My website is https://boehs.org, I hope you find solace in my home.

If you use Mastodon, I'm @eb@social.coop. If you use Bluesky, it's @boehs.org. If you use Twitter, there is no Twitter.

internetter··on Ask HN: Weird archive.today behavior?
There's really no interpretation of this which isn't malicious, although, not to defend this behaviour whatsoever, I'm not entirely surprised by it. The only real value of archive.is is its paywall bypassing abilities and, presumably, large swaths of residential proxies that allow it to archive sites that archive.org can't. Only somebody with some degree of lawlessness would operate such a project.
internetter··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
You cannot say "better" in this context without an almost endless degree of quantification that could fill textbooks. By what metric? Public health? Cost effectiveness? Environmental impact? How do we measure these things? I assume you're arguing a health perspective (which, at this point all we can say is probably better), but in the context of TFA "better" is more likely to be interpreted in an environmental context, of which I haven't really been convinced either way.
internetter··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
Perhaps spending it on inference that will be obsoleted in 6 months by the next model is not a good idea either.

Edit: especially given that Apple doesn’t do b2b so all the spend would be just to make consumer products

internetter··on GOG is getting acquired by its original co-founder
For what it's worth my laptop with 16gb of DDR4 and a 2070 seems to run every game as well as I could want it to. I'm happy with what I have in this regard. a little less than 10% of steam users are still using 1000 series Nvidia cards.
internetter··on GOG is getting acquired by its original co-founder
It's actually mostly the same in both cases. If steam or GOG goes down, you can no longer download the games you bought. But what about the games you have downloaded? Well GOG games will work out of the box, however the steam "DRM" is really just basic protection to stop you from copying the files to your friend's computer, and can easily be removed by already existing tools like Steamless and Goldberg Emulator. So I'm not really that worried about the vast majority of my steam library. The only thing I'd worry about is spiking storage costs when steam's demise seems imminent!
internetter··on A proposed amendment to ban under 16s in the UK from common online services
> Would love to get your thoughts on people who "have" social media vs people who abuse (or whatever you want to call it) social media. Is this like cigarettes, where having an account is too much, or more like sweets that can be enjoyed in moderation?

Erm, I feel most comfortable with an analogy to alcohol, perhaps. It has a high capacity to be abused yet is used in moderation by almost everyone. It’s almost incontestably physically harmful yet I still, of my own accord (as contrasted with nicotine which is addictive), choose to partake because there are benefits which I find valuable. I find social events much more enjoyable after a few drinks.

You can measure all these different harms of social media but I do think there are social benefits which are harder to quantify despite the companies who make the platforms being exploitive. It’s nice to see what my friends are doing. It’s nice to have a new avenue to hold conversations with new and old friends, far and near. I know that at points it’s taken a toll on me but today, despite considering myself to be fairly enlightened to the whole situation, I still continue to partake in social platforms and would likely reluctantly allow my children to do the same (I never really had open dialogue with my parents about social media, alcohol, and all these other vices. I turned out alright but I’d like to be there in that sort of sense for my children if I wind up having them in a way that differs to how my parents were.)

Yup. We already have <meta name="rating" content="adult"> for this reason. Very conveniently ignored.
internetter··on A proposed amendment to ban under 16s in the UK from common online services
Fairly recent teen here. This is simply not true. All my friends who started adamantly against social media had Instagram come end of senior year. At college, I could count on one hand the amount of people I met without it.

I know personally, I was never entirely without social media, but I switched to iPhone because I was so tired of being ostracized with regard to iMessage (this was pre-RCS, perhaps this particular concern has been alleviated)

Sure I guess all the Android users could band together and form a clique and maybe that happened to some extent, but I didn’t wish to associate as an Android user. I don’t imagine kids want “social media Luddite” to be their clique. I wanted to be an outdoorsy kid with tech interests at the most. My choice of phone brand isn’t a part of this identity.

It can if the platform has built in translation with an appropriate disclosure! for instance on Twitter or Mastodon.

internetter··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
I don't believe the diagnoses are fake. I didn't rant. I said I suspect. In fact I am diagnosed myself and have benefited from the diagnosis.
internetter··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
Yeah I suspect that people are being over-diagnosed, but I also suspect we're catching dramatically more cases than we were previously. An overcorrection if you will.

While I agree with your conclusion

> While this analysis might be completely off, the simple fact that I could get even this information without much efforts is mind-boggling. With better setup it might be able to get more.

This can essentially be rephrased as "I don't know if what the LLM said is true or not but the fact it may or may not be correct is amazing!"

internetter··on Critical RCE Vulnerabilities in React and Next.js
There is some value:

> The vulnerability exists in the default configuration of affected applications

Can be inferred from the react blog but isn't really explicit

> According to Wiz data, 39% of cloud environments have instances vulnerable to CVE-2025-55182 and/or CVE-2025-66478.

Numbers!

internetter··on Last Week on My Mac: Losing confidence

internetter··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
> My guess is that adblock became too easy on smartphones

Not within native apps. Your only option is essentially dns/hosts based on both platforms however this can also be done on the router. On Android there is ReVanced I guess. But these are almost as technical as a pihole. What is the percent of people who know of DNS based adblock but not pihole?

Edit: And DNS adblocking can be done on android tv.

internetter··on Lobsters Interview
Conversely, hn gets a lot of content which simply isn't intellectually stimulating. Like on the front page atm is pocketbase—a git repo which currently has 53k stars which I've known of for many years, and a surface level article on RAG titled 'So you wanna build a local RAG?' ~~which seems to mostly just exist so the author can plug their company in the first line.~~ which doesn't really contribute much niche knowledge you can't obtain anywhere else. As a blogger myself I can't claim superiority—I've done this plenty, but this content just doesn't seem to do as well on lobste.rs as compared to really niche content which is directly relevant to very few people, but as a result required a great deal of research and time and very possibly is of great utility to a rare few.

Edit: though to be clear this is a spectrum with heavy overlap. Just general biases I've observed. Like on Lobste.rs there is an article titled 'Electron vs. Tauri' atm.

internetter··on The privacy nightmare of browser fingerprinting
Point still taken, however you can only really check if a given font is installed, not obtain a list of all fonts. Thus, installing a wacky font is pointless as the fingerprinter won’t bother to check that particular font. There is queryLocalFonts on chrome but this requires a permission popup.
