itsacomment··on Asking the wrong questions (2017)
Why would that be any metric for the 99.9% of drivers that need something like that perhapd twice in a decade and shouldn't base their purchasing off that?
itsacomment··on I gave my time and expertise to StackOverflow because it was licensed CC-BY-SA
> I don't understand why they would want to remove their code instead of wanting it to live on and further help more people through AI.

They do explain that in the post: because of the missing reciprocity. They didn't do it so OpenAI could profit off other's work, but to build a community with others. It's a pretty common motivator for humans.

That's how I, NAL, read "share-alike": derivative work needs to be shared again instead of walled off.
itsacomment··on 20 Years of "Not Even Wrong"
I hope you mean all the theoretical physicists working on the high energy theories of physics, because 30% is a sadly high figure even for that subfield. If 30% of all theorists would actually be of no use to any other physicists, that would be horrendous.

Our brains are very modular. I'd not be surprised at all if a similarly modular structure would turn out to be the next big step for LLMs.
itsacomment··on Preparedness Framework
It is enhanced , by a lot, by technology, though. It's pretty damn common that a new technology enables a different quantity of something so much that it effectively is a different quality of interaction.
itsacomment··on Quantum computing's reality check
Don't greyed out comments mean someone is downvoting you? What's going on in this thread, this is the second comment of yours that's factually far better than the preceding one but greyed out.

I agree with you, quantum ai has only ever been people shouting "quantum" at black box neural nets, as if that had ever produced a viable algorithm yet...

itsacomment··on Large-scale violence in Late Neolithic Western Europe based on skeletal evidence
The criminal was a) condemned, so organized state violence and b) brought over by the entire village, so a group of people. Not an individual outburst of violence, then.

The group of people trying to head-butt the chicken to death are playing a sport. Often enough to at some time add trumpets to it.

>Historically even in absolute monarchies (where you would think power relations have been settled would be paralyzed by internal strife, infighting clans etc.)

This isn't surprising at all given that "absolute monarchy" was more of a marketing term than a description of reality.

England, which rather decisively cut off their monarchs' pretensions at absolute power, was far more centralized than whatever the fuck the different parlements (sp?) of France or the Spanish cortez were doing during the absolutist age.

Both cases are arguably examples not of individual violence but organized group violence.
itsacomment··on Fairphone 4 is coming to the US
It's not only the Asian workers! They also go to great pains to make sure the people mining the basic resources, for example in the Congo or in Peru, are paid more fairly than usual. That combined with pretty much what you said makes the price easily worth it for me.
itsacomment··on Fairphone 4 is coming to the US
I wasn't able to tell from a quick scroll over the homepage, but while they fix instead of replacing, teracube don't seem to include fairly sourced resources, which are a pretty big sales point for fairphone
itsacomment··on Smart Guy Productivity Pitfalls (2013)
Calling bathroom visits 'productive' is exactly the kind of lie to yourself the article goes on about. So your product is time spent sitting around and shitting in a bowl? Then go ahead and optimize for number of bathroom breaks..

Breaks are necessary, and paid time, certainly - I'm not masochist enough to deduct every small break from my work time - but neither is John Carmack, nor is the author arguing for that.

itsacomment··on Terence Tao on GPT-4
He'd be a seriously bad professor if he wasted the time of the people he was supposed to be teaching with copying badly formatted data for a talk.
itsacomment··on Ivy League Schools Sure Look Like a Cartel
The US college sports system is mainly a feeding ground for professional sports teams, and none of that is necessary for either education or social destratification.

It is only vital in the sense that people have vested interests in it, but it's not to the benefit of the students.

itsacomment··on Ask HN: Developer abused “sign in with GitHub”?
Use authenticator apps or things like yubikeys for 2fa, using your phone number is not a security benefit but an exploit waiting to happen at this point.
itsacomment··on Ask HN: Developer abused “sign in with GitHub”?
See, my first question would be "WHY?!".

Every unnecessary permission is suspicious until proven not to be, and will at the very least be used in ways that I would not, if not even actively to my detriment.

Your android flashlight demanding to read your contacts is trying to scam you ( and worse, your contacts through your negligence), not just ask for some harmless permission you needn't care about.

itsacomment··on Ask HN: Developer abused “sign in with GitHub”?
Wait, after finding out the site is obviously just trying to grab as much info from you as can be profitably marketed and even after it sets itself up for further abuse, you are still considering signing up?! I really hope I'm missing sarcasm there, cause otherwise you need to readjust the amount red flags you are willing to ignore.

"Sign up with" is a tracker's paradise anyway, but not even offering something untrackable like email is just screaming out for everyone to hear that you are the product. With the abusive access demanded, it's down to victim, really.

Have some pride, people, and don't fall for these scams!

itsacomment··on Bill Watterson, Picasso, and self promotion
One thing the article misses is the reason why we loom down on self-promotion: it's not because it seems easy, but because it's value neutral. Promotion does not care if you actually did any work or are just shilling a bunch of words void of any idea. The visceral reaction to self promotion is in part due to hard won experience that those that talk loudest about their achievements are often lacking in actual value to offer.

That doesn't mean the rest of the article is wrong: promotion is a necessity for most artists ( and many others), but nonetheless there are quite a few people that need to be told to do less self promotion and more actual ( creative, for artists) work.
