that shows windows previews(and not icons), or window arrangment with keyboards shortcuts or by dragging to the display corners, is not possible without 3rd party software.

itwillnotbeasy··on MacBook Pro HDR display has slow response times
Just my thoughts: maybe the backlight itself is slow, and they were forsed to use slow matrix otherwise it would leat to more color distortions for fast moving objects.
itwillnotbeasy··on Big Oil Is Suing Countries to Block Climate Action
Why they're not talking about "environmentalists" in Germany which were against nuclear energy but completely okay with dirty coal plants? Making the country dependent on russian gas, with no alternatives, and thus allowing monopolist to make more money for their bloody things.
itwillnotbeasy··on RT challenges EU ban at Europe's second top court
If the press is controlled/funded by the Russian government and has been confirmed to regularly publish fake news as part of Russian propaganda, then the only option is to ban it.
itwillnotbeasy··on Russians are trying to flee – data from Google Trends
Leaving not because of the crimes of the current regime but because of the sanctions affecting their quality of life. I had many online "friends" and distant relatives from Russia, and most of them is like "not my business", i don't care about politics, even when you show pictures with all horrors of war. The other part is like: I'm against this, but what can we do, it's too risky to protest, i can get arrested for 14 days. Whereas in Ukraine: unarmed people stopping tanks at risk of being killed. Mind-blowing how different our nations is. So don't worry much about people who can't leave country now, they are complicit in their inaction no less than the regime itself.
itwillnotbeasy··on Dummy display for Apple Silicon Macs to achieve custom resolutions
This is my main problem with MacOs - text on non 4k displays is so blurry, Windows and Linux are doing much better job with rendering fonts. And Apple doesn't seem to care about it at all - they even removed subpixel aliasing in the recent system update (i guess it was High Sierra). So weird, given most of the high refresh rate monitors on the market is 1440p, so if you have a gaming pc you need to buy separate 4k monitor for your macbook, because no one seems to care about fixing this, WTF?
