I feel like another reason not teaching your children masculinity is bad cause one parent can defect (prisoner's dilemma) by teaching his kid boxing and how to use leadership skills to form a gang on the playground and then his kid can just do whatever he wants
Unfortunately I doubt there are any good solutions to this. People become obese because their lives are too fucked up to care for themselves properly. If your parents are weak, you're at high risk of being obese. If too many bad things happen to you at once you're at risk of being obese. Kind of fucked up to think of society as fucked up hunger games where if you fuck up the bodies of you and your loved ones are mutilated by this condition but that just seems to be how life works
Really makes you wonder why people don't value themselves. Does society systematically strip the underclass of their self-esteem? Every single job I've had I knew that the purpose was either 1) to make me money 2) to help me develop skills or career experience. Idgaf about my employer making money (except as it relates to my goals); that's his problem to care about. I'm contracted to provide labor, not make his business profitable for him
I figured the stats would be a bit different since the "IT office" I worked at was majority Asian while some other parts of the business and thus overall numbers might be quite a bit different
I'm sure white people do control a lot of jobs or whatever, but I'm still always confused about people talking about white males in tech or techbros etc. when probably 50-75% of my coworkers (F50 tech company) were Asian (note that whites make up 75% of the population and Asians 5% by the 2010-2015 census data i found on wikipedia)
Unfortunately my household had pretty high income but wasn't really available to the children due to my mother being sick and my father being pretty bad with money. But I did get a Pell Grant and a similar state grant once I aged into FAFSA independece, which meant the only thing I had to pay for my second year at our state flagship was food.
It's hilarious how many weird outbursts I've seen from people who probably consider themselves middle class talking about how they barely have any money at all after they pay their rent in Manhattan, send their kids to private school and max out their 401ks, and make payments on their investment properties. It's like alright buddy lol
That's what I did and it was lit. Worked at kmart for a year then pretty much paid my tuition out of savings. Stood way out in all my classes. Got transfer scholarship to my state flagship. If money isn't an issue I guess four years could be better, but it seems pretty good to use CCs.
Hmm, hopefully that stuff doesn't turn out that way for me. I'm going to school to learn how to do research in scientific computing. I want to get apprenticed to do a specific and competitive job, not prove that I'm smart or be an academic glutton or whatever else. I've had a real life job and I don't really care about all that extra stuff, I just want to do applied mathematics for a living. I'm probably one of the top applicants to my program so we will see what happens. I feel like I'll be content to enjoy office politics as well should I fail out and end up in another large corporate job, but that I'll be unable to focus if I don't give a serious shot at academic stuff.
It doesn't seem understood here that for many Facebook is for events, sharing some life updates with friends and family, and messenger, not compulsively scrolling your newsfeed to find articles about Trump's plan or something
The bad part to me about jobs like that was how you were just spending massive hours doing stupid things. A lot of people would enjoy working 10 hours a day in a highly engaging, challenging environment. Instead everyone is so shot from overworking, stress, poor interpersonal relationships, etc. that it sometimes feels like you're working all day on a project nobody needs that doesn't work led by a manager who doesn't know what he's doing and doesn't care to. Basically like you're getting paid to get punched in the face rather than to do a job.
I honestly had managers at the Kmart retail store I worked at who struck me as smarter (and certainly more humble) than at least one software manager I've had
A manager I worked with previously was like that--no interest in making sure the project could be maintained or actually worked, only promising things to people who didn't even use our platform (me and a coworker checked our logs before I left the company) and getting "wins" so he could talk about them in meetings.
Lately I think that this is a social issue. It seems that most normal (non-technical) people are not going to expend so much mental effort in their job that they can't interact with people to a socially acceptable level. For whatever reason, programmers feel comfortable pushing themselves past the point of normal mental effort instead of simply admitting that things are hard and they won't be able to get them done in overly short time-frames.
It's fine to humiliate newcomers as long as you're fine making enemies. As a recent university grad, most people entering CS today are not geeks or nerds or whatever--they're more and more the high IQ people who just want to make money. These people have higher social skills and self-esteem then traditional geeks. The truth is that most programming done today is pretty easy and does not require deep technical skills, so these guys can really advance without problem anyway. Being an asshole means that you're 2-10 years out from people with better social skills than you and hate you advancing into management. At least that's how I read the current trends.
