interactivecode··on Google Has Officially Killed Cache Links
Part of the ideas behind the EU’s “very large online platform” rules. Basically saying that if your platform gets big enough where its basically important infrastructure, that then comes with responsibilities.

I would welcome some rules and regulations about this kinds of stuff. Can you imagine that google wakes up one day and decides to kill gmail? It would cause so many problems. It’s already impossible that even as a paid gmail user you can’t get proper support in case something goes awry. Sure you can argue they can decide what ever they want with their business. But if you have this many users, I do think at some point that comes with some obligations of support, quality and continued service.

interactivecode··on Making progress on side projects with content-driven development
My advice for side projects, ship something the same day. Avoid leaving it in a broken state everytime you work on it.

This both helps keep the feature creep and complexity down, and makes sure you always have a running demo to show or play with.

Side projects should be all fun, if they are not, its not a side project its a second job.

interactivecode··on The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Can Be Cleaned for $7.5B
Why would contaminating the environment of a major food supply be the least harmful place? how is that better than purpose built infrastructure to contain that trash?

They do also work on intercepting from rivers [0], but what do you propose? We should just leave all that garbage in the ocean and just try not to look at it?

interactivecode··on Mother's gut microbiome during pregnancy shapes baby's brain development
We need to know way more about our gut and bowel microbes. it's wild how little we actually understand outside of good gut health is good. It will take a lot of big and small research to slowly get reliable science and results.
interactivecode··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
The models are trained on something. By definition you can’t separate the output from the input.
interactivecode··on "We ran out of columns"
sure it might be a mess, but at least it's purpose built. I love that kind of performance gains. Honestly most companies die before purpose built code like that becomes a problem.
interactivecode··on EU warns X it may face fines for 'deceptive' blue-tick system
Why are consumer protections abuse? Do you also think organizations like the FDA are abuse?
interactivecode··on Zed on Linux Is Here
yes, jetbrains editors are particually good at resolving merge conflicts. They also have a magic button to do all the obvious conflicts automatically.
interactivecode··on Show HN: Simulating 20M Particles in JavaScript
The "hard" way is often the simple way with these sort of things. What makes it easier is while building out your code, you make little pieces of UI to visualize what you're doing. Think of them like unit tests or test driven development. Then you can take those, clean them up a little and publish them.
interactivecode··on People are feeling stuck in their jobs
If you like technology you could always slowly transition into teaching technology. Highschool programming courses, student robotics teams, etc might be fun?

Where Im from those programs and activity are usually ran by multiple teachers and need a lot more than hard science knowledge to run well. For you they could provide a on ramp into more and more tech without losing too much of what you have know

interactivecode··on Code reviews do find bugs
I review a lot of code with the mindset of yes and…

Basically when I start the PR is approved in my head until I find something blocking. I.e. major problem that causes dataloss, big performance issue or breaks other code. Anything else is a minor comment at most. The PR is approved by default. This gives the dev responsibility and ownership. Plus it increases release cadence

Doing a follow up PR to improve or fix something is just as fast as blocking the MR, but blocking the MR can be bad for morale.

This strategy might work better in young startups where having the feature _exist_ is better than not shipping. in my experience this builds up responsibility and ownership and removes the whole policing of other peoples work vibe around code review.

Also decisions and discussion around formatting, when to test, design, features, functionality, architecture should not happen during code review, they should have happened way before coding, or collaboratively while working. Code review is the worst time for that stuff, imho it should be to sanity check implementation.

interactivecode··on Writing HTML by hand is easier than debugging your static site generator
Thats an expensive way to say github pages
interactivecode··on The Migrants Spending $72,000 to Illegally Immigrate to the US
I always found it odd how restricted immigration is in the US, considering it's a country recently founded by immigrants.
interactivecode··on EU Council has withdrawn the vote on Chat Control
What really gets me with these types of "safety" proposals is that we already have quite some ways to get someone's private information and communication if they are being investigated. Has everyone forgotten that? All that these wide reaching laws do is to allow for governments to investigate without substantiated reasons.
interactivecode··on European content removal laws are scrubbing the internet of legal content
Why are you so worried about freedom of speech when you haven’t even separated state and religion?

