itsmartapuntocm··on Ask HN: Cleanest way to manage Windows OS?
They can and do refuse to work if they detect they're running in a VM.
itsmartapuntocm··on Air Canada is responsible for chatbot's mistake: B.C. tribunal
They want to have their cake and eat it too. To use AI to get rid of paying for labor, but also not assume any of the risks that go along with it.
itsmartapuntocm··on Damn Small Linux 2024
Only the inner part where you can draw a circle contains actual data. The rest is just blank, but as long as it’s balanced it works just fine.
itsmartapuntocm··on Boeing needs to get real: the 737 MAX should probably be scrapped
> More fundamentally they ought to go back in time and change it so instead of making the 787 they made a 737 replacement.

They did. It was called the 757. But Boeing killed it off about 5-10 years too early.

itsmartapuntocm··on Game Boy / Color Architecture
I had a few. The quality was about what you’d expect for a video on a game boy cartridge.
itsmartapuntocm··on Beeper Mini is now open-source
Sounds like a good way to suss out the materialistic people in your life to be honest.
itsmartapuntocm··on Flipboard Begins to Federate
Dang. I loved that it was still there as a relic of when it wasn’t quite as mainstream.
itsmartapuntocm··on Flipboard Begins to Federate
After all this time I think Facebook still you gives the option to send you PGP encrypted emails, which is pretty wild.
itsmartapuntocm··on A real-time 3D digital map of Tokyo's public transport system
Bangkok's is still inadequate but I give them credit because they had a late start compared to most of the other cities on the list. They've built about 150 miles of rail transit within the last 25 years.

I remember when I grew up in Bangkok in the 90's and saw the pillars go up for the Skytrain, it still seemed like a pipe dream at the time.

itsmartapuntocm··on An Open Letter to Taylor Swift
Had to scroll 3/4 of the way through the letter to figure out what he was asking for.
itsmartapuntocm··on Heat pumps show how hard decarbonisation will be
Split system heat pumps at least are almost exactly the same as a regular AC condenser, only difference being that there’s a reversing valve to reverse the flow of refrigerant.
itsmartapuntocm··on Heat pumps show how hard decarbonisation will be
You don’t want to oversize the unit because then the cooling runtime will be too short to properly dehumidify.

The solution usually is like in your case to include an auxiliary heat source such as electric or gas for those extreme cold days the heat pump can’t keep up.

itsmartapuntocm··on We’re all just temporarily abled
Same here. Reading about people anguishing about it online only made me sink further into despair about it. And white noise, while it helped at first, eventually became sort of a crutch and didn’t really help me get over it in the long term.

What eventually worked for me ironically was reading a study that the vast majority of people with tinnitus do improve over time, whether it’s an actual reduction in the noise or at least the perception of it. Tinnitus is funny in that it bothers us because the brain sees a sound it is creating itself as a threat, and eventually it learns to longer treat itself that way.

Mine did eventually get better. I don’t know if it actually got better, or if I just stopped caring about it so much. But I do enjoy silence again because for me, this is my new form of silence. It’s still there in some form, and some days like when I’m stressed it is noticeably louder. But it no longer bothers me.

itsmartapuntocm··on We’re all just temporarily abled
Standing too close to a speaker at a house party gave me permanent tinnitus. Took me a long time to accept it mentally and emotionally. Now I’m a lot more careful with my hearing.
itsmartapuntocm··on Windows 11 will happily execute a binary compiled 30 years ago
Raymond Chen made a great point in his book “The Old New Thing”. If a hacky program suddenly doesn’t work when you upgrade to a new version of Windows, the user isn’t going to blame the program. They’re going to blame the OS because that’s what changed.
itsmartapuntocm··on Sorting in Emacs
It’s my favorite git client altogether.
itsmartapuntocm··on The crash of Air France flight 447 (2021)
Are you thinking of Helios Airways Flight 522? That Ethiopian Airlines flight was a hijacking.

itsmartapuntocm··on Bram Moolenaar has died
I’ll do it for you, I’d be interested in reading that blog.
itsmartapuntocm··on We’re now finding out the damaging results of the mandated return to the office
Mine is doing the opposite. Moving us all to a new building that does away with offices in favor of an open floor plan.
itsmartapuntocm··on Egregoria: 3D City Builder without a grid
The goofy aspects of Simcity like the animated advisors and the music really made it feel alive. It’s why I still prefer the old ones to CS.
itsmartapuntocm··on Every time you click this link, it will send you to a random Web 1.0 website
Looks like they noticed:

> 15th July 2023: Fix link rot

> The fact that this page is now old enough to vote hasn't stopped the internet rediscovering it. Much as I would like keep everything preserved exactly as it was as an example of the older, simpler web, some of the links above had become dead or worse, so they've been removed.

itsmartapuntocm··on How to verify your domain on Nostr and Bluesky (for micro.blog users)
I could’ve been selling codes this whole time?
itsmartapuntocm··on How the new Threads app is made
The narrative had already been seeded that mastodon is too fractured/difficult. And Threads has the momentum of Facebook/Instagram pushing it forward.
itsmartapuntocm··on First cases of malaria in the US in 20 years
Maybe to emphasize the point that it was acquired from mosquitos in the US.
itsmartapuntocm··on FreeBSD at 30: Its secrets to success
Even OpenBSD has better wifi support. I'm able to use the WLAN adapter in my Pi 3 with OpenBSD, but it doesn't work in FreeBSD.
itsmartapuntocm··on Heat Pumps – The Well-Tempered Future of A/Cs
That price is absurd. Quoting an equivalent sized commercial installation from my company with union labor would be half that.
itsmartapuntocm··on Heat Pumps – The Well-Tempered Future of A/Cs
I work in the HVAC industry and "heat pump" in the context of A/C units exclusively refers to models that cool and heat by reversing the refrigerant flow.
itsmartapuntocm··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
Lemmy has scratched the itch for me. Obviously not as big or thorough as Reddit, but I’ve found a lot of the niches I used to frequent on Reddit, and they’re fairly active.
