iruoy··on Chrome's New AI Features
Funny how this announcement comes days after Google learned that it didn't need to sell Chrome
iruoy··on Paid $2400 to Cloudflare, support refuses to help

iruoy··on Apple has a private CSS property to add Liquid Glass effects to web content
> It stands to reason that Apple wouldn't have developed this feature if they weren't using it. Where? We have no idea. But they must be using it somewhere. The fact that none of us have noticed exactly where suggests that we're interacting with webviews in our daily use of iOS without ever even realising it.

This is what stood out to me. I've never really suspected webviews and can't think of a place now.

iruoy··on Popular Linux orgs Freedesktop and Alpine Linux are scrambling for new webhost
They did the calculations for Hetzner themselves and came to $4258.33/mo.
iruoy··on MailCatcher runs a super simple SMTP server
There's no rush to move away from MailCatcher or MailHog, but if you're not using those solutions already I see no reason to use them over the maintained options.
iruoy··on MailCatcher runs a super simple SMTP server
A tool like this is very useful, but this one isn't being maintained anymore. MailHog isn't either.

MailPit, MailCrab and smtp4dev are modern alternatives.

iruoy··on Cloudflare rolls out feature for blocking AI companies' web scrapers
See https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40865627 for cloudflare's blogpost.
iruoy··on Dashboard and UIs for Node-Red
> The original Node-RED Dashboard is based on Angular v1, which is no longer maintained. Although small patches have been and will continue to be applied on a "best can do" basis, there will be no major feature upgrades. The lack of ongoing maintenance and updates has the potential to lead to underlying security breakages, a risk we are not comfortable taking. We have recognized the need to innovate and adapt, which is why we are creating a completely new project to replace the existing Node-RED Dashboard.

iruoy··on Google Meet rolls out multi-device adaptive audio merging
That would be against net neutrality laws here in The Netherlands, but we also get low bitrates when screensharing.

But Google Meet is pretty good otherwise. Zoom is good too. All others I have used have been quite annoying to use.

iruoy··on Running PHP fast at the edge with WebAssembly
opcache doessn't cache user data. it's for caching bytecode in memory as long as the php script/server is running

i'd like to see a comparison against a firecracker vm and a docker container

iruoy··on How to make a better default Firefox UI
It takes 2 minutes and the instructions are very clear. Should not be a problem.

This is the first time I've heard of Lepton. Now I've installed it I don't think I will go back. Thanks!

I don't care about the tabs being buttons though. Mainly the huge amount of space the new design uses. And the lack of icons.

iruoy··on Goody-2, the world's most responsible AI model
How did you get the prompt?
iruoy··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
On the https://one.google.com/about/plans page they named the subscription AI Premium. It's the same as Premium, but you get access to Gemini Advanced too. However I'm not sure where you can use it at the moment. Maybe just Bard?
iruoy··on Zed, a collaborative code editor, is now open source
All JetBrains IDEs work on Linux and all electron apps of course. Lapce seems like Zed and is already available on Linux. So is Sublime Text.

There's a whole list here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_of_applications/Docume...

iruoy··on Apple Music will now pay 10% higher royalties to artists for Spatial Audio music
I've tried it before on AirPods Max and wasnt' that impressed. But just yesterday I've tried it on a very nice home cinema. Some songs seem basically auto-generated, but some songs have a very cool surround mix. It's a bit of a gamble right now what you'll get. Either is a fun experience though.

So I think the technology is quite cool and I will use it again. It won't be very often though, because all my regular listening areas/devices are stereo.

iruoy··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
NIO now has 9 battery swap locations in The Netherlands. I'm not sure this is better than charging points, but at least we'll get some data on it. Tom Scott has made a video[1] about it.

iruoy··on Apple tells EU it has five different App Stores, not just one
Well on macOS you're free to use whatever. On iOS and iPadOS Apple demands apps to use the Safari engine (WebKit).

So they are a gatekeeper on iOS and iPadOS, but not on macOS.

iruoy··on Benchmarking 20 programming languages on N-queens and matrix multiplication
I've just done this and it has been merged. The benchmarks table and image haven't been updated yet. But this should bring the C# result to ~2s instead of 4.67s
iruoy··on Forecasts need to have error bars
I've been using meteoblue for a while now and they tell you how sure they are of their predictions. Right now I can see that they rate their predictability as medium for tomorrow, but high for the day after.

iruoy··on Some Pirate Sites Received More Visitors After Being Blocked
With the current trends in streaming piracy must be on the rise again. Are there any numbers on that? Ideally plotted against streaming subscriber numbers
iruoy··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
Doesn't that go for almost all paid web services? At least the incentive is low, and the potential backlash is high.
iruoy··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
Kagi in Dutch has been very good.

The last thing I've still been using Google for was looking up which Dutch retailers sold the product I was looking for. But now I see that was unnecessary.

iruoy··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
You can get unlimited email domains/accounts for $19/year. Assuming you don't receive more than 200 emails a day.
