ironhaven··on The unnecessary decline of U.S. numerical weather prediction
You can draw a strong connection from in 2019[1] when the USDA allowed slaughterhouses to self inspect to the recent listeria outbreaks.

ironhaven··on Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas go on strike
Who will train the replacments if you have fired all the trained workers. I don’t think there is an alternate pool of experienced unemployed longshoremen to hire from. That is a lot of experience you would give up that would take a months/years to get back to regular levels of productivity .

That’s why in the good old days you hire Pinkertons to use physical violence to intimidate and break up the unions so you can keep the workers. Much easier than replacing thousands of skilled workers

ironhaven··on Show HN: Hosting my website using my C web server
Http/1.1 is dead simple if you ignore most of the spec. If you only take get requests and set content-length on response you will be good for 99% of user agents. It’s not much more code to handle the transfer-encoding and byte-range headers. HTTPS is just http over a tls socket which is the level of abstraction you should have if you don’t roll your own crypto.

It’s fun and not that bad really.

ironhaven··on OpenAI Threatening to Ban Users for Asking Strawberry About Its Reasoning
“Apple is one of the most open companies there is because they want everyone to buy their products”
ironhaven··on Does your startup need complex cloud infrastructure?
Ah there's your problem. Don't use IIS on Windows Server 2008!
ironhaven··on Notes on OpenAI's new o1 chain-of-thought models
So is o1 nicknamed “strawberry” because it was designed to solve the “how many many times does the letter R appear in strawberry” problem.
ironhaven··on Our Git Hash Bug
In video gamer parlance any non human predictable output or action gets called "RNG". Anything from true random loot drops to deterministic but chaotic systems can be called "RNG". This the blog title they describe the exact resulting git hash as having the quality of being RNG because you can't really predict if your git rev hash will have a certain characters. They got unlucky and triggered a bug from the chaotic git hash.
ironhaven··on There Is No Website
Note for Firefox users, the "cat video" section is not working, and you will not be able to experience the rest of the app. You are supposed to break the player in a Google Gravity[1] like fashion, but it's broken. They should not "highly" recommend using chrome, but just say it does not work on other browsers.

ironhaven··on RP2350 PicoDVI Preview
What kind of retro computing are you doing that would work well with high definition (720p). Standard definition I believe only started to be limited around 2007 when Xbox games like Dead Rising had captions that where too small to be legible on SD tvs
ironhaven··on Black Mesa
Black Mesa in the game was more high energy physics/interdimensional travel not anything medical like on the website. Both topics could be under the “mad science” label
ironhaven··on DEF CON's response to the badge controversy
DEF CON as a hacking convention has a long tradition of sometimes instead of giving printed name tags during registration like normal conferences but printed circuit boards with microcontrollers and firmware (aka software).

Some years had ctf challenges in the firmware this year there was a playable game boy emulator.

ironhaven··on Nearly 2/3 of Home Listings Have Been Sitting on the Market Longer Than a Month
"It's not a loss if you don't sell" is harmless for stocks, but has some negative externalities for real estate. REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) demonstrate the issue for commercial real estate where in order to lower the rent for a property the newest shareholders have to give up their shares. So instead of lowering the rent and recording a loss, junior shareholders would prefer to own a part of an empty lot hoping a business will come along and start renting.

Having millions of empty houses near millions of homeless people is a direct result of real estate owners trying to maximize the value of their assets. The solution to this would be to find a way to decommoditize housing, but that would never happen because that's socialism. Land value tax may be an easier jump to disincentive this inefficiency.

ironhaven··on Managarm: Pragmatic microkernel-based OS with asynchronous I/O
There is Redox written in rust. https://gitlab.redox-os.org/redox-os/redox
ironhaven··on What's so hard about constexpr allocation?
It doesn't, you can not dynamically allocate memory in const functions even temporally. Rust was designed with the benefit of hindsight, so the well understood parts of const evaluation are stable and don't paint the syntax in a corner requiring `constexpr` and `consteval` keywords in the future.
ironhaven··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
So the illegal immigration issue is not important to you for its economics affects or changes to quality of life but just due to your fear of the other. Thank you for making your priorities more clear.
ironhaven··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
Your argument seems to be that a larger population leads to lower wages, which seems very reductive. Please elaborate
ironhaven··on US intelligence community is embracing generative AI
In 2024, it is less controversial to accuse the US government of lying than generative AI models
ironhaven··on Scientists re-emerge after a year in Mars simulation project
The question is whether it will be like Usenet with nntp or a BBS with xmodem
ironhaven··on Why we no longer use LangChain for building our AI agents
Open AI when they gave press access to gpt said that you must not publish the raw output for AI safety reasons. So naturally people self selected the best outputs to share.
ironhaven··on Evolving the Go Standard Library with math/rand/v2
You have written a deterministic function. If you test this function with all 4 billion uint32 on one odd interval, go and count the number of times you get each result. Now look at your results, are all of the numbers equally likely or is there bias towards some outputs?

Ps: it looks like your function is exclusive like [0,N) not [0,N] Also your function is described in this blog post https://www.pcg-random.org/posts/bounded-rands.html

ironhaven··on The server chose violence
I think when B gets faulted A would get an error about a dead server and would have the opportunity resend the same message to a newly reset server not a cascading crash.
ironhaven··on Unraveling Havana syndrome: New evidence implicates the GRU's assassination unit
Did you reply to the wrong message? You are not the OP
ironhaven··on New open source GPU is free to all
PC Gaming is the last group of consumers who pay for software that does not run in a web browser.

If you are interested in the continuation of personal computing on open platforms, don't leave out gamers.

ironhaven··on What if serverless meant no backend servers?
I guess the name “serverless” was already taken ;)
ironhaven··on SVG images can contain JavaScript
If anybody wants to see an intended use of javascript in SVG images take a look at flamegraph profiles[1]. Very useful to find program hotspots when you can click to focus on particular code paths.

ironhaven··on Identifying Rust's collect:<Vec<_>>() memory leak footgun
Another rust type you should look out for is Box<str>In my rust code I find a lot more uses of Box<str> rather than Box<[T]>. Strings are often fixed length identifiers or usernames that get passed around frequently and stored in data structures. Box<str> can be a drop-in replacement in a surprising amount of code
ironhaven··on 2023: The Year of AI
You are only allowed to criticize Open AI if you are paying a monthly subscription to Open AI
ironhaven··on SSH3: SSHv2 using HTTP/3 and QUIC
Unless you can use an off the shelf http client to make ssh connections I can’t think of a benefit for using http headers vs non-http key value pairs.
ironhaven··on SSH3: SSHv2 using HTTP/3 and QUIC
Why is there http/3 in the middle? SSH over QUIC makes a lot of sense and was something I thought about before.

The SSH protocol is designed to multiplex many “channels” over an encrypted tcp socket. Over each channel you can run things like a shell or SFTP.

It would need some engineering but you could keep the same SSH features but replace the multiplexing channels over tcp with QUIC channels over udp. Where does HTTP/3 fit in besides to add overhead?

ironhaven··on Is there an updated list for verified good USB-C cables?
Maybe I am just lucky but I don’t need a lot from my usb c cables and have not had issues. The minimum requirements for a c-c cable according to the standard is USB 2.0 data and 3A/60W fast charging. Every cable I have bought has preformed at least to that standard so usb c has treated me well.
