Can we not have opinions on trade and economics on social media now?
itsspring··on Most tech content is bullshit
This resonates with me. I use caution now, as much security (and cryptography) advice on StackOverflow is wrong and Perpetuates harmful patterns, yet is never taken down. What’s worse? It often shows up at the top of Google. Many devs don’t show the same level of caution until something blows up
itsspring··on USB-C is still a mess
Ya, I found the answer on Apple's site:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208368

> Compared with Apple USB-C Charge Cable The Apple USB-C Charge Cable is longer (2m) and also supports charging, but data-transfer speed is limited to 480Mbps (USB 2.0) and it doesn't support video. The Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable has Thunderbolt logo on the sleeve of each connector. Either cable can be used with the Apple USB-C Power Adapter.

itsspring··on USB-C is still a mess
Heh, just this week I was struggling to get a device to work with my laptop, until after 90+ minutes I realized there were different types of USB-C, and the one I had (the Apple charger cable) only did charging.

I needed one that transmitted video, so I then went to order a $10 USB-C, only to realize those also only did charging. Finally found what I needed, but I thought USB-C was finally "universal", but turns out much of that is just marketing...

Edit: Turns out the one I just bought ($40 USB-C Apple thunderbolt cable) doesn't even fit into the device because the edges are too thick. Ridiculous

itsspring··on CMU’s ‘Penrose’ Turns Complex Math Notations into Illustrative Diagrams
I read through the Penrose presentation slides a few weeks ago and was very impressed with the perspective, idea, and implementation compared to the other dozens of tools I've looked at. I'm not particularly a math specialist, but I do think I'll use Penrose soon. However, it might not immediately fit my needs today.

The presentation made it appear that this was an initial implementation, and that more progress will be needed to fit more use-cases, which is great! Hopefully I can contribute.

I’m the same way. It’s like I am more awake after 3pm and ready to finally start working. I do drink caffeine, which helps
itsspring··on Fake news is fooling more conservatives than liberals. Why?
I would have to agree. Unless they only interviewed the people who saw a targeted campaign of just that fake info, and then asked how many of them believed it. But broadly there's no way that's an accurate percentage

Looks like Mitch McConnell is doing well just following the benchmark (VFIAX: Vanguard 500 Index Admiral Fund)
itsspring··on Software Engineering Within SpaceX
> I'm not sure using a touch screen in a high-g environment is a good idea.

Agreed. All of the events during this time are fully automatic. If the astronauts needed to personally abort for a reason that ground control did not see, I saw what appeared to be a physical abort switch that needed to be turned and pulled (but I could be wrong)

Yup, I'd prefer NOT to touch the systems of the vehicle that's serving as my lifeboat, life support, and ONLY re-entry option.

itsspring··on Police attacks against journalists across the U.S. since May 28
The ACLU has too many objectives, so I don't think defending journalism is their primary goal. This fund is probably better, dollar for dollar: https://www.spj.org/ldf.asp
itsspring··on Google sued for secretly amassing vast trove of user data
> they have unprecedented ability to forecast future events.

Per Matt Levine's "anything can be securities fraud if you don't tell your shareholders about it", then having the "unprecedented ability to forecast future events" and not informing your shareholders about it could be argued as securities fraud in court. Something to think about.

itsspring··on Police attacks against journalists across the U.S. since May 28
When "Freedom of the Press" is under attack, newspapers/press/media have had their legal counsel file lawsuits against the government. But with the demise of revenue for many newspapers (and many going out of business), I wonder if they will take those expensive steps.
itsspring··on Show HN: I made a platform for free-to-play games
>Unfortunately not for me. Cloudflare + Google in the site. Have to make an account for "free" games.

Ya, and I clicked on a game and uBlock stopped and warned me about a tracker

itsspring··on Microsoft now credits maker of AppGet but offers no apology
Is there a way to protest this?

Perhaps devs should upload every package with a readme that includes a reminder for developers, something like:

"This package is dedicated to Keivan Beigi. Read more about what Microsoft did to Kevin here: thankyoukevin.com"

Any better ideas?

Most students I’ve met have no idea how their loans work or what APR is, so I’m sure they’ll keep paying. It’s sad but true

I got a graduate degree online from a well ranked uni because I didn’t want to commute or move.
itsspring··on The nightmare that colleges face this fall
Huh, this is your opinion but it’s not true in reality. In many cases, you won’t even know that a degree was online. Some schools use a different title while others don’t. And as someone who does a lot of phone interviewers, who cares? Can they do the job?
itsspring··on The nightmare that colleges face this fall
I like the alt-ed world too, but the person you’re replying to is correct: a 12 week boot camp is the equivalent of what? maybe one or two courses? Not even the same ballpark
itsspring··on The nightmare that colleges face this fall
Let it be. Lay off admins, restructure their loans, Stop building new buildings, lower costs, and use their endowments to fund the difference. And get rid of some programs
itsspring··on The nightmare that colleges face this fall
