intrasight··on Why Doesn't Anyone Want to Fix One of America's Scariest Roads?
Did that every year visiting family all through the 70s and early 80s from age 5 through 15. Left an indelible mark.
intrasight··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Then it's just an argument about raising taxes, which any municipality could choose to do, rather than a question of land value tax.

Georgeism is just silly from economics standpoint

intrasight··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I spent a month in Italy and drank many fine wines. The most expensive sold at supermarket was 15 euo. Most were like 6.

> I think LVT does have a history in US, e.g Pittsburgh

Yeah, I looked at the map in the article and thought, wait a minute, why is Pennsylvania not colorcoded if Pittsburgh has a land value tax? So the map is only showing states that do? I didnt know there were any states that tax land. But do remember being confused when I moved to Pittsburgh by there being two separate taxes - for land and for property.

I also think that the pittsburgh example shows that LVT is meaningless. All homeowners care about here is their total real estate tax. How it is split between land and property nobody pays attention to.

intrasight··on Brightline, a high-speed railway service based in Florida, filed for bankruptcy
I'm not sure if that last statement is true. I think there were many private rail passenger services back in the day.
intrasight··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
Right, and that's why it doesn't really matter what innovative things don't get added to Excel because people wouldn't be using them.

Spreadsheets at their core are a visual intetaction model; a table with cells that can affect other cells. Beyond that core, you can do whatever you want - including with Excel, so the 10% that don't want to treated as a calculator can do so with a little bit of bespoke programming.

I've implemented several business applications where Excel was the user agent against specialized backend services. This was before the browser took over the front end in developer's mindset.

intrasight··on The Murky History of Soviet-Born Tetris
> A major instrument of that victory had been the spread of Western culture

That's the political fluff. The important thing was the spread of capitalism and its accompanying legal institutions such as trademark and copyright - which Tetris definitely represented.

intrasight··on Plan mode is dead
> if I am not even quite sure what exactly I want to build myself

Sounded to me like you need a plan.

My approach is to take the statement of work or problem definition and iterate on that myself until I'm really clear on what is the goal. I therefore have a good some good ideas about what the plan should be.

If extending an existing application, which is usually the case, then make use of the plan documents that I had written before AI arrived on the scene. These sre documents in markdown form that say step-by-step how to, for example, add a new report to the system.

intrasight··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
After programming for 40 years, my brain has many language parsers. But languages and interfaces and classes evolve and it been a huge productivity boost the use LLMs for coding.

I use AI like StackOverflow on steroids. And like using stackoverflow, I do it in a browser and I don't let the LLM touch my code.

I, personally, love programming more than ever!

intrasight··on Git-bug: Distributed, offline-first bug tracker embedded in Git
"you only need your git repository to have a bug tracker"

What if my git repo doesn't have a bug tracker?

intrasight··on Dynamic Abliteration: Non-Destructive Refusal Suppression via Engram Steering
Probably pretraining but certainly posttraining filtering
intrasight··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
That would be income tax
intrasight··on Dynamic Abliteration: Non-Destructive Refusal Suppression via Engram Steering
In Beijing, they're banned at the model weights level not in a front-end as this approach discusses.
intrasight··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
The problem, in my opinion, isn't that they "do", but they "can". Once the windowing system gave up control, it disempowered the user. For example, allowing apps to change the window chrome. For me that was basically the end of usability of WIMP. We no longer have a strong separation of concerns. we need that back, and we need the user to be in charge of the behavior of the windowing system. my strong preference, for example, is that I cannot interact with any window that doesn't have focus until I give it focus. At some point in the last 20 years, that standard was broken, and I have been stuck ever since accidentally doing things to windows that don't have focus.

Software engineers do code reviews, and in the age of AI, they have to do chat reviews.

Much of the knowledge of writing the software is manifest and captured in those chats. and we share them so that we can learn from each other.

intrasight··on The Download: why AI's latest breakthroughs and fears may be more hype than rea
My experience is that the LLM offers that approach from the get-go.

Also, I've worked with lots of humans who sadly would not notice the pattern.

intrasight··on The Download: why AI's latest breakthroughs and fears may be more hype than rea
> The more code AI writes for me the worse it gets.

That makes no sense unless you're claiming that the models are getting worse at writing code.

> Either AI gets smart enough that it won’t matter in the future or we’re going to have a huge mess to clean up.

My prediction is that both will happen.

intrasight··on The darker side of being a doctor
They are priced out earlier - when they can't get the academic credentials to pass the medical school gatekeeping.
intrasight··on The darker side of being a doctor
Same with politicians.

Prompts and LLM conversations have now become an important software artifact. I don't think the question should be whether or not to save them. They should be saved. The question is how to structure them in your folders and whether or not they should be part of the context for the LLM.

Our approach is to save LLM conversations but to not have them be part of the context.

Obviously, that's the correct end result. We're just not quite there yet.
intrasight··on Transit rewards
Private autonomous transportation will allow that public infrastructure to be tenfold more productive.

Public transportation will never have the incentive to minimize cost and headcount.

Where we do have public transportation, it should always face competition from private offerings - including on the tracks, as they do in Italy, for example.

intrasight··on Transit rewards
Sound Transit still uses this strategy in Seattle region.
intrasight··on I said no and Apple said yes
I didn't really interpret this discussion as being about laptops - as opposed to being around Apple hardware and software in general.
intrasight··on Engineering Memory: On learning to memorize first 100 digits of pi (2024)
I assume my daughter used that song as well. I remember us sitting at the dining room table and her peeling off 100 digits of pi. I explained to her that that would provide an accuracy such that a circle the size of the observable universe would be accurate to within a Planck length.

Fun memory from 16 years ago. Next month she'll be obtaining her PhD in physics.

intrasight··on I said no and Apple said yes
I don't even get the "quality hardware" argument. The only hardware I interact with is my high quality mechanical keyboard, trackball, and color calibrated monitor. All are vastly superior to any Apple hardware that I would interact with.
intrasight··on Will Open Source Survive the Agents That Replaced It?
It's a valid assumption, and it is going to have a huge impact on the SaaS marketplace. "I need a resource tracking application. Let me find a consultant to help me vibe code it rather than pay $10,000 a month."
intrasight··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
Anyone know of any good research articles on the Information-theoretical aspects of this? I find it a compelling topic.
intrasight··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
It's been a huge boon to hardware vendors.
