insickness··on A TV Show Forced Britain's Devastating Post Office Scandal into the Light
The show is well-made and worth watching. I enjoyed it.
insickness··on A TV Show Forced Britain's Devastating Post Office Scandal into the Light
Also that the post office outright lied about having remote access to users' systems and the ability to change numbers.
insickness··on Asking people to "do the research" on fake news makes it more believable
Nope. Just one side is problematic. The other has a monopoly on wisdom and justice. Go team!
insickness··on Asking people to "do the research" on fake news makes it more believable
So much "news" today is opinion masquerading as fact. While news media companies often do get the facts wrong, even when the facts are right, those facts are heavily colored by commentary and slant, often leaving out other facts that don't adhere to the narrative. I'm highly skeptical when the author's conclusion is that readers can't discern fake news on their own, when even educated people disagree on what is fake news, when the author thinks that people doing their own research is a problem, and virtue lies in believing the common narrative.
insickness··on iPhone that fell from hole in Alaska 737 MAX flight is found, still open to Mail
There are an almost limitless myriad of "Most people don't expect..." which is why security features are important.
insickness··on Evidence that we have been living in an increasingly risk-averse culture
I suspect the risk aversion has to do with social anxiety that accompanies the tendencies to exist more and more in virtual worlds. Instead of physically going out to interact with people, you can do it online. Instead of going on a physical adventure, you can play a video game or watch a movie. All of these carry almost zero physical risk, but more so, as we move away from the physical into the virtual, the mental muscles that power social confidence deteriorate due to lack of use, giving rise to social aversion and loss of social skills.
insickness··on Age verification is incompatible with the internet
This is a straw man. Saying that the burden is on parents to ensure a child's safety doesn't mean a child molester is free from blame. You've taken his point and pushed it to the extreme.

TL;DR: Give yourself room to write about boring stuff, as long as it's honest.

insickness··on Harvard President Claudine Gay resigns
I don't support censoring anything students say, no matter how objectionable. Someone will always find something objectionable.
insickness··on Harvard President Claudine Gay resigns
Is that true, though? I know colleges bar speakers that espouse disagreeable views but do they prevent students from espousing disagreeable opinions?
insickness··on We Could Fix Everything, We Just Don't
The true conditions of poverty in North Korea are shrouded in secrecy, with reports of famine, starvation, and human rights violations. The extent of homelessness is unknown, but defectors' stories don't paint a good picture. Homelessness affects children ("Kotjebi") and elderly individuals, often abandoned due to an inability to support them. The government denies their existence, and homeless individuals are rounded up, their destination unknown.

insickness··on We Could Fix Everything, We Just Don't
Citing a totalitarian government as the solution to homelessness supports the original commenter's claim rather than detracts from it.

I wonder if these adult sites could host a ton of non-adult content in order to get below the 30% mark. There used to be a similar law in (I think it was) NYC stores. To combat this, adult bookstores would stock tons of non-porn titles which weren't even really for sale.
insickness··on If you don't genuinely love tech, don't work in tech
I would guarantee that most of the people who come to Hacker News haven't ever posted an amazing hack here. It doesn't mean we can't appreciate one.

insickness··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
You don't even need a seed box. You can use a debrid service, like realdebrid or alldebrid to upload the magnet, then download from their site. Costs about $3 per month and you won't get a nastygram from your cable company.
insickness··on [dead]
The same has been said of New York City, and is true to some extent. If you don't have a lot of money, it's not a very comfortable place to live.
insickness··on Google Searches can, and will, be held against you
It's not outside the realm of possibility that someone else, such as a family member, used his computer or it was compromised.
insickness··on Why liberalism and leftism are increasingly at odds
I feel like the central tenet of wokeism, or at least its defining attribute separating it from liberalism, is a belief that differences between groups are 100% attributable to oppression.

I used to be extremely liberal for years. Then one day I got into an argument with a friend who believed that men and women are 100% mentally identical, insisting that all differences between men and women, including sexual attraction, was 100% social construct and 0% biological. In other words, the reason the majority of men were attracted to women and vice-versa was a social construct. The lie that all differences between groups is social construct is a necessary foundation to attribute oppression as the cause of any and all differences in success between groups.

insickness··on Unattractive funds managers outperform funds with attractive managers by over 2%
That sword cuts both ways. A business that manages all aspects of its business properly, including web presence, outreach and customer service, may signify of a higher quality of work.
insickness··on The Religion of Techno-Optimism
> For Andreessen... you’re either a techno-optimist who won’t question the faith, or you’re one of their enemies: the Communist boogeymen,

After complaining about this extremist point of view, the author goes on to compare tech optimism with fascism. Equally droll.

insickness··on The pro-Israel information war
> Most Israelis don't want that

Because it would mean the end of a Jewish state. Combine Israel and Palestine and you get roughly 50% Jews, 50% Arabs. (5.3M Arabs in Palestine, 7.1M Jews in Israel and 2M Arabs in Israel).

insickness··on What's lost when we photograph life instead of experiencing it? (2016)
I think this is a symptom of existing too much in the virtual world rather than the physical world. When we spend so much time in that world consuming content, there's a natural tendency to want to be part of it, to want to contribute to that world. The easiest way to create content is to take photographs.
insickness··on No new boss at NSA until it answers questions on buying location, browsing data
Right, I'm not saying that they don't break the law. They do. But technically, their role is not to break the law. There ostensibly is oversight but it obviously doesn't work well enough.
insickness··on No new boss at NSA until it answers questions on buying location, browsing data
It won't. There are already laws in place, like the California Consumer Privacy Act, which governs how user data is handled.
insickness··on No new boss at NSA until it answers questions on buying location, browsing data
That's not true at all. Intelligence agencies can't just do whatever they want. They are beholden to the people just like every other government agency. They can be granted power to do things that ordinary people can't, but that doesn't mean they are above the law.
