istvan__··on Why I am pro-GPL
free·dom ˈfrēdəm/Submit noun the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.

I don't think that restraining what the users can do or have to do while using your "free" software can hold up against the definition of freedom.

I think what you are talking about is the moral superiority here, you are thinking that you are in a better position to define freedom for users that is different from the definition in the dictionary. This is pretty common patter in the society nowadays. Anyways, I am sticking to the original definition. :)

istvan__··on Why I am pro-GPL
Exactly as you said, if you want to use GPL you have to do something, while if you want to use BSDL you don't. Surprisingly the definition of freedom:

"the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint."

Now you tell me which of these licenses are closer to the definition.

istvan__··on Why I am pro-GPL
It is psychological, for some of us freedom means I authored this piece of code and if you want to use it you do what I say aka GPL.

For some other people it means that here, I wrote it and you use it as you want to use it aka BSDL.

I am more likely to side with BSDL guys on this one, I do not want to do anything other than use a free software as free software if it is branded as free software. :)

istvan__··on Why I am pro-GPL
"Stallman created the GPL because he cared about user freedom."

vs.

"The GPL attempts to force people and businesses to release their source code. There is nothing wrong with that, except I don't think it qualifies as "free software". I want anybody to be able to do anything they want with my programs and/or its source code."[1]

And I agree pretty much with the latter.

istvan__··on LAX becomes largest U.S. airport to allow Uber, Lyft pickups
Not to mention the absolute lack of _usable_ public transportation. It is laughable what they got there compare to any major city in China for example.
istvan__··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
Could I or could anybody? Funny you mention ad hominem and targeting the question to me, implying that I use slurs and ad hominems. :)

I seriously don't care if somebody is smart and I have something to learn I will regardless of her style, slurs or whatever. I learned that in primary school where I was exposed to underpaid teachers who hated everybody who was smart. :)

istvan__··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
Gaining knowledge for example. What is the point of interacting with others if you continuously offended?
istvan__··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
You are saying we need censorship. Growing up in a country that had very strict censorship rules I can tell you two things:

- it never works because people just simply fool the censors with twisting words the right way so the censors don't understand it but the smarter readers do. Entire genre was created for this sort of stuff in my country.

- just by trying to censor people you are pushing many different groups to the same platform and they gonna overthrow the ruling class anyways because together they are stronger and they are going to get rid of censorship. Look at the history for some countries with censorship.

On the top of that, how will define what safe means? This is really a double edge sword.

Please watch this video, this sums up pretty nicely my opinion:

Guys who disagree: I do not care about karma loss because representing a non-popular view on things, but if you take the effort to downvote please have the courage to put a comment in as well.

istvan__··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
This is exactly right. Reasoning ends when the feelings start. I am not even sure if I understand -btw. usually attributed to religious people- the concept of getting offended. If somebody says something you don't like and you don't want to hear just walk away, close the tab, delete the email.
istvan__··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
Like other people display Obama as a non-american, Donald Trump as Hitler and so on. As a public character you should be able to handle that.
istvan__··on Ellen Pao: The Trolls Are Winning the Battle for the Internet
You mistakenly think that all of the people who signed the petition (~200,000 people) are from the fat shaming subreddit.
istvan__··on Users Rationally Rejecting Security Advice (2009)
Yes I was just pointing out that not only the advice giving part is bad but also the practices that even banks follow today are harmful.
istvan__··on Users Rationally Rejecting Security Advice (2009)
Instead of giving them an advice, we who understand how it works should make these things defaults and not let them exposed. What can the users do in a world where banks are asking you to read the CC details loudly in a phone conversation and give them all the details over the phone. Next thing is that there is a fake call from a criminal organization pretending to be the bank. How would a user detect that it is fake? I think security should be about rules and enforced practices rather than advices that they can happily ignore.
istvan__··on New Horizons: Nasa spacecraft speeds past Pluto
Would you mind explaining to me what sort of competition was the Chinese empire facing when they invented the compass?

