itsagavin··on A mechanical keyboard with programmable knobs and full color screen panel
I've been bothered for a while by these keyboards with non standard layouts. They tend to land on the budget side of the spectrum and are different for the sake of being different and cool. This means a lot of kids end up with these keyboards and as an adult will have to unlearn and relearn how to type.
itsagavin··on Compuserve
As a young man I spent lots of energy collecting and trading stolen credit cards on IRC. A large amount of what I was doing with them was carding local shell accounts so that I could avoid long distance charges by telnetting in to Compuserve and Genie. I of course carded my accounts there as well. I was hooked on an online airplane game and mechwarrior type arena game and still fondly look back on both those experiences. As you can imagine someone on that path without guidance life didn't go so hot and I still every now and then wish I could man a turret in a b17 on an airfield run and enjoy the simpler times.
itsagavin··on Ravenchord – A Radical Redesign of the Piano
I've been getting spammed with this crap for a couple weeks by ad networks weird to see it here frontpage. It's not even a product what's the game?
itsagavin··on Electric bike, stupid love of my life
Anecdotally it seems like these things are causing a crazy amount of head injuries. I get all the tales from the ICU at the dinner table and if I had kids I don't know if I would even let them hang out with another kid if they had an ebike. They seem super cool and I always stop to watch someone zoom buy but I can't help but notice that a lot of the people on ebikes shouldn't be going that fast and aren't built to take a spill.
itsagavin··on On Becoming a VP of Engineering
Its just HR PR forced on the poor dude. I'm a tech adjacent poor but I've seen many been forced to write something and it's always kind of like this. A bunch of people in the company will write a piece or two like this so something recent comes up in searches during campus recruiting. It serves two purposes, just the right amount of ass kissing and gassing up potential recruits.
itsagavin··on Jellyfin: Free software media system
The unfortunate reality of Jellyfish is unless it ever comes baked in to Xboxes and smart TVs it doesn't solve the problem all media centers that aren't Plex have. If you can't add it from an app store and use the tv remote or game controller to navigate it no one I know will use it. So its Plex and nothing else until dethroned because I'm sure like most I'm running an internet facing media server for others.
itsagavin··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
The idea is that, the derivative came after the virtuoso. Of course what came after is more complex costs more takes more is more impressive blah blah. Dismissing those that thought the thought or solved for a problem before it was, is such a dumb thing people do.
itsagavin··on An Example of a Sad Google Account Recovery Failure and Its Effects
I pay for Google One for this reason and ultimately account recovery due to theft if it came to it. I've never had to reach out to Google but supposedly of you are a paying customer customer service does exist. I know that the FI infrastructure has CS you can reach as I talked to them back when fi first launched and I did some promotion flipping to get a pixel. I'm probably gonna pay for Microsoft's offering it seems you can't just buy hotmail anymore and instead have to pay for the whole office + storage subscription. Same reasoning though I want CS I can reach at my email provider and I want to know they still exist in 20 years if email still exists.
itsagavin··on Chinese investment in Afghanistan’s lithium sector (2022)
Because "Afghanistan" only exists when the tribal autonomy is threatened otherwise Afghanistan has no real central government and it seems there is no will to be centrally governed. A completely different way of life the west continues to not understand. China will divide and conquer as it does in other similar regions just by making it too painful to not take their money when your local competition is.
itsagavin··on Never Give Money to Charity
This article is terrible but if you look at somewhere like Somalia that will experience famine on a cycle due to its regional weather patterns. Charities push the population of Somalia past the point of self reliance then act pikachu faced when the kids starve to death and the armies loosen their belts because it didn't rain.
itsagavin··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
Yes its messy but we are fully capable of cursing any bloodline that produces poison for consumption for the next 100 years and we should. Red or Blue we should all be together on this. Drugs are a tough issue but fentanyl and the grift that involves murder of the most vulnerable is disgusting.
itsagavin··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
I'm late to this discussion and don't expect anyone to read my comment. If America is so great why aren't we able to find the labs producing fentanyl and bomb them back to rare earth mineral. No empire in the past would of accepted such an attack and that's what it is. If it was a 50/50 if vodka killed you we would murder and imprison until it wasn't.
itsagavin··on Ao486_MiSTer: i486 core for the MiSTer FPGA gaming system
My understanding is you order it from the manufacturer. They for the past couple years have claimed a lead time of 4-6 weeks but consistently shipped in 10 days or so. No idea the current situation.
itsagavin··on Ao486_MiSTer: i486 core for the MiSTer FPGA gaming system
I don't see why not its basically a 386/33 performance wise. Why not just use PCem + OBS? If you go the mister route, the $50 capture box from EVGA works a dream. I'm able to get simultaneous component and HDMI using the analog add-on board. I run the HDMI out to a splitter then one output to HDMI>VGA for CRT monitor. The remaining HDMI cable to a capture box and pass through to my desk monitor. Lastly component in to a CRT TV. It all just works, at the same time.

