it_citizen··on I can see AI genuinely amending or even curing the male loneliness epidemic soon
Why singling out male loneliness?

Are females less lonely?

Could it help with both?

Genuinely asking, I don’t know much on the topic.

it_citizen··on Department of Justice says Boeing may be criminally liable in 737 MAX crashes
You can do the next best thing.

Get a very expensive defense team. There are too many instances of people who bought their freedom that way.

it_citizen··on Super Mario 64's unopenable door has been opened [video]
This youtube channel is great. I highly recommend to look at their other videos if you like Mario 64.
it_citizen··on Why Is the Sea So Hot?
This video is one of the most scary thing I have watched on climate change. I have been thinking about it since it was published. I have read Michael Mann’s answer to James Hansen and that didn’t make me feel any better.

I am really waiting to have more people looking into it.

it_citizen··on School lunch breaks in France can be two hours (2012)
Now do the same argument with Boeing vs Airbus :)
it_citizen··on Florida House of Representatives approves bill to ban social media for kids < 16
Should we apply the same reasoning for banning kids from buying alcohol or firearms then?
it_citizen··on Sam Altman Says AI Using Too Much Energy Will Require Breakthrough Energy Source
I have found some legit use cases for generative AI at least.
it_citizen··on 23andMe tells victims it's their fault that their data was breached
Remember that when you are giving your DNA to a company, you are also partly doing it for all your family members. Maybe talk about it with them before doing it, especially if it is just for fun.
it_citizen··on Meta censors pro-Palestinian views on a global scale, report claims
So you would kill civilians, women and children on a "maybe" and would indiscriminately judge 500k people the same way.
it_citizen··on No evidence screen time is negative for child cognitive development, well-being
Not sure why you are being downvoted. I can see a pretty strong correlation between the parents who have the will to not simplify their lives by putting kids in front of the TV and parents who will do more than the average parent for their kids to be well-educated.
it_citizen··on No evidence screen time is negative for child cognitive development, well-being
I forgot where I read that but I remember a neuroscientist studying the impact of TV on learning abilities saying that it is much better to leave a child in a silent room with no stimulation and a dumb toy than putting them in front of a TV program with a lot of cuts and making loud noises. It interrupts their thought process every time there is an abrupt visual or audio change and the baby thinking is reset.
it_citizen··on Teddy Roosevelt pursues the boat thieves (2015)
I think I took note of that exact passage:

> Some insult to do with the pea jacket (legend quotes it as “Won’t Mamma’s boy catch cold?”) caused Roosevelt to flare up. “Teddy knocked him down,” Hunt recalled admiringly, “and he got up and he hit him again, and when he got up he hit him again, and he said, ‘Now you go over there and wash yourself. There was a broken chair in the room, and I got a leg of it loose and put it down beside me where it was not visible, but where I might get at it in a hurry if necessary I then put the bill in my pocket and announced that I would report it anyhow. This almost precipitated a riot, especially when I explained … that I suspected that the men holding up all report of the bill were holding it up for purposes of blackmail. The riot did not come off; partly, I think, because the opportune production of the chair-leg had a sedative effect, and partly owing to wise counsels from one or two of my opponents.

If you haven't already, read The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. One of the best biographies I have ever read.
it_citizen··on Rogue superintelligence: Inside the mind of OpenAI's chief scientist

it_citizen··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
> Let this be a lesson, don’t have a wacky ownership structure and wacky board when you have the (perhaps) the most valuable product in the world.

If your goal is to make money. I'd like to believe that for some of the people pushing the field forward, there are other motivations.

it_citizen··on How to Fathom Climate Change's Unfathomable Numbers
I read that chapter just before a heat dome settled over the pacific north west.

Climate change had never felt so real to me.

it_citizen··on How to Fathom Climate Change's Unfathomable Numbers
Global temperature increase doesn't mean it gets warmer everywhere and anytime. Weather will just become more extreme and there is a good chance that more people will die from harsher winters too.

it_citizen··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
So does that mean the video would exclude honest mistakes from the researchers? Either it is indeed a superconductor at room temperature or the makers of video actively faked the result.
it_citizen··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
Can someone ELI5 if the video with the magnet levitating is supposed prove something? Is this visual result only possible with superconductors? If so, why?
it_citizen··on Crucial system of ocean currents is collapsing; ‘affects everyone on the planet’
> Goll’s team used a land surface model to the simulate the effects of applying 5 kg/m2 of basalt dust over a vegetated area of 55 million square kilometres (about one third of the land on Earth). They found it has the potential to remove 2.5 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, where roughly half was stored in the biomass.

Am I misunderstanding something?

We emitted 37 billion tons in 2021.

This solution would offset 2.5 billion tons (~7%) of our annual emissions. And to do that we would need to put 5KG of basalt per square meter on 1/3 of all land available on earth. Isn't it completely crazy and unrealistic?

it_citizen··on GPT-4 API General Availability
Thanks, that’s interesting.

Noobie follow up question: Should we put any trust into “Sparks of intelligence” I thought it was regarded as a Microsoft marketing piece, not a serious paper.

it_citizen··on GPT-4 API General Availability
I keep reading “GPT4 got nerfed” but I have been using from day 1, and while it definitely gives bad answers, I cannot say that it was nerfed for sure.

Is there any actual evidences other than some user subjective experiences?

A really good read: “The mom test” to teach you how to conduct customer interview. There is a lot of things to learn from it that I did not suspected but that are really important.
it_citizen··on All EU Members are committed to achieving full climate neutrality by 2050
The CBAM should be a good first step to twist China and US arm into pricing their carbon as it should be.
it_citizen··on All EU Members are committed to achieving full climate neutrality by 2050
The earth absorbs carbon through different mechanisms, although a lot of them are getting close to saturation.
