interestica··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
You’re just overlaying your mental model.

Think of the action as a stored function. Maybe they’ve always recalled the function as part of a certain list. It can be a case where the lists get confused rather than the modality of input (lever etc)

interestica··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
It depends on how that person internalized and learned the behaviour. We store things differently.

This isn’t true. This was a 787. It does not use a separate recorder for voice and data (CVR, FDR).

(Most media outlets also got this wrong and were slow to make corrections. )

Rather, it uses a EAFR (Enhanced airborne flight recorder) which basically combines the functions. They’re also more advanced than older systems and can record for longer. The 787 has two of them - the forward one has its own power supply too.

There should be video as well, but I’m not sure what was recovered. Not necessarily part of the flight data recording, but there are other video systems.

Nah. I get ads in the app and on other browsers. It happened after I was futzing around with dns settings years ago. There’s some combination of whatever I did that keeps chrome ad free. It has persisted through iOS updates as well.

interestica··on No CVR or FDR on 787: Instead, Two EAFRs (Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder) [pdf]
Media coverage, and thus wikipedia info, on this incident is a bit misleading. A lot of reporting assumes a separate CVR and FDR, but that doesn’t apply here. This is one of the first major incidents involving the 787 where that distinction matters. For example: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cjwqjv09q7xo

But, the 787 uses Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorders (EAFRs), which combine both cockpit voice and flight data functions. The functions are combined into a single unit. There are two units per aircraft: one located forward, one aft, providing redundancy. Each unit includes a Recorder Independent Power Supply (RIPS), which is relevant given early speculation about a possible electrical fault.

From a 2012 incident, you can check out what kind of data the EAFRs pull in:

interestica··on Near-infrared spatiotemporal color vision enabled by upconversion contact lenses
I wouldn’t class it as invasive. It’s the difference between glasses and contact lenses: once they’re in, you shouldn’t really realize they’re there.

Although there are many different types of contact lenses (and fit types, and comfort) and many reasons for their use. For some, glasses just aren’t an option.

interestica··on Near-infrared spatiotemporal color vision enabled by upconversion contact lenses
I got fitted for contact lenses. The “fitting” pair were used to measure and adjust. They didn’t have an actual prescription. However, they gave me super-human magnified vision for anything closer than a foot to my face. It was clearer than anything that could be achieved with lenses/magnification outside the eye. It was like having microscopes for eyes.

I seriously just wanted to get a pair for fine vision tasks like soldering. It made me wonder what type of other “vision augmentation” things might be doable with existing tech. There’s probably a market for devices like this even for those with normal/perfect vision.

Nicely articulated. I think their comment encapsulates the disbelief people have about public opinions that differ from their own political viewpoints (and the aspects that had been amplified within their own media/algorithmic bubble).

Bob’s such a great example of forging one’s own path and finding one’s passion.

He failed grade 9. He went to university but dropped out by second year. Traditional learning models just were not for him at the time. But he showed that communicating science was much more about the human element; much more about the communication. He might be more like Canada’s Carl Sagan.

interestica··on Why Vermont farmers are using urine on their crops
Sorry! Those were the two separate options: either high pH or low pH. Adding vinegar is prob easiest and it’s what Rich Tree does.
interestica··on Why Vermont farmers are using urine on their crops
> Unfortunately, poop and urine is one of the main reasons for soil contamination by Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).

That’s not true and that’s absolutely not what those articles say.

Biosolid fertilizer ≠ “poop and urine”

Each article refers to general sewage "sludge" which is the primary output from wastewater treatment plants. That "biosolids" mix is far removed from "poop and urine" and has many other things added to it (eg for treatment) and taken out.

From your [1] > The E.P.A. is currently studying the risks posed by PFAS in sludge fertilizer (which the industry calls biosolids) to determine if new rules are necessary.

> She said regulators should focus on curbing the PFAS entering wastewater by banning use in consumer products or requiring industries to clean their effluent before sending it to treatment plants. “There’s not enough money in the world to take it out at the end,” she said.

To actually use poop and urine effectively, it has to be separated (ahem) "at the source" and processed appropriately before any PFAS can enter. The Rich Tree Institute of the main article are focused entirely on the urine (ahem) "stream" and demonstrating how it could be viable as a fertilizer.

interestica··on Why Vermont farmers are using urine on their crops
There will be a few things you’ll want to do to minimize nitrogen loss. As soon as it’s out, it going to start turning into ammonia and as a gas, it will escape. (The ammonia itself has useful properties, and it’s why urine has been used for all sorts of processes in history(. Making the ‘outputs’ fairly acidic or basic will help keep the nitrogen from leaving in that way. Add vinegar so that the low pH will reduce the bacterial activity that creates the ammonia. Add wood ash to create a very basic environment (high pH) (you should actually get ammonium as a precipitate). Vinegar should also help reduce smells. You might wanna store it for a bit before depositing. (Unless you’re doing the direct deposit method).

interestica··on Ambsheets: Spreadsheets for Exploring Scenarios
This + sports analytics. So much of sports is about slightly different outcomes of related scenarios. There's not much difference between a home run and a flyball caught at the wall. But the data shows something very distinct and ignores the other almost-as-likely outcome. Amb values has the potential to give new ways of analyzing performance and outcomes.

interestica··on Sony ends production of Blu-ray Disc, recordable MiniDisc, and MiniDV media
But your box had a FireWire port? There’s no good way to convert FireWire to current protocols/ports (eg USB).

Old macbook is just a cheap all in one solution with FireWire inputs and software processing g.

interestica··on Sony ends production of Blu-ray Disc, recordable MiniDisc, and MiniDV media
You’re right. But even better than trying to get a compatible PCI card, find an older MacBook Pro that has built in FireWire ports and use something like iMovie to direct rip the DV content. Unfortunately, it has to be done in real-time even though it’s digital data. I haven’t heard anyone use a high speed tape drive for them but it would be theoretically possible.

Also, that setup is a pretty good way to digitize Hi8 analog tapes. And I think you can use some of the camcorders as analog to digital converters of an analog video stream (eg, an attached vcr).

interestica··on Justin Trudeau promises to resign as PM
I was clarifying since the original headline (‘Trudeau resigns’) would be misleading to many and especially to an international audience with different types of leadership (eg a president) - especially since the original source for this was the British broadcaster. While it’s not the norm, he would still have the ability to resign immediately and have someone act in the interim (unless I’m mistaken) until the new leader is selected or force a new election.

(The new link and headline are now accurate and reflect the actual situation.)

interestica··on Justin Trudeau promises to resign as PM
He has not (yet) resigned. He has announced his intention to resign. He will step down when a new leader is selected via the internal Liberal leadership race. Additionally, Parliament is prorogued until March 24 via his request of the Governor-General.