Also, Freedom of speech doesn’t mean acceptance of hate. Im glad that content and people who encourage racism are removed.

interactivecode··on European content removal laws are scrubbing the internet of legal content
If you live in a country that doesn’t protect you. It’s not a country, it’s just a government sized HOA.
interactivecode··on App designed by Indigenous people in W. Australia preserves language, culture
Considering how much of "science" has been used to devalue anyone non-western, the distinction is not odd, it's actually really important. Don't forget that anyone who does science has their own personal lens they use to look at results or steer future research areas or even blatantly skew outcomes of research.

Life is objectively worse for people under colonial rule.

Are you saying the incas should thank the Spanish for boosting their immune system?

Should native Americans be happy their children got sterilized?

interactivecode··on Leaked OpenAI documents reveal aggressive tactics toward former employees
If its not negotiated on exit why are they requesting additional documents to be signed when leaving? Clearly nothing like this was agreed at the start of employment.
interactivecode··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Do you feel it’s possible to get information that isn’t filtered or influenced by the US government?

Aka how confident are you that the information you are getting today is honest, accurate and not influenced in any way? That you get the full picture, the good and the bad?

While I do feel like my personal views are more aligned with the US / west. I’m not convinced im getting balanced information. Its a little naive to suggest that only our enemies are doing propaganda.

interactivecode··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Well in the US the gov doesnt do it themselves directly but instead pays russians to do it for them. I guess the chineese werent willing?
interactivecode··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Lol, queue china writing a clear document on all the US stock their citizens and companies own. Just to mess with the USA.

Anything they sell just gives them more money to buy more ownership.

interactivecode··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
The US social media seems to be encouraging nationalism and conservatism. Which Im also not to happy about. It seems to be creating more unrest in the west rather than strength progress and unity.

China might not even need to influence the west through tiktok, meta and friends seem to be doing plenty of it themselves. None of it seem to be making us progress forward tbh

interactivecode··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
The cybertruck was their latest in "big promises and falling short in delivering". the price cuts clearly don't make up for it and Elon is losing more and more interest.
interactivecode··on The hero tax: Why 'selfless' workers are professionally exploited
Staffing enough people for regular 8 hour work days with regular breaks should be the norm. At the lowest bar, any mistakes that happen on shifts longer than that should be held accountable to any management of the hospital or government agencies making policy, not the nurses and doctors. These are preventable situations, so the people creating the situation in which this occurs should be liable.
interactivecode··on Canoes discovered northwest of Rome are oldest boats ever found in Mediterranean
Now that would be a good use of high quality translation tech: make research available and searchable across languages.
interactivecode··on Ask HN: I want to create IMDB for open source projects
I like the idea, but I think looking at imdb from a movie viewer perspective is not really doing it justice. imdb is first and foremost an industry directory. This creates the value for everyone to fill their profiles and use it as the source of truth. “Finding cool movies to watch” in that sense is secondary.

The idea of a imdb for open source is really cool, cracking the code to get industry buy in will in my opinion be the way to ensure a long tail of value for anyone using it.

interactivecode··on Apple cuts 600 jobs after dropping self-driving car plans
yes social safety nets would be the usual way the impact/consequences are taken care of. At the same time america could also lean into the idea of the employer providing everything, in that case it would make sense for the employer to also take care of the consequences.
interactivecode··on Apple cuts 600 jobs after dropping self-driving car plans
what was the saying again? the beatings will continue until morale improves?

Is the threat of financial ruin or the threat of starving worth the advantage that you yourself are getting?

Inside the current "free market" do you really have the agency, choice or leverage to choose a different economic relationship with your employer if you would want one?
