insaneirish··on 56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience
> but 56k was fine over regular lines.

Sort of. The quality/length of your local loop made a difference.

And heck, 56k being able to do 56k in the first place was dependent on not having a "regular" line between the ISP and their central office (CO), but rather it being digital, whereas the line from the user to their CO was always analog. Removing a set of digital to analog and analog to digital conversions in the ISP -> user path was what allowed the download speed to reach 56k. Upload was limited to 33.6k because it included an additional set of conversions and introduced more errors, prohibiting the higher speed.

This shows getting up to 56k over normal phone lines was indeed tricky.

> It's is heartening looking at a country like India and thinking that it only seems to be a little behind China on the same trajectory.

Depends on what you mean by "a little behind". Reading Patrick McGee's "Apple in China" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_in_China) made me think otherwise.

> Oh I back them up to Immich self-hosted. I just stopped paying Apple.

Which means this original comment is somewhat disingenuous: "256Gigs of storage basically means everyone's going to have to upgrade their iCloud storage monthly spend just to back this thing up."

Clearly there is another option (as evidenced by your own behavior). But let's not pretend that option is free, either.

> I've stopped sending my camera roll to iCloud just to save on space.

This is an interesting choice. Photos from my phone would literally be the last thing I ever turned off backup for.

To each their own...

insaneirish··on Tracking Costco gas prices
I understand your argument on gas. But I find the comment about tires to be curious. I literally will not buy tires anywhere else.

Costco:

- Often has a lower price on tires than other stores (particularly when they run a brand specific sale)

- Includes free installation

- Properly torques lug nuts/bolts

- Includes road hazard warranty

- Properly patches tires when you do have a service issue

Those are the highlights...

insaneirish··on Thomann takes legal action against Fender
In one fell swoop, Fender destroyed every bit of musician goodwill they had. For right or for wrong (and I think for wrong), their claims are baseless.

I wish them (and their PE overlords) a powerful defeat, ideally in a court of law, but if not, in the court of public opinion.

insaneirish··on HP re-releases classic computer science calculator: The HP-16C
I never thought the HP of today would do this. 20+ years ago, I was first enamored by a 16C a much older coworker owned. Sometime after that, I bought one on eBay for around $100 (IIRC). Inflation adjusted, this reissue is a deal!
insaneirish··on HP re-releases classic computer science calculator: The HP-16C
It's simply not for you then. That's okay.

I'm the opposite. I can't use a non-RPN calculator. Getting the numbers out of my head and onto the stack is how I achieve clarity in what I'm doing.

I used the 49 in high school until I wore out the substandard keyboard. Then I did what I should have in the first place and bought a 48GX which I still have 20+ years later.

insaneirish··on Can you stop beans from making you gassy?
Steve Sando, the founder/owner of Rancho Gordo, has been on the podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cooking-issues-with-da...) hosted by the author of this article (Dave Arnold) a few times.

Those episodes are really fun and always result in me eating more beans!

insaneirish··on Can you stop beans from making you gassy?
If you are unfamiliar with the author, Dave Arnold is a former instructor at the French Culinary Institute, a bar owner/operator in NYC (Booker & Dax (closed), Existing Conditions (closed), and Bar Contra (https://www.barcontra.com)), a cooking equipment designer and manufacturer (https://www.bookeranddax.com), sharer of lots of knowledge (e.g. https://cookingissues.com/primers/sous-vide/part-i-introduct...), James Beard Award winning book author (https://www.kitchenartsandletters.com/products/liquid-intell...), and a weekly podcast host (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cooking-issues-with-da...).

I highly recommend anything he works on.

insaneirish··on Comparing the power consumption of a 30 year old refrigerator to a new one
My delivered cost of electricity went up about 50% per kWh in the last few months and is therefore 3x what you mention and likely only going higher.

[AI driven] data center power consumption is real and as of right now, it seems like other consumers are subsidizing it.

insaneirish··on Using Sun Ray thin clients in 2025
Sun Rays were so good. Being able to walk over to someone else's desk and say "hey, take a look at this" and swap your card for theirs and instantly have your desktop was such a great user experience.

Also enjoyed the keyboards (with control where caps lock "normally" is)...

insaneirish··on Comma 3X: Initial Impressions
Maybe it's me, but I think in the worse case scenario (criminal liability), a jury will be more sympathetic to a person (acting in good faith) that had an issue because of the car manufacturer's provided system than they would to a person who installed a DIY/open source self-driving system.

And I say this as someone who considered trying out the project.

insaneirish··on Windows Kills SMB Speeds When Using Tailscale
I feel like this whole thing buries the lede a bit.

Yes, turns out running overlay/VPN type things disrupts traffic patterns. This is a non-story.

But we're talking about using wireguard on a local network, so the actual interesting question is: why does it cause the performance to plummet? Is it an implementation issue or something more fundamental?

I expect some performance impact. I don't expect a three orders of magnitude impact (which is what 355 KB/s imputes).

insaneirish··on Spirit Airlines is filing for bankruptcy
It's interesting how major airlines competing with them has made things worse for everyone. I have many times seen passengers ignorant about what "basic economy" means (or at least feigning ignorance) and it leads to passengers trying to negotiate seat swapping on their own, or gate agents getting involved when it's a young child getting separated. All of it leads to boarding delays, which leads to delays pushing back, which leads to sequencing delays for takeoff.
insaneirish··on Cooking with black plastic is particularly crucial to avoid
I have wood spoons that go in the dishwasher multiple times per week for years and they're fine.

It's why I like wood. You don't need to baby it, and if it breaks down, you throw it out and it returns to the earth.

> but I also hate the hesitation on uncontrolled left-hand turns in particular. Seems dangerous.

Bingo. This is exactly where it scares me, particularly when I'm already in an intersection.

> I've pretty much just made it a reflex to hit the turn-off button when I turn on the car. At least it's easy once a reflex.

My daily driver is old enough not to have auto stop/start. My problem is my wife's vehicle has it. She instinctively turns it off as soon as she's in the vehicle. Because I only drive her vehicle sporadically, I don't have the muscle memory to do that, so it inevitably catches me by surprise.

Sad that this is what it's come to, but here we are.

I was considering purchasing a Honda recently, and this was one of the things I investigated. Like you, I consider the hesitation imposed by this mechanism to be annoying, and in addition, dangerous.

insaneirish··on AirTags key to discovery of Houston's plastic recycling deception
There is already an argument that says "let's stop pulling stuff out of the ground purely to burn" and instead use renewable resources. That's a difficult enough argument that lots don't agree with.

Saying "let's burn the plastic" without a plan to stop creating single use plastic creates a backdoor reason and economy to keep using plastic for everything.

insaneirish··on AirTags key to discovery of Houston's plastic recycling deception
> Because in the real world burning plastic for energy reduces CO2 emissions.

Compared to what? Over what period? Consider this at the extremes. Instead of investing in any photovoltaic, 100% of PV demand should be shifted to burning landfilled plastics. Would you argue that makes sense?

insaneirish··on AirTags key to discovery of Houston's plastic recycling deception
> That should say "reducing carbon emissions", not adding. Burning plastic for energy is a net reduction in CO2 emission.

Not sure I understand that math. You have plastic. You burn it. That is a net increase in atmospheric CO2.

The other option is you bury it, which sounds horrible, but at least doesn't increase atmospheric CO2.

The problem is you're going to say that instead of burning the plastic, we burn something else. But maybe we don't do that, either?
