interactivecode··on Leak: EU Commission to pitch social media restrictions for under-15s
> In particular, the bill bans design features such as infinite scrolling, artificial notifications and certain reward mechanisms.

Honestly I think it's good that there are more guide rails and safeguards implemented for kids.

As with any rules and regulations there will be loop holes and big corporations will still try to get away with as much as they can. But blocking the most harmful mechanisms and content while still keeping access open seems very reasonable.

> tech companies would be required to make their digital services safe by design

Sometimes I think even adults would benefit from rules blocking addictive features and mechanisms.

Revolut does not have a banking license in the US. At the moment they are a front for another bank. Don't be gullible and believe blindly what the marketing departments tell you.
interactivecode··on A California aquifer may have crossed the point of no return
I sometimes wonder what would happen to our other resources if energy was abundant and "free". For example desalination plants running for free could perhaps be used to refill an aquifer.

Of course there are markets and balances in the real world. The idea that energy is always scarce and that we shouldn't produce more than I as an individual need always feels a bit like maintaining scarcity.

often energy storage has a lot of losses in the the conversion. but if you produce 10x of what you need for "free". Would that really matter? I'm sure we will get there at some point.

interactivecode··on Train sim created by just one person is being called the best ever made
At the point where you have 1 million in revenue you for sure have an accountant even just to do your yearly business taxes. So reporting to Epic just becomes an extra hour of work to make the report.
interactivecode··on Why does WhatsApp drain so much phone battery?
The correct way to deliver notifications is through push notifications. On mobile platforms it will wake up the device, wake up the app and handle the notification. No matter if your app is backgrounded, completely quit or open. It's actually really cool and efficient.

It's the low quality code from whatsapp and meta that's causing the battery usage doing all sorts of bad patterns like like constant outbound requests. So many apps like telegram don't have the same issues and are also just as responsive.

interactivecode··on 45°C cooling design cuts data center water use to near zero
As long as the water that goes in, doesn’t come out. The inital water requirement is fine. What is problematic in most cases is the warm water containing pollutants is just pumped straight into our local waste water systems or rivers.
interactivecode··on Ask HN: What is the job market like?
Wondering what happened in April, around that time layoffs started including at my job. No reason at all aside from “AI” and the C suite wanting larger profits.
interactivecode··on Ask HN: What is the job market like?
> The strange thing is this is happening in multiple companies at the same time. It's like all the CEOs and HR reps met at some golf retreat and decided to follow a script.

I’ve gotten the same feeling. It’s too consistent to be a fluke. I get the feeling its a fashion thats being pushed by VC funds who are all neck deep in nvidia, openai and anthropic stocks. They must have realized they can pump this to their portfolio to inflate all the investments.

interactivecode··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
Honestly with Apples high bar of engineers and their massive budgets. If they wanted to they would. So to me it's a good decision from the EU commission to not give into the bullying from Apple. (and others)

I love this in xcode / swift. Where classes and structs have a different colors between local classes and external classes (from a lib).

interactivecode··on The 'untouchable hacker god' behind Finland's biggest crime
Only after informing you, giving you the opportunity to fix things and many many other steps. The harshness is directly related to the size of the company and the companies willingness to fix any issues. They want companies to comply.
interactivecode··on You are not required to close your <p>, <li>, <img>, or <br> tags in HTML
For the same reason css still works if you make a typo and javascript super dynamic: its a friendly interface.

Html, css and js got used so much because you could mess around and still get something to work. While other languages that people use to write “serious” applications just screamed at you for not being smart enough to know how to allocate memory correctly.

Html and css is not a competitor to C. Its more like an alternative to file formats like txt or rtf. Meant to be written by hand in a text editor to get styled pages. So easy and forgiving your mom could do it! (And did, just like everyone else in the myspace days)

interactivecode··on The next chapter of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership
So Microsoft went from 49% to now 27%? Open AI with their non-profit and their for-profit and all these investments and deals they are doing. It feels like they are spending more time doing financial trickery than building AI products.
interactivecode··on AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts
From what I know, the current rules don't say anything about region locking features like apple is doing. The EU regulations might be slow in reaction time but they are not playing around. You can be sure that they will continually close loopholes and avoidance strategies until Apple (and others) aren't a gatekeeper anymore.

The way Apple and others misuse their market position to get away with anything is ridiculous. At a certain size or influence you shouldn't be both a platform for other companies and products and a participant in that platform while giving yourself all sorts of advantages.

Airpods are decent but they have most of their market share due to the massive integration gap from competitors. So shit it's impossible for anyone to compete.

interactivecode··on Tesla said it didn't have key data in a fatal crash, then a hacker found it
that's like worrying about external people having access to the drivers wallet in the case of a fatal crash. Like yeah sure but it's more likely that Tesla is sketchy considering their vested interest is controlling crash data reports
interactivecode··on What services or apps did you see abroad and wonder: why don't we have them?
