Thinking we need to shame our colleagues more is a really bad take. You can like your obscure programming language for all sorts of reasons, but if they go around shaming people I'm not surprised people would rather use a friendlier language.
interactivecode··on Boeing Engineers Set a New Record for Paper Plane Distance
I read that "88.318 meters" as 88 kilometers and was kinda impressed. then I realized they use periods has commas.

interactivecode··on Supreme Court rejects man’s bid to sue police over arrest for Facebook parody
In civilized countries the police should have rules for how to act under certain conditions. For example how to de-escalate and then it’s allowed to drive through a red stoplight. In those countries if a police officer would drive through a red light without reason the should get a fine, suspension or other consequences. And I agree with an earlier commenter, since they should be extremely aware if the rules and boundaries, violations should be punished stricter.

though you have to admit in basically all situations the employer has more leverage than a single employee.
interactivecode··on Mandatory DEI statements are becoming the norm in academic hiring
I did not get the liberty to decline participating.

I am not religious so why should I pledge an oath to be ruled under a god.

I am forced to recite a daily mantra filled with propaganda for a republic which is more concerned about arguing for liberty and justice than it is actually providing liberty and justice.

interactivecode··on The technology behind GitHub’s new code search
I would love to see how to do something like this. Are you open to sharing your implementation?
interactivecode··on Announcing Masonry 0.1, and my vision for Rust UI
Of course I've seen it. have you ever seen the `Syntax Error: expected SEMICOLON` error message while trying to do something completely unrelated?
interactivecode··on Mandatory DEI statements are becoming the norm in academic hiring
Reminds me of having to stand in a circle with all my classmates while one of us had the privilege of holding the national flag. We then in unison had to recite a pledge to that flag, the nation and god. just thinking about having to say the pledge of allegiance gives me chills.

With swiftui previews you can press the + plus icon in the top right and get the drag and drop component builder[0]. On the right side bar you also get a bunch of ui builder options that will generate code for you. [1]

interactivecode··on Announcing Masonry 0.1, and my vision for Rust UI
how do things on the web fail for no reason? My experience is the exact opposite. The web's html is very lenient and if you html makes somewhat sense it will render your document.

If you're comparing legacy web code to new and modern rust crates of course it's not a fair comparison. just wait until the until the second wave of rust gui libs, it will be a similar pain of legacy code when the web industry went from Angular v1 to React. Legacy projects, outdated packages and brittle build processes, now with rust there will also be the added "benefit" of a more complicated programming language.

interactivecode··on Don’t teach during code reviews
100% agree, code review should be there to check if the code doesn’t contain any obvious security risks or mistakes.

Designing features, architecture and learning should happen before someone even gets to the point of submitting a PR. Plus if it can be improved on in follow PRs then do that instead of blocking juniors with pedantics

interactivecode··on The Pretty Good House
Better than the dew and ice of the inside like with single pane windows!
interactivecode··on The Pretty Good House
I dunno the single pane windows on my 100 year old house also have seals around them that let water through. They really need to be fixed or replaced.

1500 is not much if you compare it with any tech device upgrade cycle.

interactivecode··on Up to the 1990s, raw salmon sushi was not eaten in Japan
My favorite salmon fact is that salmon was really common in the West European rivers. They aren't there anymore due to damming, watermills and other industrialization slowing down the rivers causing them to contain more mud and sand rather than rocks.

https://historiek.net/komt-watermolen-deed-nederlandse-zalm-...

I've heard from multiple sources that even some old professions had rules about how often they can be force to eat salmon. For example this source talks about how messengers are protected and are only allowed to eat salmon 2-3 times a week. I've seen similar rules in an old dutch servants cook book.

interactivecode··on Ask HN: Would a tech recession vindicate calls for tech unionization?
I feel like a union would do really well in situations like the layoffs at twitter.
interactivecode··on Distributor cancelled an order and we need to move 30k bags of coffee [updated]
indeed. They should realize how ridiculous the whole net 30 days is .
interactivecode··on Distributor cancelled an order and we need to move 30k bags of coffee [updated]
quite a significant difference for the complete population of Europe where basically no everyday purchases are made by credit card
interactivecode··on Distributor cancelled an order and we need to move 30k bags of coffee [updated]
I would love it if the EU or government would enforce equal payment terms for whole company. Lets say a shop wants to have a net 30 terms with their suppliers, then they should also offer net 30 terms for their customers.

This would equalize power dynamics. The large corp shouldn’t be allowed to demand immediate payment on one side and then just significantly delay payments on the other side.

interactivecode··on Women like working with people, men like working with things, all over the world
For jobs like nurses, the “people” they work with are not people they are things. The people they actually work with are their colleagues.