itsagavin··on Crypto.com will delist Tether in Canada to comply with Ontario regulator
The end game here and rug pull will be a mass conversion on exchanges to any and every other asset from usdt. Most likely this will far exceed almost every exchanges actual reserves and they will internalize the buy side and add some numbers to a database. Exchanges will attempt to redeem all the USDT they now hold, the USDT they didn't also fabricate out of thin air that is. This bank run on Tether exposes Tethers own lack of liquid reserves causing both Tether and said exchanges to become insolvent taking everyone down with them. After an event like this the utility of crypto will remain but the money won't return for a long long time. This is how I see this all going. I think places like coinbase, kraken etc Will survive but almost no one will care when the shell game is over.
itsagavin··on The source code for Duelyst, a digital collectible card game
This issue is totally destroying Ubisoft's store/launcher. For years users have complained about having to log in every time. It was a huge friction point. The UI even has an option to save credentials it just doesn't. Ubisoft is currently moving their entire catalog back to Steam.
itsagavin··on Thousands trapped on Pine Ridge burn clothes for warmth in wake of storm
I spent time in ND, SD and MN matching online and phone wagering with receptive reservations. IMHO if you want to escape the res you gotta go far far away. Think 1000 miles. The racism in the Midwest is so entrenched that they solved the who!e uncomfortable mingling with people you hate thing by COMPLETELY excluding natives from society. The amount of times I saw natives bounced just for walking in to a bar in Fargo was disgusting. Its just assumed by race they are drunk, poor, vagrant and violent.
itsagavin··on Thousands trapped on Pine Ridge burn clothes for warmth in wake of storm
I can answer this as a dude that started off life at 11 homeless and went from there. Live in unquestionable poverty along with your support network of $4000 a year earners? Or take a bus to any random American city and get ready for your how many days can a green recruit last in Nam scenario?
itsagavin··on Show HN: Wavvy – web-based audio editor (Audacity port)
Lol what? No you are right struggling to use your smart phone while driving and simultaneously being blinded by the sun are one of humanities great struggles. Let's get real accessibility has and will always take a back seat to innovation unless the innovator is in some way also disabled. You can always circle back around but no disabled person has any right to talk down to someone else because they weren't a first consideration.
itsagavin··on Show HN: Wavvy – web-based audio editor (Audacity port)
Accessibility is great but its hardly humanity's goal. In most instances your burden is no one else's unless we are talking life or death.
itsagavin··on Steam has been banned in China
The reality is every step you took was observed and I would assume even where you slept both video and audio were recorded.
itsagavin··on Mt32-pi: A baremetal Roland MT-32 emulator
You can buy a hat for the pi that allows you to connect via serial to a mister fpga such as this one https://misterfpga.co.uk/product/mister-fpga-mt32-pi-hat-v2-...

From what I've seen it works great with the old computer cores. I've only gone so far as to emulate Roland over network on a PC but even that works pretty great with the Mister. Thought y'all might be interested in one of the more common ways I see this being used.

itsagavin··on 'Exercised' Explains Why It Can Be Hard to Commit to Working Out
By far the biggest help is how much easier it is to reach the zone. It is crazy how easy exercise is when you are lost in deep thought.
itsagavin··on 'Exercised' Explains Why It Can Be Hard to Commit to Working Out
To clarify preworkout I use .15-.2 of a gram of extract smoked out of a quartz nail and water pipe. I use a similar amount in the evening. I no longer combust any flower and breath much easier because of it. I did use RSO an edible concentrate on the begining to get through the pain in the evening I was eating 150mg-200mg thc in a gelcap in the evening. Vape cartridges are an option but I've never found one I liked. It's fair to not I have a very high tolerance and most people would not know I was under the influence, most people could use far less.
itsagavin··on 'Exercised' Explains Why It Can Be Hard to Commit to Working Out
Marijuana was pivotal to me being able to live a life of daily exercise. I dropped 140lbs and run a daily 8k on trails from being extremely obese in the span of 2 years. If it is legal for you to try it I highly recommend it for its ability to help you push through mental blocks and it's appreciable aid in recovery.

What domestic task has ever been more time consuming or important than daily food preparation. You have to be quite far up the food ladder and way out touch to trot this rant out.
