It's amusing that the form demanding this "about" field is a dead end with no links to anything relevant to what generated the click.

istillwritecode··on How long it took different companies to find product-market fit
Google went about two years until they showed their first ad. They initially thought they would be providing search to companies for their intranet.
istillwritecode··on Scammers can exploit email forwarding flaws to impersonate high-profile domains
It's surprising that the paper doesn't even mention SRS (Sender Rewrite Scheme).
istillwritecode··on Authentication on meet.jit.si
I just stopped using it. I can understand that they might have had problems with abuse, but I won't use any of their authentication options.
istillwritecode··on Uncured bacon isn't any healthier in terms of nitrites and nitrates
Bacon is the candy of the meat family.
istillwritecode··on Google's browser security plan slammed as dangerous, terrible, DRM for websites
Essentially all browsers are ad-supported, including Firefox.
istillwritecode··on Chinese Cars Are Good Now and We All Need to Get Used to It
I'm old enough to remember when people said they would never buy a Japanese car because of the lingering resentment over WW2.Some people won't buy Fords because of his alleged anti-Semitism. Some people won't buy Teslas. Times change but many people cling to their biases.
istillwritecode··on What Alan Turing means to us
I like how he tried to disprove the Riemann Hypothesis. That's actually how I first heard of Alan Turing, by seeing his paper on the subject. https://www-users.cse.umn.edu/~odlyzko/doc/turing.zeta.pdf
istillwritecode··on Goodbye, Twilio
I was a twilio customer developer until they instituted a change that demanded to know my personal phone number in order to login to their account. They claimed this was for security, but TOTP doesn't require a phone number. After a meeting with their engineering staff, I realized that they completely screwed up their TOTP implementation and they needed the phone number as the seed. Since I wasn't going to give them my phone number, that brought our customer relationship to an end. They clearly had no idea how to spell the word privacy.
istillwritecode··on Reddit Strike Has Started
I will continue to use reddit.
istillwritecode··on Thousands of subreddits pledge to go dark after the Reddit CEO’s recent remarks
Don't forget that the vast majority of users don't use third party apps.
istillwritecode··on An Example of a Sad Google Account Recovery Failure and Its Effects
I fully expect to someday lose access to my gmail account because I regularly delete cookies and I won't give them a phone number. If they won't accept a password as proof of ownership on an account, then the account will someday be dead.
istillwritecode··on Google Introduces Passkey Authentication
I assume the goal is to keep people logged in. The bullshit reason is to get rid of passwords. I have passwords that are strong and 20 years old, so I regard passkey as evil.
istillwritecode··on You and Your Research (1986)
Richard Hamming used to travel around and give that talk at every university he visited. I was lucky enough to hear him speak during my PhD studies around 1980.
istillwritecode··on What it feels like to work in AI right now
I continue to be underwhelmed by the impact of machine learning (which some people refer to as AI). It certainly has interesting applications, and I expect it be important as a generator of entertainment. I'm just tired of the repeated waves of hype the surround the field.
istillwritecode··on Show HN: SiteGPT – Create ChatGPT-like chatbots trained on your website content
I'll pay attention to these things when they are open source instead of a service.
istillwritecode··on Scaled-Down California Bullet Train Project $10B over Budget
There are ridership estimates but I am very skeptical. Fares are expected to be 80% of airfares but airfares to Fresno aren't cheap.
istillwritecode··on ChatGPT's API is so good and cheap, it makes most text generating AI obsolete
I will no longer give my phone number to a cloud provider. Count me out.
istillwritecode··on Has the generative AI pricing collapse already started?
The products they offer don't have wide appeal, though they keep technology enthusiasts amused.
istillwritecode··on Enough Empty Office Space for 160k People in San Francisco
No tolerance for drugs? So you're going to outlaw bars? Maybe you haven't heard but marijuana is legal, and not all drugs are the same.
istillwritecode··on We tried to run a social media site and it was awful
ft.com epitomizes what is wrong with web, with a big ass modal about cookies that only goes away if you accept their cookies. I would be happy to see such sites go bankrupt because they piss of so many potential readers who won't see their ads.
istillwritecode··on It's time to stop texting
It's time to stop using medium for your blogging. I won't sign up for an account to read stuff - the world already has too many accounts.

I get that the author doesn't want to use SMS. I mostly use signal, but I sometimes use SMS to communicate with people who prefer it. I won't use whatsapp or telegram, for no particular reason other than I don't have to. Some of my friends contact me via twitter messaging - that's even worse in my opinion.

istillwritecode··on The Prisoner
I'm probably one of the few users here who saw it when it first came out.
istillwritecode··on Ask HN: LaTeX is great. Has anyone tried to build something better?
I've used TeX since the 80s. I also find it surprising that nothing has come along to replace it. The entire LaTeX ecosystem is showing its age, and one of the problems is that it is not designed for reading on variable width screens. TeX is all about typesetting on fixed-width pages. The real wizardry of LaTeX involves three things: 1. line and page breaks 2. hyphenation 3. mathematical typesetting.

The first two are much less important today than they were in the 80s, because an increasing amount of reading is done on screens that are not fixed width. It's noteworthy that bibtex is also showing its age, and biblatex has not been a completely successful replacement.

istillwritecode··on Aging programmer
You're only 40? Hold my beer. I'm 68.
istillwritecode··on Saying goodbye to my parents’ library
Don't worry. They are flammable.
istillwritecode··on Former world champion reveals that she was ordered to lose Olympic semi-final
A perfect reminder of what a shitshow the web has become.
istillwritecode··on Twilio incident: What Signal users need to know
I gave signal my landline. They don't need SMS.
istillwritecode··on A Possible Fix for Scientific Publishing
Reviewing is not the cause of the economic problems in academic publishing. The economic problems arise from the car at of copy and production editing. That's where the money goes. See https://f1000research.com/articles/10-20
istillwritecode··on Connect-Web: TypeScript library for calling RPC servers from web browsers
Typescript: uh no.
istillwritecode··on Google’s in-house desktop Linux
I'm a linux user for over 25 years. I want my development environment to match production and that almost never involves new software.
