intoverflow2··on Apple Teases Upcoming Space Gray iMac Pro, "the most powerful Mac ever"
>This really seems to me to be a "what can we get out sooner"

Feels the opposite to me, feels like they've considered this the Mac Pro killer. But then at the last minute back at the start of the year realised there was still a place for a Mac Pro.

Probably because this solves none of the real issues with the last Mac Pro.

intoverflow2··on Apple Teases Upcoming Space Gray iMac Pro, "the most powerful Mac ever"
It's pretty obvious that decision was made when this product was almost complete and this product was supposed to replace the entire Mac Pro line.

Obviously something changed their minds though.

> Someone editing 4K+ video on Final Cut professionally

As someone who works in this industry these individuals are becoming few and far between. Think it's time to stop pretending Apple is a major player in this area, they pushed and shoved FCP users right to the edge and many just made the jump to better supported software and high end hardware.

> That leaves me to wonder who exactly this iMac Pro is targeted at.

People who would have bought the Mac Pro. I think it's obvious that this was supposed to replace it in the lineup.

With the announcement that a Mac Pro is back on the cards I think this becomes a confused product. Locking $5Ks worth of computing power into a disposable shell boggles my mind a bit.

>so why not a new mechanical keyboard design for the iMac and Mac Pro

https://input.club/whitefox/ + http://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-think-different-keycap-set/

Why even bother begging Apple for this sort of thing when you can support independent creators happy to serve these niches.

>I hope Apple isn't about to miss the plot again.

To me this machine is a sign that they had. It has the exact same problems as the Mac Pro design with even less modularity (Pro could swap out drives and ram).

Although I also think this was supposed to replace the Mac Pro line entirely and only in about jan/feb they decided that they still needed a stand alone Pro. So I guess time will tell if they finally release the "xMac" people have been asking for the past 10 years.

"Have you got a 'heef' file of that photo please?"

Could have been branded better if I'm honest. I know engineers generally don't care about stuff like this but some of us will have to say this term many times a day if takes off.

intoverflow2··on Alleged Foxconn insiders leaked details about Apple’s forthcoming devices
From the wording of the announcement it sounded like it was a project <3 months old at the time. They specifically said it wouldn't be this year too.

Honestly for well over a year now it felt like the Pro was officially canned and ATP podcast reported from an insider that literally no one was working on it as soon as Q4 2016.

My thinking is there was a change of direction internally and a decision the future of Apple still required the talent and community of pro users rather than just embracing the mainstream full on and hoping that pros will be happy with iPads.

> Man how often do I hear "I don't want ads on my desktop"

OS X has plenty of ads and nags for iCloud and Apple Music FYI.

Fill up your iCloud space and it will ask you to buy more on every boot.

Siri on OS X was artificially limited to only play music from Apple Music but not your iTunes library when even the iPhone 4 could play music stored in its internal app.

intoverflow2··on Oculus founder Palmer Luckey is developing border surveillance technology
Maybe it was downplayed in America but it was a massive part of the UK participating in the war and eventually went on to be a big scandal after David Kelly's death https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutton_Inquiry

UI/digital product designers would do themselves a favour to actually read up on what these terms actually mean that they keep co-opting.

This is incredibly cheeky.

intoverflow2··on Instagram CEO on Stories: Don’t Call It a Copycat
I understand that for a product like FB, but Instagram was well loved and certainly wasn't the Microsoft in any relationship until recently.
intoverflow2··on Instagram CEO on Stories: Don’t Call It a Copycat
> For the love of God why?

Because Snap didn't accept the cheque, it's starting to feel like a personal vendetta.

I find it hard to believe it being anything else I mean what's the alternative? That all 3 teams completely ran out of creativity at the same point and decided to clone the same features at the same time? Far more likely that these orders are coming down from the top.

intoverflow2··on Instagram CEO on Stories: Don’t Call It a Copycat
Can't imagine how frustrating it must be to be in one of these teams working under the Snapchat-feature-clone product strategy of recent FB.

It's worth understanding the Mac software ecosystem is mostly made up of people who love the platform and OS.

Windows just isn't the same, lots of devs making software the same way the made it 15+ years ago and not wanting or even caring enough to change no matter what the benefits.

intoverflow2··on The Turing Tumble lets you and your kids build real mechanical computers
> actually understanding how a computer works

Question for me is does it actually matter? Do they care? And will understanding this actually make them want to engage with the topic further?

Even me growing up back in the Amiga 500 days I couldn't really care less how the machine actually worked, the impetus to learn how to control it came from the want to make my own games not to understand how it did something as boring as add two numbers together.

Did the maths a while back, the amount of money they've spent commissioning GIFs from artists for their Studio program is a small fraction that Electric Objects has spent.
intoverflow2··on What I Learned When Facebook Disabled My Account (2012)
> Something needs to be done about Facebook's near dominance of the Social Media space

Not gonna stop now, they just have the money to buy market share. If people had jumped ship after the Insta acquire then it could have been a blow to them wasting all that money on a dead space but nah people still kept using it and fell for it because they didn't change things right away and now Instagram is a mess of ads and stolen features and the creepy data sharing from FB is oozing in through friend "suggestions".

intoverflow2··on Show HN: Choosing font combinations with deep learning
Interesting, but not all design is about harmony.

I'd be more interested in examples where ML could create combinations that shouldn't work together but work. Think like some of the more experimental stuff coming out of the Bloomberg Business Week design team

intoverflow2··on New Surface Pro
If only, if only Apple made something like the Surface Studio
intoverflow2··on Apple Monitoring Blood Glucose
Yeah can't really argue against that logic, just arguing for someone to fulfil my needs to do my job.

Maybe it's time for a new "truck" company that focuses on the needs of the few and Apple can ditch computers and focus on the needs of the many.

intoverflow2··on New Surface Pro
Apple Pencil is $99 and NOT included in their tablet offering, also artificially gated to their higher end tablets not available to the whole lineup like Surface Pen is.

Seriously how is Microsoft even supposed to compete when they're held to completely different standards to their rival. I do feel for them.

Not to mention Surface Pen works with REAL Photoshop and REAL Illustrator.

intoverflow2··on New Surface Pro
> No USB-C

What would you even plug into it? It's not like USB-C accessories are readily stocked everywhere, I'm still carrying around dongles all day for my TouchBar MBP.

If the laptop shipped with USB-C people would be whinging they need dongles, literally can't win.

intoverflow2··on Apple Monitoring Blood Glucose
If Apple doesn't make this someone else will.

If Apple doesn't make decent laptops and desktops then who else can?

This is what bothers be about Tim Cooks priorities in health and celebrities next to his apathy towards computers. (I don't consider the iPad a computer I consider it a device)

intoverflow2··on Windows 10 Enterprise ignores various privacy settings
Ignoring people who need to control what leaves their systems for legal reasons I always find it odd how much the hardcore Windows users freak out over stuff like this.

I mean you trust your entire digital life to this OS yet the idea of analytics being sent back to the people who made the OS terrifies you? They also seem to freak out and declare certain versions near unusable when I've recently started using Win 10 after not using Windows since Win 2K and honestly it's 90% the same thing to me.

Also interested as to how many people freaking out over telemetry use Google software.
