itbeho··on If you type the letter “i” and it autocorrects to an “A” with a symbol
So many bugs... Some that irritate me most: lots of text boxes won’t let me copy/paste. Often a delay when changing from portrait to landscape in Safari with jumbled formatting after. What appears to be intentional programmatic latency in several apps (ie calculator but also the share function in Safari)

I’m not so married to my iPhone that I won’t investigate switching to something else.

itbeho··on No, of that I'm innocent
This person needs to get immediate professional help on several levels (mental, legal, family counseling). He is a train wreck for his family.
itbeho··on Try quickly typing 1+ 2 + 3 into the iOS 11 Calculator
Remember when Steve Jobs introduced Snow Leopard as a stability/maintenance release without much in the way of new shiny features? Maybe Apple can revisit that idea.

Aside from bugs, don't even get me started on the giant fucking labels in the iOS 11 mail app telling me which folder I'm in....

itbeho··on Why are today's teens putting off driving, dating and drinking?
Those kids and their damn rock and roll :)
itbeho··on How to Kill a Possum
It's not Oakland - plenty of great people there.
itbeho··on How to Kill a Possum
I live on acreage outside city limits and have had to dispatch the occasional varmint.

However, I would not suggest a firearm (or airgun) in a city environment, especially not one like Oakland, where intent may be hard to judge by authorities, and local ordinances might land one in legal jeopardy.

My suggestion in this scenario would be to purchase a Havahart live trap. Bait it with a little canned tuna fish or peanut butter. Catch the offending critter and call the local animal control agency. They will come out and take care of it for you. In some cases animal control will lend you a trap if you have an ongoing problem.

He had a small but memorable role in Red Dawn 1984.

And also Escape From New York 1981. A great talent!

itbeho··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2017 – Show and tell
That sort of has a "those who can, do. Those who can't, teach" ring to it :)

I enjoy your podcast Justin. I'd keep swinging for the fences unless you just have a passion to teach.

Let's stop ignoring violence when it suits our own political agenda and start condemning it wherever it occurs. Racism has no place in our society and violent acts only fuel it. Pointing that out doesn't imply someone is "defending white supremacists".
itbeho··on Ask HN: What language/framework do you plan to use in your next project?
Your needs might be different from mine, but I'm using Gatling for push-to-deploy on a couple of production Elixir apps. It includes the ability to do hot upgrades. Deployment couldn't be much easier than this.

itbeho··on Ask HN: What language/framework do you plan to use in your next project?
Elixir/Phoenix. I've already completed a couple of projects with Phoenix and am happy with the results.
itbeho··on Ask HN: Coping with Loneliness
I still struggle with loneliness from time to time. A sporting activity can help. In my case, I started sailing. I couldn't afford a boat of my own at the time (1994, I couldn't afford much of anything then to be honest), but the local yacht club is volunteer oriented and easy to join. I was able to sail club boats and that made it easy to interact with other people with a similar interest. The volunteer aspect meant I was frequently paired up with someone else helping out with club functions. Obviously it doesn't have to be sailing, but getting outdoors with an activity that involves teamwork can really help.
itbeho··on How Discord Scaled Elixir to 5M Concurrent Users
It's still early. I've bet on the wrong horse (stack) before, so take my comments with a grain of salt, but I know several companies that are currently adopting Elixir/Phoenix with the same level of excitement that I recall from the early days of Ruby/Rails. It may never be "Rails big", but there is definitely some momentum building.

Susan Fowler tweeted that Chris Sacca has been DMing her on Twitter, tring to "manipulate" her to stop tweeting about him. This after his blog post claiming to be changing his ways.

itbeho··on Pistol sights
I grew up in a small town in central California. High School in the early 80's - lots of kids from ag/ranching backgrounds would park their trucks in the school parking lot with a rifle or shotgun hanging in a rack in the back window. I don't recall anyone being particularly bothered by that practice or any problems relating to it.

Same town, different era: My 12 year old nephew received a poor grade and "this is terrible!" written on his essay by his teacher because "What I did last weekend" recapped target shooting with his dad and grandpa at the range.

itbeho··on Apple Events – WWDC Keynote, June 2017 [video]
I'd love to see the "1984" commercial played right before that one to contrast how much Apple has changed. From a message of empowering people with technology to "You're stupid without us" condescension...
itbeho··on An anti-ageing startup is offering transfusions of blood from young people
It's a documentary.

itbeho··on Twitter co-founder Biz Stone is returning to the company
Culture? His description sounds more like a cluster fuck of ego in the making.
itbeho··on Redesigning Apple Music after Being Rejected
I switched to Cesium after experiencing Music randomly enabling repeat or shuffle with no intuitive way to disable. Turns out you need to swipe up "from the bottom" where "bottom" is somewhere 1/3 of the way up to see those options.
itbeho··on ESPN Can't Afford to Go on Like This
I like to watch sports for the competition, not preachy politics. Life in America is already too polarized politically. It's a shame broadcast sports can't be at least one place for common ground.
itbeho··on Show HN: Sorting Two Metric Tons of Lego
Perhaps subject them to a near vacuum state? Pressure differential of trapped air in pieces might pop them apart.
itbeho··on Hanging up my spurs
I think it's more likely that the current hype cycle may be coming to a close. The items you mentioned will all be part of the next one.
itbeho··on Republicans pull healthcare legislation plan in blow to Trump
I've been a frequent critic of Obamacare. I've personally experienced some of its shortcomings: lesser coverage, more out of pocket, higher deductibles, can't see the family doctor my other family members see, and that I saw for years, etc.

But I saw nothing from the Republicans that indicated they were fixing or improving anything.

I think a number of dissenting House Republicans know that premiums are going to go up no matter what and decided they'd rather see Obamacare go down the drain with his name on it than step up and fix what needs fixing.

itbeho··on Ask HN: Why don't developers unionize?
"Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy states that in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people:

First, there will be those who are devoted to the goals of the organization. Examples are dedicated classroom teachers in an educational bureaucracy, many of the engineers and launch technicians and scientists at NASA, even some agricultural scientists and advisors in the former Soviet Union collective farming administration.

Secondly, there will be those dedicated to the organization itself. Examples are many of the administrators in the education system, many professors of education, many teachers union officials, much of the NASA headquarters staff, etc.

The Iron Law states that in every case the second group will gain and keep control of the organization. It will write the rules, and control promotions within the organization."

itbeho··on Affordable Care
You can add the following against it in my case:

- not able to keep my existing health plan. I had a great low-ish deductible plan with good benefits cancelled due to ACA.

- not able to continue seeing my family doctor (that my folks and sister still see). I'm pretty sure the current doctor I have hates all his patients and staff.

And yes, it costs a lot more in terms of premiums, deductibles and prescription meds. But also in travel time because the other physicians in my town that accept CoveredCA stopped accepting new patients.

itbeho··on Ask HN: What's your dev machine setup?
I received a maxed out 2016 15" MBP on Tuesday and so far am happy with it. The ESC key (or physical lack thereof) was only a mild irritant at first and I've already adapted.
itbeho··on 2016 Retina MacBook Pro Caveats
Wifi problems on a MBP again? For fuck's sake... I'll probably make do with what I have for a bit longer or find a 2015 refurb.

Or go all bohemian and spin up linux on a chromebook.
