ique··on Ask HN: Please review my node.js fun project: Selfdestructing email aliases.
Looks pretty neat! Tried it out and took a quick look at the code. If I ever need a temp alias I will definitely use this. But, one thing I didn't find any info about anywhere.

Do you keep track of the deleted alias "keys". That is, if I create a mail and the key is m4m2 or whatever, I want to make sure that m4m2 will never ever lead to someone else (as well as not to me). If i register an account somewhere I obviously never want the mail going to the alias to end up at someone else either.

ique··on 1Gbps connection now costs $26 a month in Hong Kong
I can speak for Japan and Sweden (which also offers 1Gbps for around 30-40 bucks) and that is 1Gbps over the entire internet, in Sweden there isn't even any commercial restriction from this particular ISP (in Lund), i.e. I could set up a server farm in my apartment and sell space if I wanted.

I've only tested 100mbit in Japan (that was free with the apartment) and that was 100mbit to anywhere.

ique··on A 2.5 Year-Old Has A First Encounter with An iPad
I haven't actually tried out the Android OS that extensively. Aside from testing it now and then on friends phones I've never really used it. Hence my question. Though my own experience with the iPhone is that a two-year-old could actually start using it right away, and that's not the feeling I get from Android.

aphyr makes a brilliant point that simplicity and power often compete with each other and maybe Apple is trying to target the less tech-savvy user.

Since I interpreted aphyrs comment as saying the Android app-switching method was easier, I was genuinely curious as to wether he thought the Android platform was overall as easy as the iPhone platform.

ique··on A 2.5 Year-Old Has A First Encounter with An iPad
A couple of weeks ago everyone in the administration of the school my mom works at got Android phones.

Only about 2-3 people understood anything the phone had to offer of about a dozen people. They recently had to take the entire administration through a full-day course on how to use the phone.

Do you think this 2 year old could understand the android platform as easily as she does iPhone OS?

ique··on WakeMates are shipping! Congrats WakeMates
I ordered mine on the 24th, so I hope significantly sooner! :P
ique··on 99designs Launches $99 Logo Store
All you're arguments are absolutely valid and true, but I don't think anyone isn't aware of them. Everyone knows design sells products, it's not about that.

I've done a bunch of designwork, including logos, for very small-scale projects like day-care centers, local sports organizations and so forth, and I can tell you they would be soo much better off just buying something they like from this place.

The marketplace isn't intended for Apple or Coca-Cola and any company understands the differences. No day-care center, no matter how stupid you think they are, pretend like they're getting the same for 99 bucks as they are with a professional design-firm. They don't want a professional design, they want something to stick on their letterhead for the annual newsletter.

These kinds of sites aren't competition to real designers, they offload crap-designers like me who would rather code.

ique··on Show HN: Weekend Project - Japanese Wordsearch Builder
I'm going to Japan in a while to study Japanese, this will most definitely come in hand! :D
ique··on HN Rant: Come and Go Voting
On a slightly different but related topic: I've never been able to downvote anything, neither posts nor comments. Why is that?
ique··on Ask HN: Fastest way to make $300-400 a month online?
But people will pay copious amounts of money to not have to read that information themselves, in other words; teaching and coaching that information can certainly be valuable.
ique··on Ask HN: Fastest way to make $300-400 a month online?
How do you make money by writing articles, and what kind of articles? Are you talking tutorials on some tutorial site that buys them or are you writing journalistic reports for blogs/news industry?

Or something else entirely?

ique··on Social micropayment system by Peter Sunde of Pirate Bay fame goes beta
A lot of comments here seem to focus on how to use it to replace payments for an industry (like music) or to replace the subscription model for a webapp, and maybe that is a bit far-fetched but I can see a huge use in this for low-level stuff.

If I Google a programming exception and get an answer from a blog I can show them some love. I create a lot of small websites used by friends and people from school or some other social context and I can very well see myself sticking that button on all of them to help me buy an extra beer this weekend.