Just want to point out the fallacy in your logic.

istvan__··on Immutable annotations for Java
Absolutely, I need to learn about Kotlik, it almost looks like Scala at the first glance.

I agree with you about languages and targeting 10+ years with it. Stability is worth more than anything to me, out of the box performance also important (this tend to be great for older languages) not to mention the std library quality. For these reasons Java is an excellent choice.

Clojure came to me as a total surprise, since I haven't studied CS and because I was surrounded with Perl/Java engineers for a long time I haven't heard about Lisp till 2011. It changed my approach to software engineering a lot. It is absolutely eye opening, mind blowing and all that jazz.

istvan__··on Immutable annotations for Java
There is such a thing but the scope is usually limited to a problem, a project, a department or a company. A good example would be OCaml and Jane Street for the latter.
istvan__··on Immutable annotations for Java
Well I might have given you the impression that I am a Clojure zealot. This is not true at all. I program in Ruby, Python, Java, Erlang, Go and OCaml on the top of Clojure. The only reason I prefer the later it because I can use the same minimal syntax to target 2 VMs and that is a huge win. It is also fun to show people the power of Lisp time to time, but that is it. If my manager or team asks me to write code in a random language I am going to learn it and do it, but for personal projects I tend to use Clojure. This is all.
istvan__··on Immutable annotations for Java
True, how about starting with the right language? :) I only write Clojure for both JVM and JS. Works like a charm. The only problem is when you need to work in a team and nobody does anything else but Java and JS.
istvan__··on Immutable annotations for Java
Scala, is that you?? :)
istvan__··on New York Times' Reddit Piece Shows Dangers of Internet Journalism
"Edit: Yep. Downvoted without discussion. Brilliant. We're really encouraging debates here..."

Common practice here nowadays. You have to be ready to take a hit in your karma if you bring up a viewpoint that is not widely accepted here. Kind of makes me sad.

Anyways back to your points, this is exactly right. Ellen Pao fired Victoria for no good reason and NYT conclusion -> she is hated because she is a female. I can't find words to describe this level of hypocrisy. I am pretty sure that there are people who disliked her due to sheer misogyny but 200.000 people signed that petition. You don't need to be extremely good with math to understand that those people cannot just all be like that.

Anyways, I agree with you that fabricating things like this article is extremely bad, btw. this is what Chomsky calls manufacturing consent, and he is damn right about it.

istvan__··on New York Times' Reddit Piece Shows Dangers of Internet Journalism
Thanks for sharing, next time somebody tells me news are not fabricated I just pull this up! :)
istvan__··on Denmark’s wind farms generated 140% of the country’s electricity needs yesterday
He is wrong, but so everybody who thinks that wind generated energy by itself is the future.

The electrical grid has some very serious limitations that most of the people are not aware of. For example you cannot recover from a blackout scenario without electricity. Only very few power plants are able to do that, the most common types are nuclear plants.

Another lesser known fact is that any windmill you put in your system requires a fossil based turbine as well to be able to control the surges and dips in the power production.

On the top of that, most of the windmills are not suitable for being placed for human population based on the frequency of sound they produce.

I think the future is clean nuclear power and some renewable sources.

istvan__··on Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief
Any link or should I just believe you? I really like to believe everything I read on the internet btw. :)
istvan__··on Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief
What about it? If you are a public figure these are pretty common. On the same ground, would you go an extra mile like this post when somebody comparing donald trump to hitler? Your political bias goes both ways...
istvan__··on Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief
I am opening a bottle of champagne and at the same time answer my own question: it took 3 weeks for the community to get rid off a tyrant. Well done Reddit!

Friendly reminder that if you are using downvotes for disagreement than you are doing it wrong.

istvan__··on We apologize
I guess they had a look to the key performance numbers at Reddit after the blackouts, and finally understand that Reddit with new regime control kills popularity, sub-reddits going black can cause a pretty visible dip in the visitor stats. I guess this happens when you move from community driven to profit driven with a site like Reddit.
