ipv6ipv4··on Caught on camera: Satellite tracker photographs secret spacecraft
What about Chinese satellites?

Somehow, I feel that would be more interesting as there is even less public information about them.

ipv6ipv4··on Cobb Tuning Hit with $2.9M Fine over Emissions Defeat Devices
Yes, by leaps, and bounds in some cases.

In particular, turbocharged engines tend to have a lot of extra power potential by increasing turbocharger boost.

ipv6ipv4··on Please stop putting cookie pop-ups on your website (2022)
Maybe it can. I don’t know.
ipv6ipv4··on Please stop putting cookie pop-ups on your website (2022)
Some sites ask you for an email, or login when you scroll down, and you have to hide it to keep reading. I think Medium pioneered this?
ipv6ipv4··on Please stop putting cookie pop-ups on your website (2022)
By far, my favorite feature in iOS 18 is Safari’s “hide distracting items” feature. It lets you permanently hide the cookie popups on a per site basis. And the annoying google sign in popups, and the annoying scroll down popups.
ipv6ipv4··on Please stop putting cookie pop-ups on your website (2022)
> The regulation doesn't mention cookie popups. The easiest way to comply is to not collect nor store any such information.

Utopia is just around the corner as long as everyone does exactly as I say rather than being driven by self interest.

ipv6ipv4··on The internet is worse than it used to be. How did we get here?
I think a large part of it is the balkanization of the internet into multiple opaque walled gardens. You can’t find anything, or freely join communities to exchange information anymore because everything is locked away behind some search engine blocking login.

Discussion moved from public, open bulletin boards, forums, and similar to Facebook groups, discord, etc. It’s locked away, unindexable, and unfindable. Even Twitter clammed up recently. So the only thing left searchable is auto-generated clickbait. While FB, and friends are optimizing engagement by nursing misery behind their login walls.

The only growing public forum left is Reddit which is why more of us keep adding “site:Reddit.com” to our search queries to surface quality results. And even Reddit has threatened to close off.

ipv6ipv4··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
> But also my larger meta-point is that there's a now near ubiquitous "sour grapes" attitude that's pervaded HN

I’ve recently noticed it everywhere. Not just on HN.

ipv6ipv4··on Ask HN: Why is Pave legal?
Legal or not, Pave is unethical.
ipv6ipv4··on Buy, Borrow, Die – Explained
I’d imagine that for some wealthy people it’s an unavoidable outcome of hiring wealth managers simply because they need someone to manage their wealth. The managers, in turn, have a professional obligation to minimize costs, including taxes - so they cook up these tax schemes.
ipv6ipv4··on Why Italy Fell Out of Love with Cilantro
Cilantro falling out of favor from Ancient Rome is minor compared to Silphium which was an extremely popular Roman plant that went extinct, and nobody today knows what it was. Also Asafoetida, Liquamen, and Garum. Garum production was a large industry in Ancient Rome. Today, while there are some ostensibly traditional fish sauces made in parts of Italy, nobody knows for certain how Garum was made in Ancient Rome or if extant methods are related.
ipv6ipv4··on The hacking of culture and the creation of socio-technical debt
In 1830, I believe most papers were weekly. So your percentage is missing a multiplier that could be fairly substantial.

And by 1850 the number of newspapers (still mostly weeklies) nearly tripled with an annual circulation of 500 million.

ipv6ipv4··on The Effects of Early Relational Trauma (2001) [pdf]
Often, traumatized individuals traumatize their children. So it’s at least a somewhat self perpetuating phenomenon that may not decay away over generations. As a result, it seems reasonable to assume that different groups could have different prevalences of traumatized individuals.

How does the prevalence of traumatized individuals characterize a society as a whole? For example, it seems that a society where the majority are traumatized should be fundamentally different from a society where a minority are traumatized.

ipv6ipv4··on A leadership crisis in the Nix community
What is it then?
ipv6ipv4··on A leadership crisis in the Nix community
What is the composition of the nix community?
ipv6ipv4··on What if null was an Object in Java?
It is part of what makes Objective-C phenomenally good for rapid development in the hands of competent developers. However, as team, and codebase sizes increase, it allows for subtle bugs by less competent developers.
ipv6ipv4··on Tesla discloses it spent $200k advertising on X
Tesla is a publicly traded company with shareholders.

