itbeho··on The frenzied world of rare watches
Fellow owner of a 2531.80 of a similar vintage. It's been on my wrist through many sailing and climbing adventures. Fantastic watch for the money and quite durable. Keeps great time for a mechanical watch as well.
itbeho··on The Superhero Industry Hates Children (2019)
I remember the days when a superhero would fight an army of bad guys, against overwhelming odds, and win. Now it's an army of superheros (Avengers as an example) against one bad guy and their win is often ambiguous. It just doesn't have the same payoff for the time spent consuming the entertainment.

itbeho··on Ask HN: Anyone have stock option horror stories?
Not sure if this is a horror story but it's an interesting recent dilemma. I started as a contractor for a startup about 8 years ago and was awarded some Non Qualified stock options that vested but were not exercised. I never came on board as an employee, but did do contract work from time to time. After a couple of years, I moved on to better opportunities, but the contract was never really terminated. The startup in question recently merged with a larger company and during due diligence my options were discovered.

So.. they let me know I have these options if I wish to exercise them in the next 90 days. It looks like I'll have a taxable event just by exercising them as they are NQ. Not sure if it is really worth the risk as I still haven't been able to get a fair market value of the shares from them and I don't see the opportunity for them going public or being acquired any time soon.

"After nearly a year of using HN every day for several hours a day.."

What would that time be worth if spent building a product or service? Either for yourself or someone else that paid you for that time? I'd wager you'd learn more focusing on more productive efforts than you could from reading anything here. (and I'm a fan of HN)

itbeho··on ‘Rust’ crew describes on-set gun safety issues and misfires days before shooting
If that were indeed the case, then Baldwin could have determined it was actually loaded easily with just a few seconds of inspection after having been handed the firearm.

Most actors receive training with firearms so they can handle and fire them convincingly on set. Baldwin has made a several films where he handled firearms, so I'm certain he's had safety training at points in his career. Taking someone's word for it being a "cold gun" is irresponsible.

itbeho··on Ask HN: Which book or course gave you an unfair advantage?
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Carnegie. Old but great for an introvert on the spectrum like me. Human nature doesn't change, but I still don't understand it.

Functional Web Development with Elixir, OTP, and Phoenix: Rethink the Modern Web App by Lance Halvorsen

Elixir and Phoenix have been fantastic for my productivity. I had a fairly short, but steep learning curve in the early days, but LiveView is amazing and replaces quite a bit of client side javascript that previously felt redundant to me. I've been getting a quicker time to completion, and correspondingly being paid faster than when I was working with more traditional stacks like Django or Rails.

itbeho··on Ask HN: Who doesn’t want to go back to the office?
I'm enjoying it while it lasts.... pretty sure it won't last.

Human nature and micro-managers will get back on top of things in short order.

itbeho··on Setting up Starlink
Not the person you replied to, but off-grid doesn't mean no power. I have an off-grid cabin with enough solar capacity to run my laptop, as well as quite a few other things. I'm looking forward to getting Starlink there myself. It's a fantastic, quiet place to work with no opportunity for interruptions.
itbeho··on Major employers scrap plans to cut back on offices – KPMG
As the pandemic eases, I suspect we'll see a bigger return to the office than expected.

The biggest driver will be human nature. Political machinations that work in person for self gain do not necessarily work with WFH. I'm already hearing some FOMO as people that work in the office are promoted over people working remotely.

itbeho··on NASA's Perseverance rover sends stunning images
"And we made it to Mars! I stepped out of the lander and took a look around. It turns out the place is just a bunch of rusty looking rocks. No hot green chicks, no angry little green men. I guess I was kind of hoping there would have been someone here to shoot it out with, or at least make out with."

- From the unpublished short fiction of itbeho

Seriously though, this is fantastic. Imagine being a kid today, seeing these images and being inspired to help get us there in person, hopefully in the near future.

itbeho··on Investors double down on stocks, pushing margin debt to record
One COVID related transfer of wealth involves the Paycheck Protection Program. I know of several local profitable small businesses that received loans through this program. They were never in a position to layoff workers. When those loans are forgiven, as most are, or will be, where does that money go? Right in to the owner's pocket. It's interesting how many law firms qualified...
itbeho··on Elon Musk moves to Texas
At last count I've had 14 friends move out of California in the last 3 years. All of them middle class. The biggest reasons given are cost of living and quality of life and education for their kids.
itbeho··on Ask HN: Have you picked up any new skill from scratch in your 40s or later?
Sewing. First to make masks for the family. I then made sail and varnish covers for my boat. I broke my wife's domestic machine in the process (still recovering from that beating), but have graduated to sturdier machines and projects. I make a lined pouch out of up-cycled materials that seems to go over well with friends. I made a backpack that is my take on a Goruck GR1, but with a more slender profile and lighter weight while keeping the rugged exterior. I flirt with the idea of starting a cut-and-sew operation for custom backpacks at some point.

itbeho··on The California DMV Is Selling Drivers’ Personal Information
A couple of years ago my elderly neighbor asked me to drive him to the local DMV for an appointment with an examiner in order to have his driving privileges restored. He'd experienced a brief medical problem but had recovered and had signed letters from his doctors giving him the all clear.

The examiner asked all the questions you'd want to have asked to ensure public safety. Everything seemed to be going well. But, apparently at that point, the examiner noticed my friends political affiliation on his screen and lost his shit over it, angrily impugning him in ways that were hostile and unprofessional. I had to walk out of his office into the main lobby and ask for a supervisor. I hope that was a one-off situation; A low level bureaucrat having a bad day. But the fact that a small bit of personal data could be used against a person in that way is troubling.