If it grows enough it might be able to fund some "real" stuff, but I don't think it should be put in that context from the get-go.

ique··on [dead]
It seems like it could be useful and has a nice clean layout, big pictures, vids and useful links. I sort of agree with the "spam" feeling though, something doesn't feel right about it, maybe the lack of text, maybe with nothing but pics on the front-page it just looks like a big ad for random products.

One functional problem though: I tried to search for an olympus camera and typing Olympus and it completes correctly, I see that there are Olympus Exx models in the list and i continue to write Olympus E to fetch just those and look them over, but then suddently at Olympus E it switches the autocomplete to say "BenQ ..." which is obviously just wrong.

ique··on Ask HN: My nephew wants to learn programming. What should I recommend?
How about an extention of DrScheme allowing some really awesome livecoding? Fluxus gives you the entire REPL as well as an editor and the program runs and displays the graphic with a press of F5, this is how I first got into Scheme.

ique··on A Tool to Deceive and Slaughter
Why go with just wireless? It could just as easily be hooked up to 3G and Edge to access eBay.
ique··on The Neural Advantage of Speaking 2 Languages
In Sweden I wouldn't say that kids enjoy learning it, but everyone sees it as absolutely necessary. It's also used every day because all music, all TV-shows (except some really bad Swedish shows) and all movies are in English.

Since we start so early and never stop until we're 18, everyone just kind of accepts it as something part of life and by the time you're 18 you're perfectly fluent.

ique··on The Neural Advantage of Speaking 2 Languages
Very interesting article. Can't help but to think about the differences in countries educational systems. I'm Swedish, here we start studying English in second (numbers and such) and third grade (start with words and grammar). And then study it all the way up and through high-school.

Pretty much every Swede of a younger generation is fluent in English. Almost all people also spend several years in grades 6-9 studying a third language (Spanish, French or German is required to take if you don't have a learning disability, then you focus on English with that time instead).

It's easy for practically every country in the world to offer education in English because you can't live in a modern world without English. But it seems hard to motivate English speaking nations to study other languages. What languages would be of enough importance for, for instance, Americans, to make it obligatory education?

ique··on Why Malcolm Gladwell is Wrong
>Having that single-minded focus and dedication needed to put in the 10k hours makes you an outlier.

Then doesn't that in a sense make it the talent you're talking about?

I think we're just splitting hairs here, I'm pretty sure I mean the same thing as you :)

ique··on Why Malcolm Gladwell is Wrong
Your second paragraph here is exactly how I interpreted the book. They are not Outliers and special in any way, they are merely successful because they had the stamina to put in the 10,000 hours he talks about.

The entire point of the 10k hour rule is that anyone can become an expert and be successful if they just stick with it and do what it takes. That's the reason there are no true Outliers.

ique··on Why Malcolm Gladwell is Wrong
Oh, excuse me, fixed it right away.
ique··on Why Malcolm Gladwell is Wrong
I might be a bit tired right now so I couldn't grasp what she meant. But was there ever a counter-argument in this post?

"I don’t know, because it’s a faulty premise. Just because an entrepreneur minimizes his or her downside, he doesn’t render his risk meaningless."

So she's saying that Gladwell should have said "minimized risk" instead of "[about taking risks] they do no such thing".

"What he never acknowledges is that most entrepreneurs fail, whether they are zany or calculating, and whether or not they are prepared for the challenges of creating a new business."

She doesn't acknowledge this because that wasn't the point of the article. Entrepreneurs who take less risk are generally more successful, of course many (maybe even most) fail anyway, that doesn't change the fact that you are more successful if you take less risk.

This article seems more like a summary and not an actual argument for why "Malcolm Gladwell Must Be Stopped" or why "He’s also a purveyor of garbage".

Edit: he = she

ique··on Ok Go on Why Labels Won't Let You Embed YouTube Videos
I've always been deeply interested in the inner workings of record labels.

As I understand it, it seems that a label is somewhat like a VC for artists. But no VC takes 80-90% of the company they invested in. Why do they need to take such a big part? Is pressing CDs such a huge risk and expense? If such; why continue doing it? Barely anyone buys CDs for obvious reasons, shouldn't there at least be an option for artists that don't want to press CDs? Maybe there is but artists just want CDs for some reason?

