interactivecode··on The Myth of Self-Documenting Code
Can we just agree that more documentation is better? Well named variables, short functions, inline comments, annotations, examples, context, tutorials, types, friendly code owners. Any and all those things are helpful when dealing with unfamiliar code and apis.

Please please don’t discourage anyone from adding these.

interactivecode··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
Seems more like you knowing it's a sexist joke should be enough reasons not to make it. I sincerely hope you agree that intentional bigotry has no place anywhere.

It's sexist regardless if woman are present. People are victims even if they stand their ground.

interactivecode··on Companies should probably pay $2k per person for open source (2017)
I have no clue what half of these words mean. But why would any type of block chain coin be better than regular subscriptions or licensing?

Note: Im purposely ignoring the pyramid scheme like effects from rising currency values.

interactivecode··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
The same issues apply to American control over European power supplies or Norwegian control over European power supplies.

They aren't anymore dangerous for Europe. The main difference is our existing trade deals with the US are more embedded into the European economy than any of the other countries. We like the US now, they are our friends, but because they are more connected, we are more reliant on them than others, which is dangerous in and of itself.

interactivecode··on Summer 2021 has changed our understanding of extreme weather
I learned a couple years ago that in most climate models clouds aren't included or aren't accurately modeled because they are too complex. https://www.carbonbrief.org/cooling-effect-of-clouds-underes...

Clouds impact weather and climate a lot. like really a lot

interactivecode··on Captcha Patent Is an All-American Nightmare
I feel like having a EFF captcha tool would be perfect. A quality and privacy respecting tool benefitting the web. It will remove the need to rely on tools from FAANG advertisers

interactivecode··on Bypassing macOS TCC user privacy protections by accident and design
As I understand it full disk access means the app can read the disk outside of the usual (strict) app sandbox or explicit user actions like file modals.

This is completely separate from the unix user permissions.

interactivecode··on A Plea for Lean Software (1995) [pdf]
plugins works for things that are plugins. Most people seem to equate separation of concerns with everything should be a plugin. Otherwise you get massive issues actually working across each plugin (or package).

So unless your component is actually used in multiple core products it's not a component, it's just a part of your monolith. Making it a separate component usually, just spreads your monolith across several git repo's

interactivecode··on A New Future for Icanhazip
How is keeping the USA online (which by the way actively destabilizes other countries and seeks out war outside its own soil) any different?
interactivecode··on It's virtually impossible to read old iMessages and they take up tons of storage
Wasn’t it also that they had a great distributed way of doing messages but got sued to changes their implementation?
interactivecode··on It's virtually impossible to read old iMessages and they take up tons of storage
So as a developer you need full disk access to run your programs? Oh my god, the surprise ;-)
interactivecode··on Developer-First
For me a breaking bug in your documentation is the same as a breaking bug in your code. Both won't let me try or use whatever you built.
interactivecode··on Co-founder of Neuralink leaves the company
Ever since I learned that Musk didn't found Tesla [0] or PayPal [1] I get really uncomfortable when reading news like this. It's clearly Musk doing another hostile take over of a company someone else started.

Or with a regular text editor:

interactivecode··on Kinto: Mac-style shortcut keys for Linux and Windows
My biggest annoyance with linux is that for an OS where you supposedly can adjust and modify everything. Changing the keyboard shortcuts (even with kinto) is absolutely impossible. Not all programs work... things like CMD+arrow to move the cursor to end/start of line needs custom scripts. Its a mess.

Surly this could be better?

interactivecode··on How do non-techies edit Jamstack websites?
They could also learn how the website works, or how markdown works. Not everyone needs to be treated like toddlers. Colleagues can be surprisingly capable if you educate them.
interactivecode··on Australia to introduce Google, Facebook legislation to parliament next week
Does anyone have a link to either the actual legislation or a simplified version of it? This article doesn't actually tell us what the legislation will be, just that google and facebook are scared..

interactivecode··on Tokyo public schools will stop forcing students to dye their hair black (2019)
Come on, It’s not a stretch that when being discriminated by school staff also other authorities like the police won’t be on your side.

The authorities response between the black live matter protests and the terrorism from trump supporters is just one recent example of this. As long as the people discriminating have more power than the ones being discriminated, laws only protect some.

interactivecode··on Tokyo public schools will stop forcing students to dye their hair black (2019)
If you think people have “oppressed” needs caused by the rules around them, perhaps you should reassess which aspects of your own life are oppressed.

interactivecode··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Earlier this year I played around with Phoenix for a bit. As a JS dev learning about all this all at once it looks like such a great dev env.

One thing that still felt rough around the edges was the tie in with npm packages. Has that part been improving?
