is_it_worth_it_··on Why Tech Degrees Are Not Putting More Blacks and Hispanics into Tech Jobs
I'm not a troll, I believe this. I'm actually baffled that people can't see how obvious it is. I'm highly credentialed/successful in the tech industry. In the case that I have no intelligence what so ever, explain this comment you have linked. To me, he's pointing out some obscure fact, that not all Africans look the same. Fine, but 95%+ do, can we argue about the general concept? Or do I have to be confined to spelling and grammar mistake arguments? Along with nitpicking? Personal insults?

Fair enough, but do you have an argument against what I am saying?

It's actually a little embarrassing how much I know about the topic. I find evolution interesting. The more I study and understand, the more I am astounded by people's chosen ignorance on this topic. It's a harsh reality with far reaching consequences. But living as if it isnt true is just as harmful to our society. As things progress it will be increasingly hard to cover up and ignore. I am very curious what will happen at that point.

"Whatever role genetics play in IQ are most certainly not manifested in the concentration of melanin in one's skin or the coarseness of one's hair or the color of one's eyes or the size of one's nose or any of the other crude heuristics we use to group people up as "races"."

You are making the case that intraracial facial structures all resemble each other, but internally how people are connected (brain structure) does not follow the same pattern. Some how over thousands of years of almost complete seperation, people managed to genetically grow different facial strucutres but stayed completely the same on the inside? The whole tenant of evolution is that great effective genes are passed on and reflected in offspring. By arguing that there is no genetic difference you are arguing that IQ cannot be passed on and that different environments did not select for and need different levels of IQ. If you are arguing that, then you are denying evolution as a theory.

Really? Scientifically it has been proven over and over. It just isn't mainstream.

Since when is it cool to brag about what drugs you have done? You must still be in college/high school.

is_it_worth_it_··on Do Elite Colleges Lead to Higher Salaries? Only for Some Professions
I don't, I'm just saying a huge majority of elite high paying jobs are filled by top ten degrees.
is_it_worth_it_··on Do Elite Colleges Lead to Higher Salaries? Only for Some Professions
Right, but a phd is a different case than a bachelors. UT Austin is also a solid school.

True but that guy probably got hired to shuffle data around, work on build systems, or A/B test the color of a button on a web page. He's not writing google's predictive advertising algorithms.

I know a good amount about the tech scene in nyc. It works like this, you can get paid a bunch by google or fb, maybe amazon. Sure if you make it in as a state school college grad you get paid. But developers in finance working on the actual trading models who make 300k+ almost exclusively went to top schools. Look at a front office development team at any quant fund.
is_it_worth_it_··on Do Elite Colleges Lead to Higher Salaries? Only for Some Professions
College degree matters way more than people like to admit. It matters in tech. If you get hired at google out of CMU, you are going to work in a better group with higher salary than a state school grad. Most elite finance jobs require a top degree, as do consulting, and business development/strategy groups at large companies. Any sort of investing job requires a good pedigree. Such a myth to pretend otherwise. Ofcourse there are outliers, but by and large top jobs go to top degrees, regardless of who is better than who.

I should make it clear im talking about jobs that pay 300k+. Below that and it isnt a highly selective enough for top pedigree to be such a huge deal.

Right, but its likely the people replaced here wrote ETL jobs and corporate web pages.
is_it_worth_it_··on Lawsuits Claim Disney Colluded to Replace U.S. Workers with Immigrants
This is the future of the technology industry. There is no fighting it, you cannot fight with the forces of the free market. The salary differential between US based tech workers and foreign workers is too high. If the products you are working on require no innovation or real skill, as is likely with these disney positions, they will be outsourced.
is_it_worth_it_··on Tech faces hour of reckoning as fundraising drops, layoffs rise
Right, but startups do employ large numbers of competent engineers. VC money drying up means those engineers start competing for the same jobs. Quantitative easing has caused stock prices to rise, mainly tech stocks. This means tech companies can offer absurd salaries via stock to compete for talent. This drives up salary across the industry. If their stock goes down, as it will with rising interest rates and market downward forces, they will pay less for top engineers. This will have industry wide effects.

Less VC money means less demand for engineers. Less demand for engineers means dropping wages. Higher levels of outsourcing and H1Bs also means dropping wages. American engineers though "scarce" will see a significant drop in wages, salaries in this field are going to collapse. They were being propped up by the government printing money, thus pushing up tech companies stock and pushing up VC money. With all that money no longer circulating, we will see wages go down.