Twitter is Musk’s private plaything.

Tesla using Twitter services could be a conflict of interest because Musk is CEO of both and could be using his position at Tesla to funnel public shareholder money into Twitter, aka his pocket.

ipv6ipv4··on AI assists clinicians in responding to patient messages at Stanford Medicine
Stanford medicine in a nutshell. Stanford medical has spread like a cancer around me, and all the clinics that were acquired immediately became awful.
ipv6ipv4··on A disk so full, it couldn't be restored
Time Machine works fine. Better than anything available on Windows. I’ve used it for more than a decade and a half, with multiple restores, across multiple machines.

My current desktop Mac environment is a direct descendant of my original Mac from 2004 thanks, largely, to Time Machine.

ipv6ipv4··on Minimal phone gets back to basics with E Ink display and real keyboard
The best minimal phone is a cellular smart watch.
ipv6ipv4··on "If nothing changes, all remaining Nitter instances will go down eventually"
Yes.

But there is no aggregation - each user runs their own instances. For any site the offers an API, the API would need to have breaking changes to disable this, or block access from AWS.

It's easy to make work for a developer like crowd (very little time to write). It would work for most developers just fine, and could, with more considerable development time, be good for anyone.

Distributed guerilla social media deconstruction.

ipv6ipv4··on "If nothing changes, all remaining Nitter instances will go down eventually"
This can be done with little AWS Lambda scripts that periodically scrape (or API) whatever sites you want and e-mail you results. All the credentials to login to whatever sites can be personal/dedicated to your instance (so no real API limits), and the usage will almost certainly fall into the AWS free tier since it's only for you.

The ideal install workflow would be to have a repo of AWS CloudFormation templates to automate the installation of the lambdas for different sites in your account. Anyone can open an AWS account, and using CloudFormation is a few fields, and a button click.

Also, if the scripts are developed properly, they are runnable locally. A sane developer will run them locally during development, and then test deployed before releasing.

ipv6ipv4··on The story of titanium
Titanium anodizes very easily with a 9V battery and a wet paper towel. It’s a quick, and easy to way to test for titanium.
ipv6ipv4··on Tested: Black 4.0, the "blackest black" is a lot blacker. 0f1012 vs. 272928
How does black 4.0 compare to Musou black?

Musou black was far more black than black 3.0 about a year ago. It wasn’t even close.

ipv6ipv4··on Aeroflot deactivates brakes on nine aircraft, relies solely on reverse thrust
And yet here you are, on a thoroughly Western website, enjoying free speech. Classic.
ipv6ipv4··on Signal president says company will not comply with U.K. ‘mass surveillance’ law
This argument is over. The 'screeching minority' convinced Apple that the 'privacy-preserving' nonsense was nonsense. I don't know why you are so desperate to cling to such a bad idea that its main proponent, Apple, decided it was indeed bad. It's like trying to be holier than the pope.
ipv6ipv4··on Signal president says company will not comply with U.K. ‘mass surveillance’ law
It's amazing how many times this has to be repeated. Meta/Google/DropBox can scan to their hearts content on their own machines. They own their machines, they can do whatever they want with them. Apple normalized the notion of having your own hardware spy on you at the government's behest.
ipv6ipv4··on Llama 2
It doesn't work for me.

  brew install simonw/llm/llm
  ...

  ==> Installing llm from simonw/llm
Error: Your Command Line Tools are too outdated.
Update them from Software Update in System Settings.

If that doesn't show you any updates, run:
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools
    sudo xcode-select --install

  Alternatively, manually download them from:
    https://developer.apple.com/download/all/.
You should download the Command Line Tools for Xcode 14.3.

I have 14.3.1 installed
ipv6ipv4··on Signal president says company will not comply with U.K. ‘mass surveillance’ law
The idea of pervasive spying has been around forever. The want, and why. Apple mainstreamed, normalized the discourse, and demoed the concept of pre-scanning in the face of E2E. Apple provided the answer for the how.
ipv6ipv4··on Signal president says company will not comply with U.K. ‘mass surveillance’ law
This is the lasting legacy of Apple’s CSAM photo scanning debacle. Apple mainstreamed the concept, demoed the dystopian tool, and legitimized the discourse of this dystopian insanity.

Apple executives should be ashamed of their direct role in this.
