itsthejb··on PostgreSQL upgrades are hard
For one thing, the isolation. I also run a “home lab”, and started off as a newbie running everything on bare metal. Quickly ran into dependency issues, and recreating the setup was painful, even if I had used something like a ansible

Nowadays my setup is a very minimal server install, setup “raw” services like SSH, basic monitoring, mDNS. Then install Docker and “up” all my compose yamls, pointing to persistent directories on disk

It’s easy enough that migrating from Centos Stream to Ubuntu server took 24hrs for the meat of it

itsthejb··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
Also lots. One particularly fun one was a script that scraped fund prices for an old (bad) life insurance policy I had. Dump them to an SQLite db, and then later added plotting graphs which it would telegram to me once a week
itsthejb··on An Ode to Apple’s Hide My Email
With your own domain? Make sure you’ve got an the SPF, DKIM set up correctly, and register your domain with gmail’s postmaster tools. I moved my domain recently, and had completely forgotten about all that stuff I’d set up years ago. Started losing mails, redid the setup
itsthejb··on Ask HN: How to find a job in 2021 if I dislike remote?
It doesn’t really suit me either, but the long term massive benefits of earning a big city salary, without having to live in a big city, seem to be the solution to the urbanisation that’s been forced upon us in recent decades
itsthejb··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
I know I shouldn’t, but reading about people who successfully surfed the tech bubble makes me groan. Because, even though I’ve also done well in Europe, I almost moved to the U.S. twice (couldn’t get offers), and passed up interviewing at Shopify before they exploded

So it’s painful thinking that you were very much in the right place at the right time, but were just a step or two away from the stratosphere… however, it’s all relative I guess, those with 2 mil envy those with 5 mil

itsthejb··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
Regarding not losing the keys (ie. responsibility for your own security), this was my #1 grounds for skepticism in crypto when I first entered the space. I could predict that without some compromise on this, most people would not use crypto. However, social recovery is already one potential solution for that, so don’t discount that surprising ideas can come up (https://cryptonews.com/news/social-recovery-wallet-is-better...)
itsthejb··on iOS 15 Humane
Another solution is no phones (chargers) in the bedroom. Have your "charging station" in the living room
itsthejb··on Split any song into its stems – vocals, instrumentals, bass, drums, piano
This effect operates on the very simple logic that vocals tend to be the only fully centre panned channel in the mix. The same approach won't work for anything else, and won't work on older stereo recordings where hard left/right panning of vocals was a lot more common than nowadays
itsthejb··on Mayan-EDMS: Free Open Source Document Management System
Really fantastic tool. Glad I finally made the effort to export my PDFs (previously stored in nextcloud) to this tool
itsthejb··on Microsoft changed how it interviews software developers
Once I wanted to interview for a company that wanted me to implement a FULL chat client, including the full range of auxiliary features, for step one...
itsthejb··on Nihon Noir
Seconded. It's a fantastic museum. And oddly space aged building considering the antique contents...
itsthejb··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
Are you comparing that salary to US salaries? Because the still relatively low cost of living in Berlin makes that anything but low
itsthejb··on Mmm, Pi-hole
Honestly, considering how cheaply you can implement this (I resurrected an unused OrangePiZero), how easily it can be used (just plug it into a router LAN socket), it's crazy that the creators aren't actively looking to monetize this
itsthejb··on Move deliberately, fix things: How Coinbase is building a cryptocurrency empire
As someone who recently tried to help a friend with recovering a lost/forgotten/who knows DashCore wallet password, containing a reasonable decent amount of funds, I'm skeptical that _most people_ will be willing to accept sole responsibility for their financial security. Most would rather defer to a third party. Which rather undermines the entire crypto project, it would seem
itsthejb··on Facebook Employees Are Quitting or Switching Departments Over Ethical Concerns
And it'll be fun when stuff like this http://time.com/4793331/instagram-social-media-mental-health... starts getting more mainstream traction...
itsthejb··on A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance
Discount battery replacement for my 6 will come in very handy

itsthejb··on In Japan, small children take the subway and run errands alone (2015)
They also have one of the lowest birth rates in Europe. Although apparently it increased a little recently...
itsthejb··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
Apple software quality has got very sloppy (again). I recall it was particularly bad around 2014, but then seemed to have improved. Seems the sloppiness is back again. It would seem Apple is no unique in the regard that its success has made it fat and lazy. My particular favourite one at the moment is that in iOS 11.1.2 navigation transition animations eventually break if the device is running long enough (a few days). Restarting the device fixes this. The fun part is trying to work out why on earth this would be? Transition animations are cached?
itsthejb··on Apology after Japanese train departs 20 seconds early
Whilst this is a lot of fun, and the Japanese transport system is certainly something to be generally admired and imitated, unless I'm the only one here, just wanted to point out that there is a dark side to this also: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/opinion/2007/01/09/editorials/d...

Takami apparently was worried about being punished for overrunning Itami Station. In the past, he had received punitive education three times for errors and had his wages and bonuses docked. JR West’s education program, which included writing “soul searching” compositions, was known to be humiliating.
itsthejb··on “Google: it is time to return to not being evil”
Google Docs. Text selection, for one thing, is off on Safari
itsthejb··on Reducing the size of iOS app binaries
They still aren't "full" view controllers, though. I don't think any of the controller callbacks are executed. I would be surprised if custom drawing is possible. This feature mostly seems to let you leverage autolayout and size classes, which is probably enough for most people
itsthejb··on Uber's 'hustle-oriented' culture becomes a black mark on employees' résumés
The Guardian used to be a "serious" newspaper, but since they went after markets outside of the UK, including online, they're more of a "classy tabloid". Farming clickbait. A very unfortunate turn. Used to really enjoy their culture content in the 90s