Why can't artists get regular bank-loans to fund their business? Is it just too high risk? It seems that someone as famous as Ok Go should be able to take a bank-loan to fund some studio time, but I suppose they're already under contract.

Anyway, if anyone has answers to these questions or links to where I can read more about stuff like this, please do share.

ique··on Ask HN: Lesser known blogging apps?
"Where did I say I didn't mind writing my own platform?"

My point was exactly this. Rather than writing your own platform, which will most likely be less secure (but not vulnerable to blanket attacks), you could just write the plugins you want and a theme and then Wordpress is absolutely no hassle at all to maintain. Everything is done via auto-update and after you've made a theme you never have to touch code again and you wont have to suffer feature-wise.

I have never once had auto-update fail and I run 10-15 off-the-shelf plugins.

There are things more secure, they are elegant, but they are definitely not less of a hassle to maintain. I have yet to see any platform (though I haven't studied those outside of the Rails community that thoroughly) that have an auto-update feature so complete and problem-free that Wordpress has.

If you are to say just one good thing about Wordpress, it is that it is hassle-free to maintain. This is the reason it has become popular, the only way any sort of software can become popular is when people without coding experience or knowledge of how to admin a server can maintain and update it.

Since you haven't updated it for a couple of versions, I'd strongly recommend you do so and try using it again. A lot of development happens and I'd suggest you build a new opinion on what Wordpress actually is today.

If you still don't think auto-updating everything and installing both themes and plugins from the admin-page without having to touch the filesystem manually – you can try to find something easier, but I sincerely doubt you will.

ique··on Ask HN: Lesser known blogging apps?
You want every feature of Wordpress, but you don't want Wordpress. Not once in the last 3 years have I had a plugin that didn't work with a newer version. I haven't had to "reinstall" it even once either. Maybe you just need to choose your plugins more wisely, or if you really care about the quality and security of your blog; write your own plugin.

You're not adverse to switching platform entirely and if the comments here are to be followed, you don't mind rolling your own platform. But you can't write your own theme that's compatible with future versions?

I'd say if you pay attention to the capabilities of Wordpress and actually use it as you're supposed to (I've not seen one major security vulnerability that affected the current version, someone can correct me if I'm wrong) you won't find a better fit for your requirements.

ique··on Etherpad includes banned (on Google code) software JSMin
The example was a contrived one to illustrate my point. While I understand that the license statement is there because he doesn't want "giant corporates" to use it without permission, those kinds of licenses are in general hurtful. We only take this lightly because we trust that the author is a good person. The author could however easily take any corporation, startup or not, to court because just as you say – good is a point of view. It is unlikely that any judge would take it seriously but because there's (probably) no precedent it can still be a very large hassle for a small company, forcing them to hire lawyers and avert them from their core business.

These kinds of "licenses" are more likely hurtful to startups than large corporations.

ique··on Etherpad includes banned (on Google code) software JSMin
Who says it wont? If the hellfire missiles is used to kill terrorists plotting to nuke the world I would say they were used for good!

The license statement is just ridiculous and doesn't mean anything at all, yet it gives legal departments everywhere a big problem to deal with.

ique··on EtherPad Open Source Release
That's pretty cool! But only useful for the few of my friends that would know how to run a perl script (and have LaTeX installed) unfortunately LaTeX is a rarity at Swedish schools and I need to make it super simple and install-free to make some of my classmates use it.
ique··on EtherPad Open Source Release
I have my last final today. This comes as a perfect school-is-over-and-i-can-start-hacking-again gift! I'm hoping to be able to integrate LaTeX export into this so I can collaborate on LaTeX reports without having to download and build manually.
ique··on Jekyll, the blog engine of kings
I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but if you run jekyll --server --auto while in development any small change you make gets automatically regenerated and it only regenerates affected files.
ique··on Poll: Language Use
Not to mention matrix calculations, which I actually do on a daily basis (for solving PDEs).
ique··on Stanford videos on Entrepreneurship
I was looking for this just the other day on iTunes U and the Stanford website but couldn't find it. Thanks for this link =)
