Spending my time drinking coffee, tea and remembering to put myself down every single time I make a post on HN. You know, so I get a normal decent conversation from some thin skinned gatekeeping neckbeard burrowed deep inside a 6 figure FANG company who is not doing his job, yet clearly winning at life.
Sorry. I promise Ill get some therapy.
PS - If you are reading my profile because you are cross with somethign i said please rest assured, I have no idea who you are, I was only making a counter argument. You can downvote my comments but it has no affect on me, just reply with a clarification or a better argument and I will likely concede.
I was just wonderig because afer 2 decades i odnt think I would even know where to start to code an svg
... however (say what you will but chuckie egg wasnt on the commodore)
I dont know
Good to hear alternative opinions though
imagine if you will.... the trolling you are serving
Personally, and this could just be me, I think if I read something of interest I always do my own research, as I dont believe most of what I read, so I expect others to do the same.
I also think its rude to write alot of text instead of a concise expression of an idea.
Bro 5-8 paragraphs is like saying, prove every single point in half of what you wrote.
First of all I didnt "Make a claim" I said "For example". Bear in mind everyone infers differently. My point was there are setups that allow claimants to take small entities to court, without them having to foot the bill.
Law Centres Network: ~120,000 citizens/year (free solicitor casework & representation) LawWorks: ~70,000 citizens/year (free pro bono legal advice & casework)
If you are confused by the statement there are no small coffee shops - are you living in Europe? From first hand experience coffee shops survive less than a couple years on any high street , yet there is a Starbucks on every street corner and it’s a well known fact small coffee shops operate on almost non existent margins.
I heard in the 50s an american could just startup a business installing septic tanks. But now the same person would need a myriad of regulations to be met, heavy equipment use mandated, all of which raise overhead to a level where its impossible to get off the ground.
I always felt the EU were the "good guys", IE not allowing corps to steam roll everyone, what with their rules fining poor behvaiour such as privacy violations, chargers being non standard etc.
However the same problem exists in weird ways you wouldnt even imagine.
For example if someone walks into a small "mom and pops" coffee shop and accuse the owner of "ejecting them due to harrasment reasons", that results in a court case, which can bankrupt the whole margin thin enterprise.
You might say, wait how on earth would a random troublemaker get funding to take a cafe to court, and for what benefit? For one its easier for a settlement to be reached regardless of fault that benefits the claimant than a long court process.
Now how could claimants have the resources? Unbelievably it turns out there are free national non profit corporations that will take any claim for free to court for situation mentioned above.
So what happens in the end? The small coffee shops cant survive but the larger corps who can afford the random payouts are fine, the competition seems to go away on its own and the claimants are happy with what amounts to random payouts for little work.
Please look it up it, and correct me if im wrong, I only know this from some little research into the forays of why small coffee shops find it hard to survive in western landscapes and risks, as I wanted to open my own coffee shop!
In summary, as always the road to ruin is paved with good intentions. So the EU trying to help a little guy in a specific context, ends up creating a situation that makes all small coffee shops non profitable.
I have no solutions.
Yes destroying a book is in my opinion identical to a book burning.
One day there will be no hard copies, the digital books are hence vulnerable to patches, whether its due to a new political movement or a sudo abled hamster running on a keyboard... and if that occurs information will be permanently lost.
I would have thought a HN user understand well the importance of backups.
I dont want to sound mean, perhaps you also support keeping some hard copies as backups, but Im just explaining my concern.
To be honest I think everything I am saying is just common sense, I was just making a joke earlier about the architects deciding to do this because they had a bad tuesday.
I wasn't even making an unusual or particularly strong statement
Im going to try and be patient and explain my position. I just feel that actions that are destructive should always be seen through a lens of suspicion.
IE, lets destroy this wood to reduce the chance of wildfires. Ok, well why that wood? we sure there arent other interests at play? Ie a carpark wanting to be built by a local authority?
As you become older and witness large acts occur due to unclear scheming, you start to become sensitive towards destructive acts, feeling there should be a lens cast over it.
Maybe Im just paranoid.
Sure I can understand there must be tons of books that are not needed, but books, are object that include native function that IN the right context becomes priceless and hence should be treated with a degree of concern.
That was about 2 years ago. Im not kidding.
I dont know what the moral of the story is, but I found it weird at the time ( for added context - i was using AI back then about 10 hours a day, BUT I think sentiment on HN was "still" around the vibe of "you use AI to code without checking every line? I doubt your projects work" - but I had nothing better to do then wrestle with it and was surprised how I hadnt checked my code in weeks but stuff "worked". Its much better now and agents are accepted ofcourse but it sort of "snuck up" on people even in the tech community as recently as that.
I guess what Im saying is time is going quickly.
I guess all that remains are man made horrors beyond comprehension
I cant fathom how this was a "if they know it doesnt matter at all" situation.
A complete acceptance of real / fake, who cares its about stuff looking great.
I mean I can be told it but I cant understand why you would waste millions on real works just to have fake ones, why not just go all fake? If its a half way house then does no one care what is real?
IE on linkedin somany AI videos with thousands of comments and likes and I become lost on ... do most poeple just not care if its real or not? I dont think they do at all. Am I mad to care?
Its very easy to say well everyone uses filters and they are not real. And its true! But somewhere and I have no idea where, there seems tobe a line for me where I say no, thats not cricket, you cant just replace part of an image with a template of something else. I have no idea tho any thoughts appreciated.
